PrBoom core in Retroarch, KGDoom and Chocolate Doom. They all have their plus and minus qualities.

As for battery problems that's only when installing the Linux Lakka retroarch emulators. It cause battery de-sync. Nothing like that happens for just normal homebrew.

I tried Q1 and 2 on Switch and they're good ports, how about Q3? There's a Duke3D one too and it's awesome, but the Chocolate Doom one suck because of the controls (kgDoom doesn't run on newer firmware and I haven't tried the libretro one yet)

Are you talking mods with fucktons of guns like Russian Overkill, or mods where there's limits and choices to make like DoomRLA?

In the vein of RO, there's the HXRTC Project, Aeons of Death, DoomZone and QuakeStyleZX (DoomZone is way better), and then garbage like Complex Doom and it's too numerous addons. I really, really like weaponwads with fucktons of weapons for some reason. I need to dig deeper and find the prime cut Zdoom wads where everyone just threw together wads with 100+ weapons. Fucking love that shit for some reason.

As for stuff with limits, Legendoom is another good choice. It's got a LOT of weapons but you can only ever carry one version of the same weapon.

I'd imagine Doom's Hell to be an amalgamation of hundreds, if not thousands of different worlds that Hell conquered over the aeons, with borders between worlds blurring, and dimensions merging together in bizzare ways. There are passages into many more worlds that demons have established presence in (like being summoned by locals), including numerous versions of Earth.
nuDoom2 Earth is but one of the many the DoomSlayer has visited.

Read the actual text from the game, it tells a different story. Also the third paragraph is often misinterpreted by illiterates. I personally feel the simplicity and style of the originals (1, Ultimate, 2, Final), as well as its overall technology, aesthetics and story, just go best themselves, along with .wads, any of them potentially fitting in after Doom 2 or either of Final Doom, kind of like branching paths.

Doom 4 I think fits much better as its own story, rather than trying to cram it in with the originals, which I think it's just way too tonally and stylistically different from.
It sort of fits some of the stylings of Doom 3, given the aesthetics and technology, but tonally (and of course, gameplay wise), they differ way too much.
It kind of fits with Doom 64 a bit, in how Doom 64 ends, but stylistically and tonally, it's still pretty different.

I think another aspect you could bring up is their personalities and actions.
One beats up his boss over orders for firing at innocent people, gets mad at his pet rabbit's death and chooses to stay in hell to make sure no demon would come out.
The other breaks UAC computers and uses their workers' detached body parts to enter certain areas but also likes cute toys and backs up an ai.
I think this is where the Doom 3 marine doesn't really count, because he doesn't do much aside from maybe killing his boss who turned into a tank with a BFG.
Meanwhile the RoE marine "accidently" kills a bunch of poor nobodies by touching a magic heart.
I guess people misreading the codex entries and making shit up is what happens when you try to inject "lore" into a series where the story was otherwise meant to be taken at face value, because the gameplay was put first.

There's no ADS and no headshot, so there's no incentive for slow camping and keeping enemies at a distance - you gotta get into the thick of it. Because of that, gameplay feels MORE fast paced than regular Doom, rather than painfully slow and 'realistic' like in regular BD.

The same with no executions, because they just incentivize the player to just camp around a corner and wait until enemies enter your melee range, which is something that I've done many times in regular BD because it's efficient, and it's the best way to score many fatalities in a row safely.

There's an old game designer saying "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game" and that appears to be the main problem with regular BD, that the mechanically best way to play it is the most boring way.

Finally, there's no edgy shit like childish one-liners or flies flying above corpses.

I genuinely had fun playing this on vanilla maps, which is not something I can say about regular Brutal. Is this what original Brutal Doom was like before Mark started adding everything and the kitchen sink?

So far the only real drawback is the fact that you can't tell how much ammo is in your weapon, but it's not that big of a deal.

I really haven't had this issue, for the most part. I finished Doom 1, DTWID, and half of Doom 2 on hideous without issue; even the crusher-- and that was before they had ladders in hideous.
Also just finished Needs More Detail with Hideous as well. The only issues I tend to run into are "speed rushes" to timed lifts, which require dumping all of your gear infront of said lift before spamming jump to dash back, and easily missed keys. On e1m8 of NMD, you pass over non-returnable teleports after getting blue and red keys. In base game, you definitely have the keys, but in hideous its easy to miss them because you need to +use them. In cases like this, I have no guilt in summon redkeycard or what have you.

1. Install Quake.
2. Create a folder called /ad in your quake folder, extrat the arcane dimensions archive there.
3. When the game loads, do what you did, write "game ad" in the console.

If you have any problems, it's probably because: a) you downloaded an older version of the mod, the current version is 1.70 http://www.simonoc.com/files/ad/ad_v1_70final.zip b) you installed quakespasm incorrectly, which is really fucking hard to do, considering you just have to copy all the files in your quake folder c) you use a wrong version of quake, which is rare but possible.

Let's say we have an empty area with some keycard in the middle, and as soon as player collects the keycard, a monster closet opens.

Now let's reimagine it for Hideous - let's make area big, and put sandbags as cover all around the keycard, and strewn with bodies of dead marines to make clear what is about to happen.
The moment player picks up the keycard, monster closets will open... and the player will be basically stuck in one location with decent cover, having to defend himself against a horde of monsters. Perhaps monsters could also come out in several waves.

ADS is useful if you make it situationally useful.
A quick and simple way is to make a rifle that fires in full-auto normally, with a small spread, but in ADS, it's semi-auto, you get a slight zoom, with very little, if any spread.
The damage per shot is the same (if it's an assault rifle, it should be something decent), but there's the occasional situation where the fine aiming has utility, even if most of the time you'll be bursting or magdumping.
At that, I think that most weapons can do without it, it should be a special feature for that individual gun.

I'm actually finishing up my Doom2 playthrough. I've already finished 1, TNT and fucking Plutonia (gave up and skipped 32).

I hate bleed and killer barrels so those are off, and generally had to be on the second or third difficulty, but it's all been a fun-as-hell blast. Early parts of TNT and Shores of Hell might've been my favorite. Beautiful mod, shit tons to do, way too fun, is the only other mod I can play for longer than an hour besides Smooth Doom.

Gameplay-wise it's kind of like Blood if every enemy was a cultist. Take cover and always crouch when in enemy view. Make your shots count, as with good aim most enemies can be one-shotted by a rifle, or pistol at less range. It really makes you feel like you're in a shootout when you're crouching behind cover, peaking out only to shoot at the guy doing the same thing, knowing he could kill you if his reaction time is better.

Thing about bleed is that I feel as if its too forgiving. With armor (especially powerup armor) reducing bleed chance so drastically, its practically a non-issue. This is only amplified by soulsphere/potions removing your need to use second flesh.

The problem more so, especially in newer patches, is permanent damage being rather extreme and second flesh being nerfed. I find that it never so much so has an effect on gameplay so much as it does time spent when I'm at a lull in a level and decide to grind through second flesh to get my health cap back up.

It shows off vertical amazingly. the atmosphere is layered greatly. Having a secret right away is very nice, though it can be missed. Both the nail gun and super shotgun are in the level. One being trapped and makes you assume that there would be no more weapons that level, but if you look hard you find the super shotgun, though I will admit I also missed the Supershotgun multiple times. Then you get to the ramps, with the complete darkness it builds tension, you have to be a tiny bit careful going down and shoot into the dark, plus the guy shooting overhead can make you panic a tiny bit. The snipers' nest is also a secret area that teaches you about minor parkouring and how to jump. then you just get to blast a few enemies well on the low ground, and climb the stairs to enter you first slipgate. Another thing to note is when you first get to the river is just breathtaking, actually seeing the outside and realizing that this game is different is great. Also minor looping paths make for great fun, exploring where you have already been with zero enemies and just letting you take in the entire map. God damn it is just breathless. I recommend playing it and really understanding it. Think about how they utilized the lighting and water.

It may come as a surprise to you that /vr/ is not one person.
That said, I am a bit surprised too at how polarizing Strife is. I think it's honestly really good and really interesting, and I figured it'd be at least appreciated as a forward thinking approach to Doom. I can only assume that most people who don't like it had a similar experience to my first few times playing - they assumed Strife was the "Deus Doom" immersive sim that it makes itself out to be and got frustrated when it seemed that every encounter ended in a straight shootout, and figured it was just incoherent. The truth is that Strife was really ambitious, but they couldn't keep that ambition up through the full game, and it was probably too much for what the engine could actually do.
It wanted to have multiple approaches to completing objectives, and it does to some degree; the most obvious example being destroying the power crystal, where you can either shoot your way through or stealth through the river caves to the crystal. But once an alarm goes off, it's your typical shooter, and the later game is basically a series of shootouts. There's multiple plot paths and endings, but there isn't really anything emergent like the infamous "killing Anna in the plane" in DX and it's mostly just "which boss do you fight," "did you actually kill the final boss," and dialogue differences. There's character progression, but it's just talking to a shopkeep and getting a health boost or some unknown "accuracy" bonus.
In the end, Strife is best understood as a kind of "Doom Plus" - fundamentally still a run'n'gun retro FPS, but with certain immersive sim elements that add some more flavor to the pot. Once I fully understood that, it became a lot more fun to me.
Veteran Edition's additions deepen those RPG-like flavors and I think help bring Strife closer to what it could have been, but it's still a shooter that's just a tad bigger than its britches.

There's no source ports for it as far as I'm aware. It works fine on my win10 computer. It uses Dosbox. Pretty fun game imo.
