does anyone else here unironically think that the n64 was garbage? i never owned one, but played hundreds of hours on it at friends, so this pretty much says it all. i cant even give objective arguments, i mean okay, the hardware was good, the game library was OK. but the general feel of it is very nihilistic and empty. things like donkey kong are the best example. all these bright colors cant hide the fact that's its made hollow and quite eerie. i had a PSX back then, didnt hve this feeling. i had a 486 and never have this feeling. i had DC, PS2, GC and never have this feeling. n64 is scary.

I don't know what you are talking about, you sound like you have psychological issues.

"Nihilistic and empty" but you don't have this feeling with other consoles or the PC... sure not a troll post at all.

Meh, not my cup of tea honestly but there's still games that I enjoy a lot like Starfox, Mario 64 or Sin and Punishment.

The system is probably amazing if you're into western shooters, racing games and Banjo clones so I get why some people like it so much.

It is garbage and a collosal fuckup for the big N. However, feelings of eeriness are a plus for me. Something about the textures and fog makes some games a little spooky

>> No.5094473

I agree with you about it not being a great console, and can kind of see what you mean about it being creepy or off a bit. I think thay might come from the transitional phase of Gen 5 consoles. The difference between psx and n64 being that, for the most part, Playstation games usually tried to render human figures with realistic proportions and characteristics. Most of the n64 games seem to have animal, cartoon, or exaggerated characters in cartoonish settings. Not only have the n64 graphics and stlye aged poorly, it puts off a weird vibe, like an old carnival or amusement park.

>> No.5094474

I think I actually know what you mean OP, it's because of the overly filtered and fuzzy graphics and general low polygon count of (especially earlier) games on the system, they often have a weird crude yet dreamlike feel that's a little eerie. Prime example is probably the Zelda games.

I remember the massive hype the gaming press made about the soon to be released ultra 64. When i saw my first ultra 64 game in the form of killer instinct i left the arcade laughing. When i saw the first commercially released n64 i felt depressed and happy at the same time. Depressed because they LIED to us. Happy because i didnt buy one.

But you guys go do jesus work and keep the hype alive.

Garbage is overly-harsh, but in general I'd say that the first few generations of 3D polygon games aged incredibly poorly, whereas sprite-based games still look pleasing. The only ones that still look alright to me are the ones with pre-rendered backgrounds, e.g. Final Fantasy 7.

Nice try saturnfag, regular people will never respect your console.

It absolutely requires a cocktail of nostalgia and hindsight to consider the n64 "good" as a console

Yes there are some good first and second party games and even some third party games that I originally dismissed but when carefully and deeply examined are decent

However, the cartridge media was a tremendous tremendous mistake. People paid 30%-60% more money for 10%-40% of the content.

Says you, fuckwad. Quads does NOT inherently= bad 3D graphics. Also, Sega should have had VDP 1 removed during development of the console, as VDP1 was definitely not that good. In addition, your precious N64 had not only a somewhat awkward default controller, but also no dedicated sound chip!

>> No.5095179

>>5095150
Ahahaha, knew it. No sound chip was a brave design choice slashing the cost of the hardware while still allowing for a almost 0.1ghz console in 1996. It was easy for the reality coprocessor to produce CD quality sound, if they really wanted to developers could divert this CPU speed to the main game instead.

I agree, Sega had no idea what they were doing in hardware or software at that stage.

Same shit with other threads about thrashing consoles.

>> No.5095260

The N64 started the "new Nintendo" legacy of being the console with great first-party titles and little else. I associated Megaman, Contra and Final Fantasy with Nintendo just as much as I did Mario growing up and the lack of a good title from any of these franchises on the console made it second place in my eyes.

It was meant to be a child's toy. Try playing with pic related and see how mentally stimulated you are as an adult. I'm not saying N64 is a bad system, but this is the point where they embraced what they actually were.

Only relatively as I think was easily one of the worst consoles hardware and game librarywise released by Nintendo. While the console itself was extremely powerful with an excellent AA solution for its time, it was also held back by a subpar controller and a medium that would jinx Nintendo third party support for decades. It is by no means a bad console, but I wouldn't say it's better than anything before the Wii U.

>> No.5095337

Garbage? No. Was it better than the ps1? No, not by a long shot.

The library just wasn't that good. The few good games just didn't make up for all the really awesome shit on ps1. Only thing the N64 had going for it was 4 person multiplayer.

That said it's 2018, you don't need to choose which one you own and instead own and enjoy both.

Sorry but the only way to appreciate the N64 is either through the eyes of an innocent child who's parents bought them the Mario games OR through the lens of hindsight with every game fully deconstructed on the internet and of course, free.

To anyone at the time trying to wring serious gaming out of the thing, the constant stream of falsely aggrandized $69.99 shovelware was a nightmare.

As a PS1 fag I love the eerieness of N64. That's pretty much when Nintendo had any soul whatsoever. They will never have the balls to put in scary shit in a Mario game ever again. For once it wasn't a babby kid's game but a game for everyone in general.

EGM and several other periodicals existed at the time. This allowed you to know which games warranted purchasing. Even if you were illiterate and lived in a cave, games were available to rent then, from places such as blockbuster. Even if this didn’t protect you, used game stores allowed you to buy games at much lower prices. I owned one at the time, and the most I ever spent on a game was $59.99 for Zelda the day it came out.
With you being an advocate of the PlayStation, I find it humorous that you choose to ignore the shovelware problem on that system which was arguably worse if not objectively worse on the psx.

Personally I think N64 and Saturn have more interesting libraries than PS1. PS1 has a good library but I find myself going back to Saturn and n64 more. I guess it's the exclusive titles.

>> No.5098148

I own one, 4 controllers, and about 30 games that I didn't loan out (used to buy them used from the chink shop at local flea market). I spent a good amount on it, but only because it's what I was stuck with. It had some good games, and yeah OK it was perhaps the best FPS experience of its day, but overall I can't help but think it's a failed system compared to its contemporaries.

No fucking RPGs! Quest 64 doesn't count. Who the hell thought this was a great idea after what buttered their bread on the SNES? And yeah compared to what could have been (SNES CD addon) it is pretty shit. It is indeed a hollow experience compared to gaming on the PS1 because storage constraints. Sony had full CD quality music AND way more space for game data. Simple math there. N64 is baby's first polygons and that's it: the console.

I should have just waited a bit and bought the damn Playstation, but got one later. Also, pretty sure many people that "love the N64" are try-hard wannabe-nerd Big Bang Theory fans with an obvious underdeveloped sense of taste in anything. I'll dig it out of the garage and sell it to one of them some day.

Coming off the heels of the SNES, the objectively God-tier and best console of all time (so far), the N64 cann't be seen as anything but a failure and half-assed effort to recoup after fucking themselves out of teaming with Sony and establishing a literal unbeatable dynasty of consoles and games. Sony only went their own way because Nintendo fucked them at the last minute, and Sony went full samurai and made the Playstation. Sony took the throne and Nintendo never really recovered, forced to take a back seat and cater to a niche: tweens and manchildren.

>> No.5098279

>No fucking RPGs!
Paper Mario was the best RPG of that console generation. It had actual gameplay instead of just menuing like PS1 RPGs.

>> No.5098282

I don't like it at all, but its not for objective reasons; its aesthetics ( the smeary textures look gross) plus bitterness because my favorite system is Sega Saturn and everybody bought N64 instead.
