Is the comedy genre dead in vidya? There was plenty of parody or honest attempts to be humorous in video games during the 90s and early 00s, but I think games take themselves too seriously nowadays.

This exactly. Anyone who disagrees can look at the sequels for how they refined the series further. All of them are fun natured....Oh wait. There was no sequel to CTR? Crash, the unofficial mascot of PSX? Diddy Kong surely has a sequel also right? Again, NOPE. N64 MK is quite possibly the best one in the series & is certainly better then the competition.

I love games that break down the 4th wall from time to time. Very few contemporary games do this, and you are right...they take themselves much too serious. There are a few, but not many "AAA" titles. Far Cry Blood Dragon really feels like one of the funniest games that knows its a game. Honestly, it feels like a successor to Duke Nukem much more then DNF. Its a short game, but it has lots of jokes and innuendo that had me laughing just as much as Conkers does. The "Side missions" are all 2 dimensional, and don't try to be complex. Save a scientist or kill an animal...but the reasons for doing these is enough to have the main character even question "What the fuck?"

CTR went on to put itself out on EVERY system available in the 6th gen except the Dreamcast. The unofficial mascot of Sony on most every 6th gen console. After that it apparently fizzled out.

Competing with Nintendo on something like a cart game is going to be a tough sell for anyone.

Mario Kart 7 or 8? Sure better than CTR but CTR>MK64 any day on this timeline. The main reason why CTR is so good is how you drift. It doesnt feel too slidy in fact thats why I dislike double dash.

I have (correction my kids have) both a wii, wii-u and gameboy 2DS-XL, and I didn't play much of any of them...however if I take their time playing as any indication, they played the shit out of the 2DS. They LOVED the n64 version before we got the wii....They are not as critical as I am, but I found that the 2ds version played so close to the N64 version that I was able to wupp their asses in the first race I played against them. I never raced them again because they are just casual fucks. I get too into proper power slides, and am cutthroat....which I learned from mom.

My mom is 64 now. Dad and her used to play mario kart 64 every night since getting the system in the late 90s. It was the reason they got the system. I borrowed it from a friend, and they were so impressed that they got it. Dad got sick for 5 years, and mom missed out on lots of game play. Dad couldn't play due to the nature of his illness. He died 2 years ago, and she is back to her old tricks...smoking grass, having an irish coffee and being the most cutthroat and calculating MK64 player ever. It is not a meme. My mom is quite possibly one of the best Peach racers ever. She makes jumps through hole in the beach track. She knows where to jump in star road to shortcut half the track. I don't know how to explain it. She sucks at all other vidya.

I lost track of what they call the games after the N64. I just lost track of gaming after the 5th generation. Perhaps I am just trapped in time. I know that the wii version was not for me because it required people to do dumb shit like turn the controller like my parents did with the Nintendo controller back in the 80s. It took a decade to break them of that habit, and then there was a game that required it. My kids didn't like it as much as the n64 version. They loved it on the GC & The 2DS for sure however. However, both of the 2ds have died....their cousins will break things that they don't want to share. It is easier to spike something off the floor than to give it back or give it up to someone else...Not even joking, but I refuse to let them touch any of our electronics, and keep doors locked when they are visiting. I don't get mad, I just force them to stay in the same room as their parents. They hate their kids, so its a great punishment for them all.
