What was that kid's deal? The one who always made up bullshit about his dad/uncle who worked at Nintendo/Sega and pretended to have non-existent games/consoles? What was the purpose of their bullshit?

If you were that kid, what did you get out of your bullshit? Were you just a pathological liar or what?

Posted in /vr/ because I'm pretty sure this stopped being a thing no later than sixth gen, MAYBE seventh at absolute latest.

>> No.5137432

I've never known anyone like this IRL, to me it's purely an internet meme.

>> No.5137467

Not a nephew personally, but as an empath I can paint you a picture so you understand the mindset of a nephew better.

You've got low self esteem, for various reasons. Maybe you're smaller than all the other kids, or maybe you get made fun of for the way you run, maybe you have to wear LA gears while everyone else has Nikes, or maybe you're just fat.

Either way, you constantly feel pathetic and inferior among your peers. You may not acknowledge it (for fear of exacerbating the situation), but it cannot be ignored.

The only thing that seems to ease this feeling is if you can somehow elevate yourself above someone. Anyone. You don't have to be the most popular kid. You just need to not feel like the most worthless.

What seems like an easy path to social elevation? What if you had or knew something that nobody else had or knew? But what? What do these kids even care about? Shoes? No. You'd be expected to bring shoes to school. Clothes? Same thing. A tangible skill? That would require demonstration. A toy? Yeah. What kind? What's popular? Nintendo? Sega? Playstation? That's what everyone is talking about. Yeah. That's an easy white lie. Nobody can PROVE you don't have an uncle that works at Nintendo. And because Nintendo is like in Japan or somewhere far away, they can't even expect to ever MEET your uncle. Nice.

"Oh yeah? Well my uncle works for Nintendo and he let me play the new Super Mario Bros 4. Yeah, it's pretty cool. I think you guys will really like it when it comes out next year."

You know what's awful though? Trying this bullshit around a guy like me. Because not only am I an empath, but I'm also a sadist.

And now the pain begins, you little lying ass bitch. I see right in to the core of you and I will feed on your greatest fears. And when I'm done with you, I'm going to go find that kid with the Canadian girlfriend with DD tits.

I really hope it was copypasta as those last two sentences are the cringiest thing i can remember reading. Writer either thought it was a funny ironic LARP or there was at least some modicum of sincerity with hyperbole, and both possibilities are simply awful.

I had a friend who claimed to have already beaten MM less than a day after it had come out. Another friend and I called him out on his bullshit demanding he take us to his house and show the save file. He was of course still on the first temple. He tried to claim he "accidentally" deleted the save and had to start over but we were having none of it.

Then there was this other kid, a friend of a friend, who kept claiming his mom worked for microsoft and he already had a copy of Halo 2 (this was in 2002). I met so many of these kinds of kids growing up. I don't know WHY they did it, but I do remember how most of them smelled.

it was in 3rd and 4th grade after pokemon came out and that mother fucking mew in the truck thing, so many people at my school talked about and a few of them said they had so and so in their family working for nintendo. i think they were just circle jerking each other in hopes they could find a mew... only to find out you actually can glitch a mew and catch all 151 pokemon on one cartridge with the mew glitch. Aint that a bitch, holy fucking shit i would have loved for that to be a secret like misingno and the item dup trick. getting a mew as a kid would have been one of the most satisfying experiences in my adolescence!

I think I remember that back in 5th grade a friend asked me (by way of a written note in class) if I'd heard of the 152nd Pokemon. Turned out he was talking about Missingno. That was the great thing about back then, the lack of easily accessible, reliable information combined with the mysterious nature of actual secrets (or glitches) in old games as well as the general gullibility and fantastical imagination of kids made it seem like all sorts of goofy shit was entirely possible.

As a kid I was sure that the screenshots on the back of the US Super Mario Bros. 3 box were in the game somewhere. I think one of my acquaintance's older sisters even told me that there was a World 0 or something in that game.

In my case, my dad cheated on my mom before I was even born, and then left her to raise me all by herself in some shitty apartment without paying a single dime.
My dad working for Playstation and giving me free games was just me trying to pretend my dad cared for me and that my family could afford videogames.

I knew a guy whose dad actually was a Nintendo Rep. He had tons of Not for Resale carts and eventually Gamecube Demo Discs since his dad was the one who had to go retrieve them from displays and replace them with newer product, Since most of it was to be sent off to be destroyed, unless it was super high security stuff like competition carts, Nintendo typically didn't care if one or two copies went missing. I actually managed to get a few Gamecube Demo Discs because of this, just by asking if he could get me a few.

Unlike the standard "my dad works at nintendo" kid, he was actually pretty cool.

I was in class with someone like that, he was also on the last level of any game before anyone else was (remember him telling me that FFVIII's final boss was a business man wearing a turtle shell over himself). He later failed 7th grade. He got into many fights, including choking someone to the point where they passed out and he had to be sent to the bad boy school. He's been arrested a few times for assault, and was accused of raping someone. Last I heard, he was in a relationship with a minor.

The only lie I ever made was telling my schoolmates in first grade that my dad was a sciantist and he was able to make a baby dinosaur, like in jurassic park. I told them I had a baby triceratops at home.
It was actually more about me wanting that to be real, rather than wanting attention.
Never lied about vidya though. In fact, a lot of times I told some school mates that I had this or that new game, they thought I was lying, but I wasn't. Nothing particularly weird, I guess they just thought getting new games as often as I did was uncommon, which I guess it's true.

I moved away from my old town 12 years ago.
I went back and visited him 2 years ago and god damn not a thing changed aside from him being an adult with nice house and a good job.
While he may no longer "have an uncle that works for nintendo/whoever" he apparently has a plethora of other connections and knowledge so he says.

I think a lot of it had to do with how little information and news you actually got about video games back then. People made shit up and imagined what was coming up in the future of games. I mean, it's only going to be a little while before a pre internet kid ran out of real facts about games and just made shit up to keep the gaming conversation going.

Also, this was the period before smart phones and ceaseless entertainment. As kids we got bored and sometimes made shit up just to see if people believed it. People still do this where I work, make up a rumor at one end of the factory and see if an accomplice hears the rumor at the other end of the factory.

To me thought, even as a kid, I just thought the person who's uncle worked for nintendo was desperately trying to fit in with their peers. We used to have to socialize and it was more difficult for some. Fellow autists on 4chan should be well aware of how easy it is to fail while trying to socialize.
