"PS-X" was the code name for Sony's console that everyone knew was the same Play Station that had been announced as the SNES CD attachment years earlier but Sony was sort of testing the waters to see if Nintendo would challenge their rights to the name before they officially announced and might have possibly been forced to retract. Then further, 90s Westerners tested so much more favorably to the letter X than the word "play" that SCA actually tried to continue the association for as long as possible.

Is that the same wikipedia page that reports that the internal designation was PSX, and that it was called that prior to the adoption of "PlayStation"?

The point I was going for was that I was alive and do remember the hype leading up to it. It was the Nintendo Play station. After the NES/Sony deal fell out, sony worked internally off and on on the project.

Sorry, I misunderstood you in my previous post. I know how contentious of an issue this is with the younger audience, and I confused this statement with this web page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_(console)#cite_note-28

Which also lists the internal and advertised name of the product as PSX.

Pic related.

I think the difference between people who call it PSX and the people who sperg out over it is that the younger audience who was not alive knows PS1 or simply as "PlayStation" because they could compare it to the followup models PlayStation 2 and The 3rd one. I was living on my own when this hype was happening. I remember the advertisements and it was going to be called "PSX" . It wasn't huge, but people in the know found out about it, and the simple term stuck.

I made a better screenshot of the old article from here:
http://www.edge-online.com/features/making-playstation?page=5

From the way it looks, PSX was something that was intended for US markets. This may explain part of it.

So I would ask anyone who is offended by this designation:

>Are you from the USA?
>Were you alive when the PlayStation was being hyped?

I now think that PSX is the term used by us Xoomers that were in the middle of being awestruck by 32 bit CD quality games, something that was not really mainstream in the USA until Sony made that happen.

I always assumed that was Nintendo's (pre-Wii) insistence on always having their name tied with the name of each console. Can't just be GC for Gamecube. Gotta have an N in there too. And couldn't do NGC because Neo Geo Pocket Color or something like that.

And even then calling it PSX is like referring to the gamecube as DOL/Dolphin.

>> No.5102901

>>5102892
>It's pronounced PS2CES if you're going to insist on SNES
I understand your confusion.

Let me explain. When we were alive in the early 80s, we didn't have trolls on the internet to correct us to their version of reality. When we were watching the development of the "famicom" we were looking at a name change for the markets outside of Japan. The name "Nintendo Entertainment System" was the designation that we became familiar with. Hence the abbreviation "NES". The sequel Became the "SNES"

This brings me to answer your question.

The PSX was the internal name and was the intended name of the system for North American audiences. (This is well documented) It was called "PSX" in the USA, in print and across the globe in many places. SCEI did not care for this, and likened it to the Walkman. So, the update was called "PsONE", so when they finally came out with the next generation system, it only made sense to simply call it "Ps2".

It is not about comparison between unlike systems, but as an evolution of a series and the name system stuck. Everyone I know called them exactly what I said earlier. You don't have to like it, but I respect that you and your circle of friends did not. Roughly how old are you? I am in my mid 40s, and I do think that these systems being new things in my time is what created the name system myself and my peers called it.

>No one I know pronounced the "eks" during real life conversations.
Fixed it for you.

Myself and my circle of about a dozen friends all called it that. You don't have to like it, and you can pretend that "No one ever did X thing" based on your limited perception, but you continue to beat on a dead horse. Eventually you will tire of it. I enjoy the moving goal posts that first "no one called it PSX", and now it is "No one pronounced it X way". Try not to get the salty tears into your retro electronics. It can cause shorts or failures.

I'd never thought I'd say that, but in this era of Soundcloud rap, I do miss it too.

No one ever pronounced the "eks" during real life conversations.
If you're too autistic to handle mild hypebole: Pronouncing the "eks" during real life conversation was rare. If no one called you out they were just being polite.

>Considering that Playstation is now a brand you should use PS1 or PSX to signify original Playstation games or consoles.
No, because nobody would say just Playstation if they meant 2,3 or 4. So Playstation remains free to denote the original Playstation. No need to add a 1 whatsoever.

>After all what would you call a Playstation in a room that also includes a Playstation 2, 3, and/or 4?
THE Playstation. Simple, elegant, timeless and true.

>also PS1 is perfectly legitimate considering the redesign of the system is known as the Playstation One.
No, because the PSone is a smaller and rounder re-release of the Playstation. It's also called the PSone... NOT FUCKING PS1. Underaged fags brought that on themselves when they sperged about PSX and claimed PS1 as correct. Sorry, fags but there can be no peace until you accept PSX into your life and PS1 just has no legitimacy whatsoever when you want to be a stickler about details. I never pointed that out and cared about it before fags came after the use of PSX by us older gents though.

>Also to weigh in on NES/SNES, in my locale it was en ee es or Nintendo for the original, Super Nintendo for the SNES. Now that Nintendo has more under its belt I just call it the original Nintendo.
EN EE ES and ES EN EE ES was rare but some people said it occasionally, mostly I always just heard and said Nintendo and Super Nintendo. What I've only ever heard fags in youtube videos on the internet say is ness and snezz though. I had never encountered that kind of craziness in the wild.
