They put screen caps of this message "winners don't do drugs" on the machines. Apparently politicians thought that arcades were a hang out for bad kids and drug dealers, was that true? Arcades were slightly before my time, what were some stories you had going to some?

>> No.5112293

Well I can tell you this much. Anyone with his initials in the top 3 was on at least speed at the time of WINNING.

So Sessions can go eat a dick. What a winner he was.

Yeah, totally. There wasn't a push from Nancy Reagan to keep kids off drugs that was well documented and explained thoroughly. Nope. The idea was kids were going to arcades to spread AIDS and shoot heroin.

Literally 3 seconds on Google would have saved you the embarrassment. Arcades could be shady but in general they were places where kids went for a while at the mall while parents shopped. It's not like they weren't monitored or down dark alleys.

We had a big, clean arcade in our 80's shopping mall, but there was also one in the bad part of town that I wasn't allowed to go to after dark, especially on weekends. My only negative experience ever was playing my first 2 token game, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and a bigger kid came and pushed my out of my way.

Memes aside my heroin dealer used to always have you meet him at the arcade....dont know why. Well it was in the mall but he'd have you walk into the arcade and play a game of Star wars where youd leave the money under the seat and then go play something else and hed play a game and then youd play another one and get your drugs.

Im clean for 15 years though.

That, DARE, and all the after school specials made me actually want to try drugs. All these people telling me not to do something got me wondering what the big deal was.

It's not that the arcades were shady but that they were popular youngsters' hangout, so drug dealers could attract many new teenage customers.

Of course it depends on the arcade stores: You wouldn't meet this shit in family-friendly arcades but in arcades where only teenagers and adults are allowed.

Dimly lit turf with a lot of foot traffic and cash-in-hand is drug dealer heaven. Lots of games for drug-addled youth to enjoy their "high." Blowjobs in the men's room. Arcades were fucking shady.

>How seedy were arcades back in the day?
Some were, some weren't. It depended on the area and the owners rather than anything inherent to arcades. It's like asking if every bowling alley, skating rink, park, etc is seedy.
Also anti-drug campaigning was targeting youth _everywhere_. You still get to see it so prominently in retro arcade games today because it was baked into the ROMs you're now running through MAME.

>> No.5114998

My arcade was in a bowling alley that also had a bar.

Seedy would be an upgrade.

I had the same question so I asked people who are like 50 now what it was really like and they all agree it was a bad place for kids and most of them were basically where you got your dope.

Gaming was tough back then.
Kids nowadays grow up sheltered with their online games and their lastest most tech advanced games in their laptops and tablets, but fuck it, back then you had to go to the arcade (a highly social place, I'd compare it to techno clubs, it almost was, with all these lights and sounds), you'd put a few quarters, all your week savings, and try to get fucking good at your fav game, then some older kids would come up and laugh at how badly you did. Then they'd move you over with your last credit and show you how it's done. You'd be pissed but then you'd learn from sempaitachi, and you'd admire them. Over time you'd get gud, and they'd recognize it, and they'd let you in their group as the little kid who goes around asking for spare change to other people so they can play more, and you can watch more. Then for the first time they give you a joint, loll.
There were girls at arcades too, I lost my virg at 14 with a 17 year old stoner girl who always played DDR and KOF.
South america rocks.

DARE did that on a lot of people, actually.

I watched this a lot as a kid which kept me away from drugs because I liked these characters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hz1UaEVyoo

I was pretty impressionable as were most kids and I never forgot the part at 15:38. Because it was so fucked up and everything Kermit said was right. DARE just went kind of over the top.

most were clean enough. nothing super-illicit. worst thing i'd ever seen was people being drunk and fist-fights in the street. nothing special.
