Check this parrot out lol

Retrobrite is a combination of bleaching agents and a thickener to keep it on the surface and thick enough not to streak. It's not a corrosive. It's not a completely inaccurate claim that it weakens the plastic but only fractionally and only a few micrometers deep that it penetrates. Sure the oxidation can come back and will likely come back faster but it can be re-treated or re-sealed after the initial treatment or even just polished.

I don't understand the amount of alarmists inundating this hobby. I suspect they're the same people who will angrily claim emulation is identical to real hardware that they "coincidentally" can't afford.

Yeah, real basic, but apparently still beyond you. To be fair, I expected an answer like this after you got done pounding on Google for a second time and coming back with nothing. "Retrobrite", chemically speaking, removes bromine (in the case of retro electronics, used as a fire retardant) from (most) ABS plastics through oxidation. Nothing more. This process is usually done via H2O2 and TAED. Please explain how this process affects the molecular integrity of ABS plastics. Use as many big boy words as you feel are necessary. Should be fairly simple. Basic fucking chemistry, and all.

>If it's not corrosive then you wouldn't need to wear gloves while handling it.
You don't. One of hydrogen peroxide's chief uses is as a topical antiseptic. You'd have to have a pretty strong concentration to run into any real problems outside of possible mild irritation. Certainly not the stuff you're buying at the local drug store to treat a skinned knee or whip up a batch of retrobrite.

You can use google to verify. The plastic WILL turn yellow again. The chemical compounds (bromine) still exist in the plastic. They will yellow again. All the "retrobrite" does is oxidize and remove the visible layer of yellow plastic where the break down from UV light has happened. Unless you chemically remove the bromine (impossible) it is only a temporary fix, and does weaken the plastic a bit.

>> No.5110749

>>5110726
It's EITHER temporary, or it weakens the plastic, can't be both. If it's affecting the entire plastic structure then there won't be bromine lurking just underneath, and if there is then it's because the cleaning process has only affected the surface layer. My understanding is the latter is true - you only clean the surface, the plastic underneath is unaffected, and the surface will re-yellow in a few years.

>> No.5110754

>>5110749
>only affected the surface
If you remove or oxidize the top few microns of plastic, you are destroying the structural integrity. It is minimal, and imperceptible, but it is still destroying the top layer of plastic. The oxidization process destroys things. Rust is oxidization. It weakens metals. It is not just removing the color, it is destroying the top layer. It may be minor, but it is still weakening it.

Try cleaning your clear coat of your car with retro brite, and in a few years your clear coat will be peeling off in places. It weakens it because it damages it. Thinner plastics will be more noticeable.

I have read quite a bit about retrobrite and it being a temporary solution. If the color bothers you so much, one suggestion I read about was to disassemble the unit and paint the original color. A quality spray paint will not yellow as fast as bromide plastic. It is simply easier to let it alone.

https://www.classic-computers.org.nz/blog/2013-01-15-retr0bright-only-temporary.htm

The original damage from light causes degraded or free bromides throughout the case from the fire retardants. Retr0Bright only takes these away from the surface layer. However these bromides can migrate fairly freely through the polymer. They don't need light to do this. Migration is probably accelerated in hot conditions. These pre-existing bromines from the original damage migrate to the top and within a few years the surface is yellowed again. The rate of the regression depends on the inital extent of yellowing (the more yellowed, the more bromides down deep), heat exposure and the nature/quality of the plastics.

Our experiments showed that it is not recommended to use RetrObright or Hydrogen Peroxide on the types of plastic we studied. As you can see photos taken through the microscope, both products caused an etching of the surface, which was also visible to the naked eye. After purification with hydrogen peroxide on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a clear cracking could be seen in the area where the solution was applied. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), on the other hand, became food and the photograph shows how the soap-like gel has eaten a bubble-like pattern in the surface of the material.

If Retrobright indeed works by solving down the yellowed part of the plastic, then it would make sense that it makes the plastic weaker, since it is essentially removing a thin layer. It's like when you resurface a scratched disc, you do it by peeling down a damaged layer - but it means you have less material remaining.

And it's completely worthless, since the cause of the issue (the bromine) is still in there, still reacts with the plastic, and yellows it back again.

I'm only hoping that enough interest is done in retro hardware so new parts can be manufactured as replacements. I know that there's a project to make new C64 keycaps, for example. But less popular hardware may never get that treatment.
