I remember there being a mod with gazoline that could be poured on the floor then ignited with a fire attack.

You could make "watter puddle" flat sprite object that is only vulnerable to electric damage, and make its death state into a same puddle but with shock animation and damage effect that lasts a short while.

Total Chaos is not a Doom mod as it promotes itself. It is an indie techdemo built on top of GZDoom engine and has nothing to do with both Doom and /vr/. Vasyan's mod is still Doom, but is not relevant to /vr/ since all assets that it contains (textures, 3d models) were made after 99, it simply replaces all original 93 art with 00-18 stuff.

With all this talk about iwads having both good and bad maps....
I wonder why didn't anybody yet made a program that allows you to configure and create your own custom iwad.
Basically, it has all of the Doom iwads, and you can choose what levels from them to include/exclude.
You can just make a wad that has half of Doom 2 levels. Or maybe a wad that has like ten of your favourite D2 levels, some levels from Plutonia, a couple from TNT, ect.
Or you could just enable all levels from then.
And then also have the option to make it either continuous (in the order that you want) or episodic.
And an option to force pistol starts if you want.
Maybe could even have randomization features.

So all of this but in a simple program that anyone can use.

It's actually really well done.
Most of the maps look different and not maze-like like in the original.
There's a good variety of weapons and there are some new enemies as well.
The boss fights,at least with Hans and Schabbs are not tedious like and boring like in v4.5.

Quake 1 was a magical result of really awful circumstances, which they never ever intended to revisit because it was all a bunch of compromises which never quite made anyone of them happy (though even Romero, who felt the most miffed, would gladly agree that the resulting game was still very good). Quake 2 was intended as an all new, unrelated game, but which got stuck with the title because they couldn't use the title they really wanted.
Again, iD were not in the headspace where they intended to go back to that, not any time soon.
The idea of an actual sequel in Quake 1's setting is ironically much more likely today, where the company is mostly staffed by different people, and there's nostalgia for how different that game was from the rest of the series. I like Doom 4 too. It's flawed yes, and the multiplayer sucks. But I enjoyed the more aggressive play style the game encouraged by giving you goodies from running up glory killing monsters. I think it would have been better if they didn't stop you for each one, but having to risk your ass to close the gap and then turning the tide of a fight is cool. I also like the subweapons the game offers, leech grenades are also cool.

Doom isn't capped to 12 enemies on the ENTIRE LEVEL like D44M is.
Plus you actually can fight more than 12 enemies at once in unmodded Doom in a single area on Nightmare. Let alone WADs (which is yet another area D44M is a complete failure of a sequel).
Also, you're unironically comparing a 1996 game to a 2016 game. Sequels should be straight upgrades in every way from their predecessors to justify their existence, especially when they've had 20+ years to improve.

Actually, those QTEs were a cancerous addition to the Doom formula. Once you've seen the animations the first couple times, getting locked into a standing still position to kill a single enemy immediately stops becoming fun for the rest of the game.
The only reason I haven't mentioned those QTEs thus far is because it's "optional" (let's ignore for a second that the health and ammo placement is based around the assumption you will use the QTEs).

The Doom series isn't the Quake series. Quake was Lovecraftian horror, Doom's appeal was ripping through hordes of demons with powerful weapons.
Plus, that was one of Quake's few flaws, while Quake didn't have many of the flaws Doom 2016 has.
And Quake was 20 years ago when 3D tech was only just emerging and technological limitation was a much bigger issue. It isn't comparable in the slightest to a game made in 2016, which you would expect to be better in every way.

Thy Flesh was released after Doom 2 came out, so it was intended for players who were well acquainted with the game. It's pretty uneven in difficulty - it starts like a motherfucker, hits you even harder with the second map, lets up some on the third, noticeably cools down for the next two, fucks you again on E4M6, and then pretty dramatically relaxes for the last two maps.

I'm not that dude and boy do I hate the idea of wading into this fucking stupid argument, but there's at least something worth saying here. Being able to run from fights actually points to something integral to what makes Doom what it is, and old school shooters more broadly. With a lot of modern shooters that claim to evoke old school design (Serious Sam, Painkiller, Hard Reset, Shadow Warrior, Doom 2016, etc), there's a clear distinction between level layout and combat - you walk through a linear level and maybe have to pop a few enemies, and eventually enter a situation where you're forced into combat, and when that's resolved, you go back to walking through that linear level until the next showdown. You never have to have a broad spatial awareness of the full map because once the fight is over, you're never going back except for pickups for the next showdown.

But in Doom and other old school shooters, enemies are actually integrated into the level design itself. There's no distinction between "explore level" and "fight enemies" - enemies are present everywhere and affect where you can go based on the resources you have, which requires the player to be aware of what their tactical options are. There may be times where it's preferable to run, there may be times where it's preferable to fight, or you may need to have varying degrees of fighting and running. This fluid mix of combat and exploration gives a much broader space to interpret the level and the game as a whole and adds a sense of dynamism that can't really come from "doors lock, no more exploration, fight now."

The best examples of that broad interpretive space are the Compete-N categories. You can beat a level killing everything and finding all secrets, or you can just sprint straight for the exit (and even do that without monsters on the map), or you can fight only what you can with your fists, or you can actively choose not to kill anyone at all.

Doom 2016 is still a great game, btw.

On the other hand, it isn't NEARLY specific enough to be considered a deconstruction of Half-Life 1 specifically. So, the question of what D44M even is, hinges very much on what the subsequent, Marty-Stratton-directed games in the series will end up being, namely, Doom Eternal (and what it will introduce narrative-wise and gamedesign-wise, that D44M didn't have).

tl;dr: D44M, being a remix of previous id games, is, at its core, a "Fuck YOU!" game, but where exactly that "YOU!" is directed remains to be seen. Best case scenario, it's a first chapter of a proper deconstruction of HL1's singpleplayer.

Of all of Doom 3's mistakes, the shotgun was probably among the biggest.
I'd suggest using the chainsaw instead, it doesn't need to reload, and actually has crazy good DPS, if you're willing to get into the habit of maneuvering out of the way for melee attacks (easier than it sounds).
In Resurrection Of Evil, the Super Shotgun kind of makes up for it, because it has twice the pellets and kind of gives you the Doom 2 performance (so there's usually enough shot density that you can kind of hit things farther than at arms length), but you don't get to have the chainsaw.

Well, it's pretty cool looking, and the manner you reload two shells at a time is actually a great idea, but the spread pattern is beyond comical, you literally cannot score a good hit at an "across the street" distance.
Like it isn't even realistically plausible to make buckshot this worthless in real life, even if you were to make your own gun from a piece of pipe.

Contrast to the original game, where the pump-shotgun actually has a reasonably realistic spread, letting you actually use it at medium distances, being excellent for incoming cacos.

A bit apropo of nothing Doom 3 has one mistake that is easily overlooked in normal play, but I was playing in VR recently and the way monsters crouch to avoid attack, or readying to pounce is fucking maddening. They drop down at like 5 times the speed of gravity. It's insanely unnatural, and in VR feels incredibly off.
The shotgun however becomes damn useful, because the method of locomotion is typically teleportation. So you can wait for a fireball to be fling, teleport past it and blast a round into their face.
Overall it's weirdly well balanced for VR, but a bit buggy...

This isn't too bad so far. Just got the second artifact. The controls are a little weird, but not the worst considering that this is a Saturn game. Jumping is way more permissive than I was expecting and I was stuck for a while in the second level just because I didn't realize I could jump so far to begin with.

I was kind of disappointed that returning to the hub area doesn't enter you where you exit, but instead starts you from the start each time, Most of the stages are short enough this doesn't really feel like too much of an issue overall.

Even though it was billed to me as a "fps metroidvania" so far there have been 0 choices to make in terms of paths and the whole thing is super linear. You do tread back and loop on the same paths a lot, which is pretty standard for FPSes of this vintage.

I did for about 15 minutes, but I didn't really care for it in that time. It's neat, but it doesn't have snap turning, and the smooth turning is chunky and feels terrible in VR in any game. I didn't get the controls perfectly set up though because the menu selection would skip options and such, and it wasn't worth me fighting to get it set up right since it wouldn't be perfect anyway.
Maybe I'll try again down the line and see how it goes.
Windows MR headsets are only like 200 bucks with controllers from time to time, and they're actually pretty nice. A scant few games don't play well with them, but that's getting better all the time with OpenVR drivers and steam supporting them more and more. Most games work fine from the get go though, and you get inconsistencies between Vive and Oculus oriented games anyway, and WMR gets a little of both...

Not really. I've used both. The tracking works differently (tracks from the headset instead of tracking stations), and the only issue I've noticed from that is if you drop your arms for an extended time it'll lose tracking for a short period, usually on the left
controller - I'm right handed so that makes sense.
Tracking from the headset makes it easier to set up room-scale, and is less shit to buy, but like I said, if you go idle it'll lose tracking for a bit. Not usually an issue, but in Skyrim (for example) when you're talking to someone for a while you'll start relaxing.
Vive has the best tracking, but also costs more to set up in room scale.

Duke Nukem is fun but it's not the masterpiece that some people make it out to be.
It's not all that funny, just very crude which wasn't much of a thing back then, and just stuck with people.

Second of all the controls and mouse movement has aged incredibly poorly, the solid movement in Quake 1 and Doom 1/2 just blows Duke Nukem out of the water.
Jumping is awkward, mouse movement is yanky, and jumps are often missed because of the strange distance between platforms.

Third the weapon variety just isn't very good, the shotgun feels solid but the pistol is just an inaccurate peeshooter, the chaingun cannon is quite useful but tends to be so powerful the game throws little ammo at you to balance it out, and the RPG is mostly preserved for secret passages and secondary weapon when the chaingun runs out.

The maps are either of pretty good quality, such as the Abyss, or pretty poor quality such as level 2 and 3.
Not sure how much better the maps get since I only played the first mission.

The weapon variety is something that is much better than in Doom. Doom had a worthless pistol, Duke had a pistol that is useful against distant targets as the most accurate hitscan weapon with its own ammo count.

Chaingun OP? Don't get it, it's certainly superior to Doom's peashooter, but the definiton of OP weapon is the SSG or the Plasma Gun. They literally made all the rest worthless (except for the awkward BFG).

Duke also has something outstanding that Doom didn't have: Pipebombs. I stopped counting how often would it be extremely useful on vertical Doom missions (like some parts of Map02 from the original levels).

And the joke weapons like the Shrinker or Freezer are also have a rock-paper-shotgun type of use where certain monsters are sensitive to certain weapons. The Freezer for example works better than anything against Protector Drones.

As for the leveldesign: Episode 1 of Duke is wonderful, it kicks the shit out of Doom's weirdo leveldesign. Later episodes have their dull moments, but even those present us quality maps like Dark Side, Derelict etc. Doom's first proper mapset was NRFTL, which had some kind of sense of place and progression. Doom sounds are more satisfying and despite its semplicity in terms of weapons they're effective and created for all kinds of situations.

The BFG is a weapon of mass destruction but you don't feel OP with it,which helps on make it more satisfying when you use it.

I'm shocked no one's tried to make better sprites. I've seen half-assed 3D models and sprites from years ago.

All you'd need to do is to make 3D models and take images of them from various angles. Keep them 2D, and make them for 640x480 resolution.

Doom64 is really starting to grow on me. I didn't like the first 8 levels that much, especially with the grungy dark industrial theme, but I'm loving all the levels after it. It feels like a continuation of Doom Playstation. It's hard as hell too. I'm loving the new balance, including the enemies being more aggressive, and firing faster. So it looks sorta like Doom PSX, but is actually hard.

I'd love to see the balance changes from 64 back-ported into the regular version. The Pain Elemental got great buffs. If a Lost Soul is blocked from coming out, it just explodes like a rocket. I tried getting up in their face like in original doom, and instantly died. Normal zombiemen are a bit of a threat too. Lost Souls are a huge danger.

Big drawback is that they over rely on barons of hell and Hell Knights. PSX Doom only lacked the Archville, but in this there's no Revnant, or Heavy Weapons guy either. Also, there's no difference between zombies and shotgun zombies. Likely this is all due to budget restrictions and time.

Still not digging the art style or monster designs. And the new weapons look great, but the shotguns lack reload animations.

So right now Doom64 is up there with one of my favorite dooms.

Hi all,

Not sure how many of you have heard of Battle for Wesnoth? I've started work on a Doom conversion for it. It features all of the classic demons with some 'extended' versions for any level ups of units. The UAC will feature a variety of marines too. Credit for all of the graphics go to Id Software and the various artists who publish their work on the ZDoom forums / Realm 667. If you guys have any interest I might publish it when its a little more polished, no doubt there will be imbalances etc but I'd be happy to hear from you all.

Can't really go back to Brutal Doom after High Noon Drifter. Yeah, it has less gore on it's own, grenades bounce too much, and the effects are generally less bombastic, but it's much more smooth than Brutal Doom, doesn't become overbearing as you play it, and is much more pleasurable as result.

Powerslave EX, remake for PC by Kaiser of Doom 64 EX and Strife VE renown. It was taken down for copyright reasons but it's still floating around. Unfortunately mouselook is completely fucked on Windows 10, so you need a controller. But the game was designed for controllers so it's not too bad.

I'll readily admit I'm unsure if it's the same problem, however Quakespasm had severe issues with mouselook on Windows 10 about a year ago due to a Windows update. Major mouse lag/jumping which made no real sense as no-one had updated Quakespasm and yet all of a sudden it was just broken.
Turned out it was some issue with the included sdl2.dll when combined with the Windows update, it impacted a lot of similar ports, and once that was updated it was completely fixed.
Again, unsure if it's the same problem, but if Powerslave EX has an sdl2.dll file alongside the binary (I know Doom 64 EX does) then maybe take the sdl2.dll from the newest version of Quakespasm and copy it over and see if that helps.

I was kind of wondering a bit why he insisted on using the PP7, but then I see that the machineguns, with the full memory and processing to actually rendering everything in real time with no slowdown, cycle absurdly fast, the AR33 appearing and sounding like a three round burst was one single shot. Kind of tricky to fully make practical.
I wonder if this was intentional on Rare's part, in the sense that they were fully expecting it would run much slower on the actual N64 hardware, and adjusted the timing and speed of things accordingly?
Like even the guns you remember as shooting slowly, drain in a second here.
