Hi niggas.

I think I might have OCD or something. I love video games, especially retro games, but I have this obsession with not cheating.

Here's an example: The other day I was playing a retro game, and wanted to have a look at the original instruction manual, so I looked it up online and found a pdf link. I clicked it, but before it opened I saw it was called strategy guide or something like that. I immediately I tried to close it while looking away, but I got a tiny glance of a map. A world map I think. I pretty much don't remember it at all.

Now just because I got this fucking little glance at some map, I'm obsessing like crazy about this being cheating. Fuck I hate this feeling.

OP is trying to false flag emulator kiddies who use savestates, walkthroughs and fast forward.

>> No.5126810 [DELETED]

>>5126808

And seems to have worked, considering the very first post is a seething emulator kiddie that thinks using savestates constitutes actually beating a game.

Not sure why you called us n-words, that's patently offensive, but you should try to ascend in NetHack. It's super fun without spoilers, it's just the craziest game and it's really rewarding to learn how things work without cheating.

I don't use save states, but for some of these jrpgs I check a guide occasionally. I don't have time to find that one npc that tells me where to go.

Before you start blaming LE ZOOMER BOOGEYMAN I should remind you that in-game cheats was a classic era tradition and modern games completely did away with them. Probably so they could sell you more lootboxes.

You play too many games and/or are too disconnected from real life. Get out more and get perspective. My guess is you're using games as escapism.

This honestly seems common with gamers nowadays. People obsess too much over having blind playthroughs, and even going as far as to avoid any mechanics that could be considered broken or "overpowered."
I think the best way to break the habit would be to find a game that's still hard even when you're going out of your way to spoil it. Something like a kaizo romhack, a classic roguelike, an arcade shmup, etc. Maybe try to get into a competitive game, since those are rarely playable without looking up strats and glitches.

Thanks! This is good advice, but I really really want to save the experience of the game I wrote about in the original post.

You're an idiot. There are no rules about how a person plays a single player video game. You could literally cheat your way through every game you ever play and no one would give a shit. Or you could never cheat at all and do every single game 100% blind. No one would give a shit about that either.

Do what you want with your own time.

Of course there are rules you moron. If you're playing a single player game of chess, and "won" because you used a cheat that makes you able to move the pieces any way you want, you didn't fucking win. Only children and retards think that's winning.

>> No.5126925

>>5126805
OP I don't know if you are baiting or not but I'm really exactly like that.
I hate spoilers in games, guides, cheats and walkthroughs.
Especially if it's a game I really like.
I try to make my first experience of it as pure as I can.

I go all out on a second playthrough and look everything up.

>> No.5126926

>>5126875
"blind playthrough" is a funny term, it seems to suggest a "blind playthrough" is some variety of playthrough while it's actually just the NORMAL fucking way to play the game. A blind playthrough isn't some weirdass variation, it's the default way to play, for most games at least.

I'm kind of like OP, but then I remember I'm basically retarded and bad at videogames so I probably shouldn't worry about what help I accidentally. Also remember that back in the day you could easily see things in magazines or find out things you probably shouldn't know by listening in on conversations. As long as you're not intentionally poring over the material, it doesn't make that much difference. Very unlike spoiling a tv show or movie.

I'm dead fucking serious. Have you ever accidentally done something like what I did, and if so, do you know how to stop obsessing about it?

Basically what >>5126926 said.
Also alcohol.

It's kinda funny. I wasn't like this before.
Used to play GTA 3(I know not retro, I was like 15 at the time) and use all the cheats I knew and go on a rampage but never finished the game.
Then one day, out of boredom I decided to play without using any cheats and I found the game to be a lot more fun and rewarding, also finished it.

Anyway, don't stress yourself too much with it. Games are made to be fun.
Usually when the game stops being fun and just tedious or a chore to progress I look something up. But I start with hints on where to go or what to do instead if checking a guide.

Thanks for the reply. I did the same in Vice City. Haha I wish I could go back to not giving a shit. My little brother finished Zelda BotW the other day and he was very excited and happy about it, even though he had used the internet here and there. It's easy to forget how to just have fun.

>> No.5127009

>>5126971
You can go back.
Just have fun. I know how satisfying you can feel when you complete a game with no help other than what the game gives you but a lot of the games were designed around a guidebook, hints in the game manual, on the case, etc.
There's no shame in getting help.
And if googling is not your thing then just ask on a forum or your friends for hints.
Discussing a game you like with others is also part of the fun!

After all, it's why we're all here.

I have OCD and I also used to obsess about exactly this, it's almost uncanny. Think of it this way: it doesn't matter as long as you have fun. That's what video games are for anyway, aren't they. If that doesn't help, realize that it's impossible to "not cheat" because even your specific set of genetics have already given you an advantage over someone else at video games. You might've been born with a better reaction time or better strategic thinking than person x, so playing against them, you're already at an unfair advantage. So my advice is just enjoy the game and realize that you already saw the map or whatever and there's nothing you can do about it now.

Most modern games really dont require too much cheating but for retro games cheats and tips were fucking gold dust back in the day. Its why we bought magazines!!! You're being ridiculous.

shut the fuck up you dumb stupid baby art is not about "having fun" and some of the most successful games are those which intentionally bring hardship on the player.
