Use this fixed exe for the gog version. It limits the game to 30fps and 640x480. However, getting it to work properly with a 3rd party software to limit the framerate (e.g. rivatuner) may be better than using the forced framerate executable.

You really nailed it on this. Drivers, networking, and software can be a real chore. While building my 98SE/XP machine I had to try several XP service packs until it allowed proper networking and Windows updates. Of course, because I threw two gigs of RAM in it, my 98SE partition won't boot so now I have to look into HimemX. It's all very cool in theory but can be rather frustrating in practice. And fuck Blizzard for patching Diablo II so badly that it locks my machine when I try to get on BNet. Is that how it's gonna be? Fine, I'm installing PlugY and taking all my shit offline. And don't forget VXD vs. WDM drivers.
I did score a wired-only Linksys fast ethernet switch from a Salvation Army, actually. Kinda curious to use it with the handful of relevant consoles and PC's. Adds a nice authentic touch compared to the rest of the gigabit ethernet stuff I have.

I don't know, the term "millenial" was just a funny term that came up a lot a few years ago and the way it was used was about people born in 1995 or at most 1990. That may not be the academic usage but that's how it was used. Young people may of course be perfectly smart and informed, but usually they're not, and it can be funny to just roll your eyes and say "millenials". I look back and cringe and hope nobody ever finds things I wrote online when I was 15/16.

Thing is, now even those millenials are like 27, married, with kids, millionaires etc., they're no longer clueless. So now when someone immature says something really dumb we needed a new term and it's called zoomers, the zoomer generation.

As much as I like playing Duke Nukem, I'd never go back to play it on DOS now that Eduke and other alternatives (like Megaton or World Tour) are perfectly playable on modern PCs. Same with Doom, it's just much more fun to play it through Windows but hey, maybe I'm biased because I only played it through Eduke and DOSbox in the past 5 years and I don't remember how much different it plays compared to actually playing it on an actual DOS computer (c'mon it's been 18 years since I actually used MS-DOS natively, I can't remember everything as well as I used to).

It's playable on a 6800GT and high end Pentium III/Tbird setup. Potato-tier settings, but still playable.
And you can definitely use better hardware than that. Win98 will happily run on P4s, A64s or even more modern CPUs and you can run a 7900GT or GTX on it. Hell I've had it running on a Core2 myself even though it could only use the first core. PCIe cards work fine provided they have 98-compatible (or can be made compatible) drivers. The OS just thinks they're regular PCI cards.

>why would I need a network acces to this old rig?
Thats so short sited. There is so much that you can do when networked.
I network mount ISOs to play even on a Win95 machine. Shit, I've done it on a 66Mhz 486 with Win95 and it worked fine. Didn't have to worry about getting CDRs burned. And it lets me easy transfer things since network drives are WAY more reliable then USB drives on 9x. Shit, I've had network drives setup on 3.11 even and that was nice, fucking network streamed DOS games lol.

I know it's not really convenient but you probably can run in a VM without issues, or PCem.

Does doom with all of its modifications and updates run on windows 98 any more? The game was released for a platform. The platform was windows 98. The contemporary version is irrelevant....No different then Shenmune I & II on the Xbone/Ps4. They are retro because of the platform they were released on, which was the dreamcast in that case.
