I finished earthbound/mother 2 and really enjoyed it.

which one should I play next mother 1 or mother 3?

Play the original, if you don't like it don't stress it and just move on. The original is more tedious til you really get moving. The original is a good game but it does show it's age in a way that some people just don't enjoy it at all.

Mother 1 is more like Earthbound in tone and setting. It has some plot elements and is pretty open ended in terms of exploration. This game is rather short at about 10-15 hours.

Mother 3 takes place LONG after Earthbound and the story is mostly unrelated but some aspects do carry over. It has a greater focus on its plot but it's nothing bad like hour long cutscenes, just more focus then the prior two games. Combat is more like Earthbound but it has a cool quirk where you can chain combos together. It's about as long as Earthbound at 25-30 hours.

Mother 1 is good.
The whole thing was just an incredibly enjoyable experience for me. It was tough at points, but that's what helps make it fun. You learn how to beat enemies more efficiently every time you play.

But as far as setting and story goes, it's pretty unique, even compared to Earthbound. Mother 1 has a less wacky tone throughout than Earthbound and the setting is never quite as fantastic. But in that regard it feels more like a rural alien mystery. Like the kind of story a bunch of kids would tell each other while camping. It's spooky and surreal without being too zany.

My only real complaints with the game is that the beginning and the final area are both tedious chores. The majority of the game is very fun though, and I'd say its worth putting up with the intro/finale to experience the rest.
