Going by Chris-Chan and other notables the autismo appeal was born from the comics and cartoon of the 90s, which unlike Mario had drama, relationship bullshit, edgelord characters, ridiculous lore, you name it. With the rise of the internet came a massive boom of fan work, in particular fanfiction, roleplaying and of course porn. My personal theory is this was caused by the draught in mainline Sonic games between 1994 and 1999, a draught which Mario never had. Left with little else to do people started to indulge themselves in all manner of shit to carry on their fandom.

That's just what got it started of course, how it persists to this day is the true mystery.

Being a heavily stylized anthropomorphic character starts things kind of pointed in a terrible direction, and then the later 3D games with human characters and introducing the idea of there being some kind of romantic interest between any of the characters pretty much fired it from a cannon in that direction

SMW is easy but not as easy as sonic, no. And that complaint is more because of sonic's reputation as a speed game, which is isn't. It's still pretty hard to die if you're trying to go fast though.

thats the point about sonic. having the motor skills and enough practice to beat the stages as fast as possible.

Mario does have echoes of pop culture, it's just more elaborate and old fashioned. Mario World, for example, obviously has influences from old animation and fantasy, and some of the music is quite raggy and jazz like.

I prefer Sonic because it had more personality, the levels felt more varied and the character designs were far more appealing. Also much better music.

I like Sonic better. Here is why.

1. The Sonic games have better visuals and much MUCH more interesting worlds to look at.
2. Music is also way better. I seriously doubt even many Mario fans would disagree with this.
3. Sonic is easier to pick up and play than Mario. Perhaps it makes it more casual due to the rings and one button gameplay but it suits Sonic so well. Yeah Sonic games are also easier than Mario games, whatever.
4. Classic Sonic characters are a lot more likeable.
5. The storylines are more likeable. Even more righteous since Mario is always trying to save Peach or her mushroom kingdom while Sonic is in it to save the animals. The robot enemies are also saved if Sonic defeats them.
6. Sonic gameplay is faster, especially if you know the levels inside out.

Mario is great though. Consistently Mario has been way better than Sonic. But classic Sonic is beloved by many for a reason and I think I posted the reasons why. Sonic 3 combined with Sonic and Knuckles are the best platformer of the 16 bit era.

I just like Sonic better.

I've got nothing against Mario per se, but I prefer the fast paced, physics based platforming of Sonic than Mario's brand of platforming.

I just love booting up one of the classic Sonic games and just ripping through levels at the "speed of sound". There's so many variables when it comes to the physics that it feels so satisfying to master it in your advantage.
Ever curl into a ball at the beginning of large slope and just have that satisfying feeling as you smoothly slide down and out, exiting the slope at top speed and maintaining that momentum as you breeze through the level, reacting to every obstacle that the game places in your way?

My love for the classic Sonic games are hard to truly describe, but that's one of the reasons. They also have great sound tracks, look graphically pretty good (and far more visually interesting than any Mario game) and overall are just charismatic games.

Mario is piss easy though, that's my problem with it.
The original is kind of hard, but i'm sure if I played that as much as i've played Sonic, i'd have an easy time with it.

Everything else though? Laughably simple and easy to beat, the games were intended for four year olds, they're not gonna be hard. Even as a kid, I played and beat SMB3 in a single day, it took me multiple restarts to beat Sonic 1, and I didn't beat Sonic 2 until I was a full grown adult (Mainly because of Metropolis Zone, and then later because of the final boss).

I feel like those saying Sonic is "easy" haven't even beaten any of the classic games.

Start off with Sonic 2, chronology isn't important, they're not exactly story heavy games, and Sonic 1 pace breaking levels would probably turn you off.
