My understanding was KillPixel was working on it with a team for some years, with the goal of producing a demo for Q2 2018. That's around the same time when several Quake mappers were approached and/or hired by 3D Realms to work on the Quake engine game. They're almost all working remotely but under the 3DR brand.

When you do a piece of placeholder content, that is clearly there to be later disposed of, you can still throw together something at least of some interest to you, something that has some sort of idea to it, if for no other reason, than to train yourself a bit, to use the opportunity to further hone your skills or your vision, or simply to experiment a bit, to save you some time on further experimenting along the road.

Being all like "Oh I'll just do completely whatever, but then, when The Time Comes and Everything Is Ready, I'm gonna turn on my Le Artist mode and create Le Masterpiece from Le Inspiration that would be nothing alike those crude testing whatevers", in my opinion, is not good position to be it. Because it just might so happen, that When The Time Comes, you will be just like Romero, when asked what his Le Awesumsauce RPG Game About Magic Hammer would be all about. No specifics. Improvising second-grade filler content to fill out the gaps. You don't MAGICALLY become ready for making release-grade content for your game. And it is 90% not a matter of a flash of inspiration. You get to the point of being capable to produce release-grade content through copious research, inventing and collecting know-hows. If you rather waste your time, instead of preparing yourself, then your actual released content will probably be generally noticeably worse than it should've been based on how you initially imagined it.

tl;dr: test content IS much more representative of the released content, than it might initially seem

Heya, guys! I'd like to hear your opinions on this idea:

Several worlds are collinding together, and all sorts of "end of the world" scenarios happen in all of them, Nazis opening portals to hell, robot uprising, mutant rebellions, zombie apocalypse, alien invasions, nuclear wars, anomalous magical disasters etc.
and the Protagonist has to fight his way out through all of them.
Every world has its own enemies, as well as a set of weapons and magic/tech for player, but the player is not limited in their use (like in other games that follow same idea) and can use any weapon in any world, though ammo/mana for "out ofplace" weapons would be scarcer at first.
In the first ~25% of the game worlds are relatively separate and player gets to visit each one, but then they begin to merge - pieces and locations of one world get "sewn in" the fabric of the others, and its inhabitants hate each other as much as the player.
The situation becomes more twisted and insane as the game progresses.

Another sort-of-core idea is that every level has one or two secrets with unique weapons/spells that aren't the part of main arsenal and can range from a fun novelty to an alternative/improved versions of the earlier weapons that can't be acquired anywhere else, so if the base arsenal is 14-16 guns, then the complete one would be 30-40.

Every significant secret among other things carries a significant bonus - either aforementioned unique weapon/spell or a max health/mana/armor bonus (1-3 points depending on secret). Health bonus secrets usally involve summoning a miniboss of sorts (enhanced version of base enemy with additional attacks and improved HP).

Alright two things:
1) This is an idea that has been tried and tested. Project Warlock literally just did it. Daikatana tried it and failed hard.

2) Even if you started working on it, you won't finish it. The concept of making that many different textures and combining them slowly over time is a lot more work than you think. Having that many weapons and sub bosses and enemy types and level layouts, it's just ludicrous. If you could pull it right out of your head and slap it onto a screen, and it would be perfect, sure I would play it. However, it would never be what you're imagining it to be right now.

Sorry to be so negative but honestly, I think you'd be much better off starting at a mapset. Make a few of the different environments and worlds, then see how you fare. If you feel like it's possible, you could push for it, but I never would.

E4M1 starts you somewhat tough, and keeps you starved on ammo and health.
E4M2 starts you pretty rough, also not giving you a whole lot of health or ammo.
E4M3 starts you with a dozen hidden shotguns aiming at you, as well as the attention of a bunch of others, you really gotta rush and secure a spot for yourself SOMEWHERE or else you probably die (as a sidenote, this level is pretty much not playable with mods such as Hideous Destructor).
E4M9 starts you surrounded (mostly by low tier mooks, however).

The first couple of maps of E4 start you pretty harsh, but it really calms down after M3/M9, and then the difficulty really isn't particularly bad for the rest of the episode.
I kind of wish it would have maintained that theme for all of it.

Beat it. It was easier when I changed my strategy, and got the Chaingun and armor first. Then using just the standard shotty, take out the Cyberdemon on the ledge where he can't hit me. Then after that I go for the Super Shotgun, and others.

That path makes things way easier. Getting the SS without armor is a bit of a luck game since it spawns tons of Shot gun zombies.

Epic 2 isn't TOO much my taste, Alex 'Eternal' takes a lot of cues from Eternal Doom, which I never loved.
He does however do MUCH better, what Eternal Doom itself did, and though I never loved tracking for switches or wading through large swathes of monsters that often, Epic 2 is very well made, particularly with the visuals.

Stuck on Mother Brain or whatever. Problem is, I have no clue what her attack pattern is, so I die within 15 seconds of facing her. Then slogging through like 8 minutes of monster fighting to get her. Rince repeat. Stuck on her for hours.

Enemy that has killed me the most in D64 by far? Lost Souls. They're unbelievably aggressive and strong. If one catches you off guard, suddenly you've lost 50+ health.

Pain Elementals have to be treated like boss characters, and need to be assassinated ASAP. In comparison, Barons of hell and Hell Knights are just Imps with more HP.

The monster fighting can be avoided if you have found all demon keys in the secret levels.
As for the boss itself, circle-strafe and avoid her ground attack (run away straight from her if fireballs are chasing you). Until then, conserve as much health and cells as you can for the boss.

Once I had finished Doom 2 I felt like defending it too, but then I just don't feel like replaying it, the first level is so basic that it feels like a beta, the second level is rather mediocre and apart from that I feel like a void in my brain remembering what comes after, I remember a bit of downtown which took me a while to go "oh is actually supposed to resemble a city", for which hell, at least make some more custom sprites, put some lamp post, windows, some cars.

Final Doom and to a lesser extent Master Levels are actually hard. Don't worry. Doom 1 and 2 are easy. Thy Flesh Consumed is the only hard section.

Pistol start, UV, no saves, is the real challenge there. I did ti, and it took me a few weeks. You really have to "solve" the levels, like a big puzzle.

There is, but it only saves you so much. Because tanking damage is generally a bad idea, using cover is generally a good idea (but only works for a brief time, because they'll come looking for you or throw bombs).

There's also a glitch in the original .exe, where if you load a save, then suddenly the damage scaling will be inverted for your difficulty, so say you make a save in a level on easy mode, then load that save, you will find that the damage scaling will be set to hard, and shit hurts extra much.
There was no way to fix this in the original .exe without just progressing to the next level, where it would reset to normal again, leading many to the practice of saving before exiting a level, and just reload from there if needed.

With the BloodGDX sourceport, this is fixed, and what you can do is that you can customize your difficulty level to your liking, adjusting amount of monsters as well as damage scaling.

I'd try for DOSBox for very first playthrough, just so you get the closest experience to original. The original colour palette is much richer and nicer than GDX, sounds are slightly different, too. The sector lighting is absent in GDX (like how GZDoom lacks original doom shading effect), which makes a huge difference in Blood's atmosphere and is really pretty to look at. You'll get the original atmosphere at the cost of GDX's super slick performance and control. When you're done with your first playthrough, try out GDX and see if you prefer it. You can also check out BMouse for DOSBox Blood to make the mouse control better.

Of courseif you try DOSBox and think that the performance is just too shit for you to put up with then just go to GDX.

So i've grabbed bloodGDX and i'm trying it out, and i'm pretty disappointed so far. I have a GTX770 (still slightly more powerful than a 960 or 1050) and a decent CPU, yet this is running sluggish. If i turn the res down from 1440p to 720p it is a little more responsive but i can still feel the heavy mouse lag while looking around.
A second problem is the mouse acceleration - there is a wicked strong acceleration curve on the mouse aim and i can't see how to turn it off.

Why doesn't my gamma increase get detected by nVidia video capture? On my screen it actually gets brighter, but on shadowplay it stays the same. wtf? any help?

I can't make the OGL renderer look as good as the software renderer. Is there some setting I'm missing here? The software renderer looks great but unfortunately on modern wads my laptop can't hold up the FPS. With OGL I get 200 FPS pretty much all the time.
