>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)

Anyone know why the image that appears on my CRT appears to shift position, and sometimes gets partly cut off, depending on what source I feed it?
eg. SNES via RGB is slightly off center but mostly fills the screen, while GameCube via YPbPr gets cut off on one side and leaves a fairly wide black bar on the other.

Different consoles use different sync timings and start drawing to the raster at different times than others, sometimes differing even between games (this is more a case of using a lower resolution rather than sync timing however).

Thanks for the explanation.
I was debating fiddling with the settings to try and fix the issue, but my CRT is a BVM I got as an ex-service unit from a TV station- which was presumably calibrated by a professional; and I don't know what I'm doing, so it'd probably be like trying to fix a smudge on a wedding cake with a shovel.

I have a handful of other systems lying around but the Playstation is the only one that interests me. To be fair, the only games I have on the other systems are games I've owned for 20 years now, whereas with the Playstation I'm downloading and burning games as I play through them. I'm not in to retro gaming purely for nostalgia, most of the fun comes from playing games I never played when they were new.
I guess I play old pc games on a crt about as often as I play Playstation games.

Same, that's why I've been exploring the Genesis library a lot lately. I could've got an SD2SNES instead of a Mega Everdrive but I've played SNES my whole life. I've discovered so many amazing games for the Genesis, like the Shinobi and Thunderforce series and Elemental Master.

Same here. I had a Genesis as a kid and I still have my original system, but there are a ton of games I never played or even heard of back then. That's my favorite part about all the old consoles. That feeling of only having a relatively small number of games as a kid and now being able to go out and buy a ton of them for dirt cheap (well, less so now than a couple years ago, but you get my point)

Gonna finally buy one of those chink mega everdrive clones for 25 dollarydoos. I've been meaning to buy one for a while now but never got around to it. I have a few genesis shmups like Thunderforce 3+4, Phelios, Granada, and Hellfire, but there are a TON I've never played because they're all so expensive.

You don't want the first one; It's an HD model and scales everything to 1080i.
The 1953 would be a nice set, but for something so badly damaged, I'd definitely want a decent chunk off of that asking.
From the broad craigslist link, that KV-32S42 would be a nice set if you don't mind dealing with something so large. The S-Video input on it would be nice. Would try to talk them down a bit first though. The 27'' black Sony could also be decent, but you'd have to message them to work out what it might have input wise. >>5122084 would also be a nice set, but do keep in mind they're both going to be quite heavy; the S42 is ~140lb, and the FS100 is ~165.

>>5122043
Entirely so, yes. Any proper dedicated transcoder will be; The only time you'd run into a problem is if you ended up with something that scales/processes the image. For the Key Digital, input = output, and the only option you get on it is the sync output type.

RCUT seems to be the main dictator of how much red in the image, but its acting quite strangely. Any value from 130 down to 50 doesnt seem to cause any change in the amount of red on screen. Then I go from 50 to 40 and it cuts out completely, like a binary on/off. But its also delayed, like ill go down to 40 and then it takes like 20 or so seconds for the red to slowly fade into nothing

As for a color purity issue, is that something that can be fixed without too much pain and suffering? If not, its okay. I'm okay with the screen color being off if nothing can be done; it's just that i'd like to get it right if that's achievable. If not, salmon colired enemies are acceptable

Thanks. $1 at a local thrift shop. No drivers for it for windows 7 however, so all the cool buttons either do the wrong thing, or just don't work at all. I had a black one back in the day, but I left it in my car one hot summer day during a move, and it absorb all the sun's energy and warped to the shape of a letter "L". It will be missed. I just recently upgraded out of a beige PC case, so it may be time to think about a USB keyboard. I hear they are the future. I do enjoy typing 140+wpm because it sounds like a popcorn machine.

Shits fuk'd m8; Alternatively, risk attempting to buff out and polish it. If there's a spray anti-glare coat, have fun removing it from the entire face

>plastic
Grip & Rip. Essentially get at the tube face, at the areas behind the bezel, and remove the sheet of plastic which will hopefully be the only part scratched. Enjoy reassembly, and enjoy scratch free but now unprotected and more prone to glare screen.

Sorry for asking a question without posting pics, I do realize that's retarded, but I got 2 crts from Goodwill recently. They looked perfectly fine when plugged in at the store, but when I took it home, I noticed when they were plugged in if you look really close at the screen when its plugged in(not just game systems but the entire tv itself without any external plugs) it looks a bit like shaky or wavy I guess you could say. I tried putting it in a different room, even a different house but I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried looking up wavy or shaky lines but they seem to be more serious problems where the picture is going off screen. Mine is barely noticeable on the small crt from faraway, but on the 32 inch crt I can notice it alot and its really annoying. Any idea what this is? I keep thinking its Interference but my old CRT in my one room(yes i tried plugging the new ones in there, no effect) works completely fine with no wavy/shaky lines. Any idea what this is or how to fix it?

Never gonna happen. It's an entirely different ecosystem of parts that have not been in production for decade(s). You'd need to have multiple factories starting up to build niche components specifically for CRTs. It's dead, Jim.

Best to just enjoy them why they still exist, in whatever capacity is available to you. And when eventually all the phosphors burn out, just switch over to an upscaler or line doubler.

You can find a garbage TV like that in any thrift store. I've tried those Toshiba models. They all have a built in artificial edge enhancement that you can't turn off even in the Service mode. You can turn down the brightness all you want, and you will still have horrible ringing visuals.

Pick up a JVC, Sony, Panasonic or even a Philip Magnavox. Don't be stupid and drive 4 hours for a piece of shit like that.

The ONLY reason you should ever be driving 4 hours for an aging TV is in the scenario of some kind of pro monitor with very little hours.

PS2 plays best with something that can handle 480i well, given how little of it's library can do 480p and how poorly the games that support it are implemented.

HUEG can go almost entirely 480p or better, so it can fare better on LCDs or if you feel like jumping through the hoops, a PC CRT.

Don't have either console. Have done Wii U, Switch, and PS3 to it, all work fine.

Yes it can do 1080i, 720p, and 1080p. 1080i or 720p would be my suggestion of the three, 1080p is only decent for video and the like on it.

Yes you could hook up a PC with a chunky GPU to it; 720p @ 110hz would be doable; 800x600@120 would be the highest standard resolution with the highest refresh it could take, though if you go non-standard, something ~660p120 would be right at the edge of doable.

PS2 looks really good and plays buttery smooth on a CRT. If you haven't played ps2 games recently you should prepare yourself for some super slowdown in frames or just overall ugliness which might make you not even want to play. Two games come to mind immediately. Vice City see's terrible frame drops when helicopters, tree movement, and cops get involved. MGS3 legitimately looks like dog shit and will hurt your eyes to play and try and figure out whats a piece of wood and whats a gator.

Xbox games, eh. I'm on the fence about. They look totally fine and I can't complain about them on a CRT. In general I love using my CRT for most 6th gen stuff. However, if you are going to be playing splitscreen on your xbox I would suggest an LCD or something. CRT's even a 36 inch just aren't great for splitscreen. Then again I just want as much screen real estate as I can get when playing on a CRT because they just aren't that big.

A little insight into what my CRT experience is; I've owned PVM's from 9 inches to 20, 20 inch BVM's, Sony and Non, 36 inch consumer tv's(currently use). Professional monitors look great and all but getting one over 20 inches is hard as fuck and for me 20 just didn't cut it since I like sitting further than 6 feet away from my tv sometimes. Getting a large PC CRT would be next on my list, if I ever get a 40 inch CRT my hunt for tv's will end.

How do you guys feel about scanlines on a PS2? Are they 100% needed?

Xbox and Wii/Gamecube have tons of 480p support, so it makes sense using them through component on a HD CRT for great image quality. What about the PS2? The list of 480p games is so small.

Sup niggers. I recently got my original childhood genesis working again after a long time by replacing all the caps and touching up all the solder joints. So now I have two consoles, so I decided to buy a second RGB SCART cable.

I already have a good-quality one from the UK site and it's worked fine. For the "backup cable" I just bought a cheap one off ebay. On my CRT I don't usually notice too much of a drop in quality comparing the "good cables" to the cheap ebay ones, but with this one the difference was very stark. Getting the signature jailbar patterns of Genesis composite, which leads me to believe the cables are sync-on-composite rather than cysnc (why people who wire cables like this when the genesis can output straight sync, I have no idea)

So anyway, I want to try fixing the issue by opening it up and switching the sync cable from composite to the cysync line on the 8-pin DIN connector. Only issue is I cannot for the life of me figure out how to open up the connector without just trying to slice it apart and hope for the best. Is there some sort of trick to these guys? It's not like the Nintendo AV connector where it's clearly two pieces that you can pry apart

Because :
composite as sync is the scart standard (I actually had a Sony TV that had a blue tint if I used pure sync)
CSync pin can't be used as-is, it might work but also might not and can draw too much current

Word of advice: don't kill yourself over geometry. It's one of those things that's damn near impossible to get right and you'll never be happy with it. Get all the lines in the grid straight, and then you look at the linearity circles and they're out of whack. Tweak that until its fixed, and then you realize you have a warping/stretching effect on the grid scroll. It just never ends and the more you hyper-focus on it and tweak it, the more you'll keep noticing it and never be happy. Meanwhile none of us noticed any of this shit back in the day because we weren't paying attention.

First, my GDM-FW900. It needs a calibration for sure, and I know how to carry this out. Problem is, there's a blue haze to the very far right of the screen and some slight convergence issues in the bottom corners. Anyone know how the calibration will affect this? It has a lot of hours, but works great other than these two issues.
My B&O ME6000 also has issues, namely it's out of focus around all the edges and there's bowing to the right. I assume there's a focus pot, but I haven't opened it up yet and I'm hesitant to considering how much of a beast it is. Anyone got any clues as to the specifics of this model, and how to access a service menu?
Finally, my Sony 28fx68u. It's a more recent widescreen 100hz set but it looks great for DVDs and widescreen 480i content. Problem is, the colours have been getting more out of wack over the years and the sharpness overall isn't great anymore. What's the best way to go about calibrating a set like this? I have access to the extensive service menu.

Cheers dudes.

i had a 32" sharp CRT for a long long time, i refused to upgrade, i thought it was dying on me a couple of times, the screen was going green and purple in the corners and then it would rectify itself... has great sound aswell, but it was massive and weighed a ton... sadly this died on me about 2 ears ago after years and years of faithful service and i got a flatscreen... i dont know how you feel about emulation but real hardware is hard for me to acrue right now and emulation has been my thing for a few years now.. i dont bother with all the visual gimmicks but playing on the laptop screen is a bit meh, especially for 2 player games... its just trying to figure out this TV ive just got, it was a steal at 50 bucks, i dont even have it hooked up to the net desu.. just wanted the optimum picture for playing some /vr/ thought someone on 1 of the vidya board could help

Is there some trick to getting RGB sync-on-green to work? I have a PS2 hooked up to a PVM via component, and when I switch the PS2 to output RGB I get a scrambled picture, and none of the PVM menu options fix it (RGB int sync, RGB ext sync, etc)

I've said this before and I'll say it again: PVMs are no longer worth it. Get a nice late 90s/early 00s Trinitron with component inputs and a transcoder. Is it as crisp as a PVM? No, but the difference between that and a PVM is marginal. And you get a larger screen because you won't be getting a PVM with a large screen unless you want to shell out like 1.5 grand.

I say all this as someone with both a PVM and a 32" trinitron. I do prefer the PVM for single player gaming, but I also only paid a very small amount.

Sony Trinitron tubes are the best, though Mitsubishi made a great tube toward the end of the CRT era. Sony tubes are hidden in many branded units...Sometimes a dell, HP or even IBM. I am in my late 30s, and still hear it. I wear ear plugs at work, so I think this is a sign that I am treating my head pretty good.

Also, I updated my setup over the last 48 hours. I did some work to my (Not retro) OG Xbox with a clock capacitor removal and got myself a new storage system for all the controllers and other game paraphernalia. Everything fit except the PSX. I am almost sure that IF I get a PSOne, I will be able to put it aside the N64 and then have all my systems under the TV, but I hate the PSOne. I may try to find one with a stealth mod chip, but I am good for a bit. I finally got all the junk off the top of the TV, and am thrilled with how clean it is now. Plug the scph-1060/10130/guncon adaptor into the console, plug the component cable into the adaptor then run to the R, G and B inputs on the monitor as usual. You can play video games on them.

You can watch videos on them.

You can commit murder by tricking someone into going first when taking it down a flight of stairs.

It's just a really blanket question that you can't give a good answer to. They're essentially a mix between a massive TV (with RGB) and a computer monitor. Using them for productivity and office work would be a bit difficult, but just about anything you could use a PC CRT or a SD CRT TV for, you can do with a one of these presentation monitors. They have better video inputs, and a sharper image than the CRT TV (composite handling, at least on my 3730 ain't the nicest in it's current condition), but aren't going to be able to give you as absolutely sharp and perfectly resolved image as a PC CRT but you get something like 4 times the screen size in return.

>>5146925

I'm slightly more worried now that I can see that there are things connected to it and that there's a resistor on this side of the board. For a professional electronics repairman this would be a fairly trivial repair. It won't necessarily be cheap(though it could be), they'll probably want to do it right and make sure it will be long-lasting. I don't have time to look at the service manual for your PVM right now but you may be putting additional stress on other components by continuing to use it without fixing that. Show these pictures to some local electronics shops and ask for an estimate. That monitor looks to be really clean and in good condition, just based on the pic of the BNC connectors you posted earlier, and it would be worthwhile to look into getting it fixed.

All of them are basically fine, with some minor tweaks.

I've gone through 6 sets in the last couple years, and I'm sick of grabbing one, only to have it disappoint.

I'd rather pay and have a set be perfect, then go on searching forever. I have yet to even actually play a game on any of them.

Thats good to know, I haven't been using this pvm anyway because it seems to be permanently magnetized, maybe because of the damage to the board or because of the actual shock it took in transit. Either way Im not concerned, if I don't get it repaired ill just give it to someone else who will. just glad I broke even on this one. lesson learned.

permanent color damage like that would be due to a warping of the slot mask. My guess is it isn't that, and you just need to manually degauss it

what do you have that hooked up with, wii component? because it looks almost as good as my PVM

Swipe right in camera if you're on android and go into pro mode. Adjust ISO mode and brightness, also piss around with manual focus. I think ISO of sub 60 lets you take the best pics without the screen shudder/tear/black bar effect.

Question. As a person with an OSSC that I hardly ever use, why should I keep it? I have a framemeister and some other equipment. I bought the OSSC for lagless situations, but fucking fuck that thing is so much more of a pain to get working in comparison to the competitors or alternatives.

What I am mainly asking is: What situations do you think the OSSC completely deserves a spot on a shelf next to other scalers, transcoders, etc? Is it just the 'lag free' reasoning to keep it around.

Also before people ask, I have plenty of CRTs, projectors, gaming monitors, tvs (OLED too). I use these scalers and similar when I want to game on something bigger than 27 inch pvm or 36 inch consumer crt.

thats soooooo annoying

>> No.5149083

can the NES do s-video or is the process to getting so annoying that i might as well just get an RGB mod and then find a way to run component on that.

Only way you can get S-video out of a NES is RGB mod then convert RGB to S-video, the standard PPU graphics chip is composite only.

NESRGB has S-Video out. If you want component as well, there's a small addon board + TRRS jack available.

You need to connect them with a cable RGB to VGA Male to Female, support resolution up to 1080p.
