24 hours of some old MMORPG that is probably dead now. 24 hour double XP events and a great deal of spare time is a terrible combo.

Played NES Metal Gear 8 hours straight trying to beat it as a kid without much info. Got little over half-way through before I had to call it quits.

Pulled a 12-hour all nighter with a friend playing the SNES port of NBA Jam TE. I still have the cart with my 36-0 record and the all-star team replacing rookies. To the full extent of the Jam motherfucker.

>> No.5052456

Three times I played a games for more than 15 hours straight.

1. A friend of mine challenged me to beat all of the classic Mega Man games in one day, this was before 10 was released.

2. Same friend challenged me to beat each of the mainline Metal Gear games in one day.

3. Was challenged again to play through the entirety of Shadow of the Colossus in one sitting. This was my first, and only time I've played the game.

Once someone subs an episode, even very very poorly, it's extremely unlikely it'll get subbed again. So a bad sub basically kills the chance of a good sub coming out, meaning there is no waiting for high quality subs for that episode anymore.
If he'd just put out a softsub though it'd be fine, as with the timing and basic translation there it'd be trivial for someone competent to come along and finish it up. But a bad hardsub is worse than no sub at all, if you want a proper translation.

>> No.5071691

Yes, yes, blah blah blah
You make this argument every time. People are sick of waiting. You're not wrong, I agree with your sentiment, but it shows how poorly SA-GCCX have done at keeping up with demand -- people are totally willing to watch poor subs and they'll enjoy them gratefully because they just want to watch new episodes of the show they enjoy every once in a while.

Manga translations are a different beast altogether. Even if you know Japanese decently, you can't tell how good a translation is because the translator removed all the Japanese from the release. If you want to check, you need to locate a raw and sit there crossreferencing the two like an asshole.

This means it's pretty easy for any retard to just "translate" without really knowing the language and be fairly secure that he won't get called out. Can't do that with TV shows and movies, since the audio is right there.

Different ADs have different jobs on the show. The ADs who help during the game challenges can have some grueling obligations. They test out games beforehand pretty thoroughly to help decide what should be on the show and to find the trouble spots. They take notes during Arino's challenges and do a lot of the episode editing afterward. If Arino can't beat a game, an AD almost always finishes it to show the ending. It's like a training camp to see if the ADs have what it takes to work in TV.

Directors do pretty much what you would expect. They would help with planning, filming, editing, etc.

35-40 hours
The first time I played FF VI was two years ago the day before thanksgiving. I started playing around 1AM . Feels like fucking yesterday, where is time going.
Any way, I played it from start to finish, no guide, only took breaks to piss or get food to smuggle into my cave. Took about 40 hours or so, was hopped up on energy drinks. Emulator also crashed and I lost about 5 hours of progress. I even grabbed thanksgiving dinner and ate it while playing FF in my room

I can barely finish anything or start anything due to anhedonia. I'd been trying to play FFVI for years but it bored me, This time it finally clicked and I just enjoyed everything about it so much and was having such a great time, being genuinely happy that I didn't want it to end. After about 20 hours, I knew if I went to sleep, I would feel like depressed shit like usual when I woke up and not be able to ever finish it so I just said "fuck it" and took it on as a challenge to finish it in one sitting on my first playthrough

Felt so great that even after I finished it, it took me a couple hours to get to sleep

We don't have anything that provides HQ raws after broadcast in Japan, kind of like nyaa does for anime.

Yeah that shit pisses me off, it takes you right out of the moment. You hear the narrator say a noun that you're familiar with and then the subtitles rename it completely. So you have to take extra time matching up wtf the subtitles are talking about,
Popular nouns like "famicom" or game titles should just be left the fuck alone.

My intention was just to sub them back into my own language. It's all about accessibility. As a euro gamer, I'm always annoyed that they translated the Megadrive to Genesis. But that's the logic they're going with. You may know what Takahashi meijin no bouken jima is but I'm sure Adventure island is a more common name for the game.

Plus it always, always annoys me even more when a "translation" leaves japanese words and terms untranslated because "everyone knows them" or "you can't translate senpai". That's TV-Nihon level shit.

It was like one dude whining, and it was only because someone live posted a couple episodes with like 30 spoiler tag posts in a row instead of saving it up for maybe half a dozen posts. You can't say anything about the lack of translations for it without getting retards babbling about learning japanese or muh piracy (of a japanese tv show with 0 western presence). Threads are slow because everything is old news and there's little to discuss without new episode subs, unfortunately.
Sometimes I really wonder why no one else bothers to translate it aside from that one google translate tier guy who at least made an effort for the Tsubasa episode, hopefully no one is being held back by some autistic fansubber code of honor that prevents more than one group from working on it.

Shit like this always makes me laugh. As if there are hundreds of fan translators just lying around looking for something new to pick up.

We're talking about a fairly in-depth, long form show here, with lots of casual dialogue. Right off the bat, you can basically ignore about 95% of people working on translations right now, their skill level isn't actually high enough to deal with TV. Then, you take out all the people who aren't interested in the subject matter, and you're left with well under a percent. Then, you throw in the fact there's another group already doing it, and soaking up 99% of the potential E-peen? You're left with literally nobody.

It's not a "code of honor". It's "why the fuck would I work on something when nobody will suck my dick for it?"

You're lucky to even have the lazy retards on SA subbing this shit for you. Aside from GCCX, the only things that get subbed are dramas, idolshit, and Gaki. Ignorance is bliss, and if you knew about the other few dozen weekly shows out of Japan that are highly entertaining and unheard of in the west, you'd probably rather see them get subtitles anyway.

I agree.
The fansubbing "industry" is a revolving door that constantly takes in beginners and lets proficient people go.
As soon as you get good enough to do "real stuff" with your Japanese, there's no reason to stay in the scene.
I know about that firsthand.

I used to scanlate and fansub stuff when I was an N2 shitter. But when I got my N1 + degree and started working professionally it just started feeling like a waste, since when your work is worth €40+/h it's hard to do it not only for free, but while being berated for everything you do as well.

>>5106678
Mostly a waste of time.

I mean, if you have fun doing it then go for it, but it's one of those things you gotta be able to do while knowing you'll never get anything out of it.
No one in the scene is in the industry or has any links to it, nothing you do in fansubbing/scanlation will be of any use in your life.
Not only that, a traceable past in fanslation will directly hurt your chances with all Japanese companies, who will probably discard you on the sole basis that you probably helped those pesky pirates that cause trillions of (alledged) damages every year.

At the end of the day, even if you slave away for free for a decade you will get no recognition, no added skill (since almost no manga or anime even counts as practice past a certain point), and a permanent black mark on your resume if you don't cover your tracks.

I recommend fansubbing only if you have absolutely no intention of ever having relations with Japan or any job related to using the language.

You can draw your own conclusions about what it means about GCCX and its fans though. Maybe the show attracts an especially indolent lazy useless breed of weebs who either can't or won't do it. I can't think of a single weekly show that gets subs within a few hours, but I don't watch idolshit so maybe one of those spergs really does spend all their free time on that crap.

For every show that gets subtitled, there are easily a dozen that don't. I remember people whining about Tokyo Encounter subs for years, and the only person doing them was a retard on livejournal or something who had a 2nd grade level understanding of both English and Japanese.

There's a couple shows with giant fanbases that get super quick "run captions through Google Translate and touch them up a bit" shitsubs a few hours after they air by ESL Youtubers that want the views, but that's not a good thing.

English requires a completely different set of skills compared to Japanese.
Learning English through books is useless because common use exceptions are way more common than the rule, and every single instance of spelling and pronunciation is a standalone thing that you'll only know if you've seen it before.
So you end up just watching movies and playing games until it just clicks.

Japanese is much more structured, with a more or less unchanging set of rules and rigid grammar forms.
You can go through a chapter of grammar and know that you've objectively improved just from that.
Plus, my mother tongue is pronounced exactly as written and with pitch differentiation, just like Japanese, so I already start with the advantage of having native pronunciation skills from the get-go.
>You'll only finally get moderately competent at it by the time you're 50.

It's kind of bugging me watching the first part now, when he gets a hint from a person the subtitles just use the english version's hint, even when games like Zelda 2 are infamous for using stilted and truncated clues that might not even apply.

>> No.5115571

>>5115558
Yeah. It's not so much that the English version is mistranslated, but a lot of the hints got chopped down so much in order to fit into the text boxes that they end up giving less information and thus end up less useful than the actual hints Arino is reading.

>> No.5115593

>>5115571
That hint above is a good example. "The island" is vague, there's lots of islands and at the point you read this hint you'd probably think of the island with the Sea Palace before anything else. Maze Island is so big people probably wouldn't even think of it as an island.
But the woman originally said "Maze Island", and just like Arino, everyone reaching that maze-like place would immediately get that this is the Maze Island she mentioned and know that's where the kid is.

You stupid retard, 迷路島 is literally "Maze Island." The subtitles didn't add anything to what Arino said -- did it ever occur to your chimp brain that maybe he had played the game and had some recollection or prior knowledge of it?

>> No.5115679

>>5115669
If you actually knew as much Japanese as you're clearly pretending to do, you'd know that 迷路島 is written メイロジマ in katakana, and that that name is clearly present in the text box in the first screenshot despite the subtitles not saying "Maze Island" anywhere. Arino is also looking at the whiteboard when he says "So this is Maze Island", because he wrote down this clue. That's where he got the name from, not from any prior knowledge.

Stop embarrassing yourself now.

That was literally the point of the screenshots, anon. According to the subtitles, Arino just magically picked up the name Maze Island from nowhere and knew this was "the island" the child was on. That's not what actually happened.
