What does /VR/ think of this game?

I find myself coming back to it almost every other year.

The ost and weird visuals give it a very interesting and otherworldly atmosphere, which was probably only partially intentional since all subsequent games feel extremely generic in comparison

Also Onikage did literally nothing wrong

I've been infatuated with it since its release but I'm just fucking terrible at it.

OST is amazing. I recall really enjoying Wrath of Heaven at the time, it's a game I'd like to revisit at some point.

the OST was fantastic, the mission "Execute the Corrupt Minister" was my favorite track, I prefer the gameplay and story of the sequel, this does have excellent moments

That mission wasn't even in the original japanese game iirc. It's one of the really comfy ones, and the music does play a part

It's kind of weird how Ayame gets a legit boss battle in this one while Rikimaru actually shames the dude into offing himself.

Amazing series, but it'd be better if it toned down on the supernatural stuff and bossfights and instead focused more on big stealth levels

Love the game and the series, now it seems to be a little dead. For some reason it always have been despised by stupid videogame journalism.
Sekiro Dies Twice was going to be a new Tenchu but Miyazaki changed his mind, I just hope Acquire gets the rights again and it's not the end.

Also, Tenchu1 is one the best examples of great low res 3D graphics, but it wasn't appreciated like that in the day.

>feel extremely generic in comparison

Not at all, Tenchu 3 is basically a remake of 1, and Fatal Shadows tries it's own thing, probably being the most beautiful in the series. Maybe only Z is actually generic.

there was a time I played it a lot, that one and the second; different from one another but both great.

I played the hell of the first level on a demo disc back in the day, since you still got the three layout possibilities. Then I rented the game and the third level kicked my ass with the bullshit camera and the bear boss

>> No.5132263

I don't understand the layout thing, can someone help a brainlet?

>> No.5132305

>>5132263
Each time you play a level you get a random enemy/civilian/item/etc layout picked from 3 possibilities. Nothing dramatic, but it can alter the way you approach the mission; for example, a "safe spot" in one of the layouts could have a dog hanging around in a different one that will bark and give you away.

It prevents the player from learning blind runs to speedrun the leveI. For example in the first level you can go toward the first goal through the rooftops and through an attic, but sometimes there's a guard having a nap there

I played it as a kid and it had a really surreal, almost nightmarish effect with the fog and darkness (at least in some of the levels). One of those gory PS1 games that left and imprint on my childhood. Played through and beat my copy back in the mid 2000's. It was a really fun playthrough and had some decent challenge, very satisfying. Not retro but Tenchu Wrath of Heaven/Return from Darkness are the best imo. They are an overall improvement and a better playthrough.

I never played 2, worth a plathrough?

Despite tank controls and minuscule drawing distance, it's still my favorite ninja franchise by a mile.

As an alternative there are also the Shinobido games be the original developers.
Shinobido: Way of the Ninja (PS2)
Shinobido: Tales of the Ninja (PSP/PSVita (emulated)) which is essentially just a collection of Levels from the edit mode of the first game
Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen (PS Vita)

These games filled the gap that Tenchu left pretty good for me, but especially Shinobido 2 is no game for people who hate backtracking or seeing the same level a couple of times, since you will play the various levels with different enemy layouts and objectives > 10 times.

Great game. Just did a Grand Master run recently. Play Wrath of Heaven on PS2, its the best one. Tenchu 2 was weird. It improved some mechanics, but decided to not have music, which was fantastic in the first one, instead they decided to pay extra to have MGS voice actors. And also made getting Grand Master ridiculous, never bothered with it.

yeah, how do you get grand master in tenchu 2? it just required 400+ score on the first

>> No.5133308

>>5133301
They tried doing musical cues for gameplay context, like that jingle that happens when a guard detects something.

>> No.5133319

>>5133305

In the first game it was very intuitive. You can actually get Grand Master by not killing anyone, as long as you're not seen at all, which makes sense, you're a ninja. On 2 you need to kill either everyone on the stage and never be seen, or at the very least like 15 people on stages that have more than that, and never be seen. I don't know, it always seemed finnicky. I even played it right after Tenchu 1 a couple weeks ago and got Master Ninja many times when I was sure Grand Master was coming.

>>5133308
Yes, which are good, but the atmosphere felt lacking still. At least the gave us stages during the day as well.

>> No.5133339

there's a level where you are climbing up high in the hills/mountains and have to make your way across thin ledges

if you perform an execution while on these ledges, Rikimaru does a little twirl and flings himself to his death

it's a major design oversight and has always pissed me off. besides that i love the game and its sequel is rad too
