Artistic vision my ass, those NES games were probably all done by tired, underpaid salarymen who were constantly thinking about the sweet sweet soapland gals they would rub their ding dongs on after that shitty game finally ships and they get their peanut bonuses.

If I'd go back in the 80's and show them triplebuffer, bilinear and vsync they'd cry tears of pure joy and say "That's it! That's what we wanted it to look like! The future is amazing!"

I'm respecting the artist much more than you literal aspergers autist by finally after all these years seeing what they trully envisioned without hardware chains.

You love plastic shit, you love holding it in your hands and hording it on your shelves like trophy so you can brag about your gamer cred online, it's fine, but for the last time it's not better.

We still have hardware chains. There will always be limitations in the scope of any game due to hardware, console or PC. Artists have always known this and have always worked the best they can within the limits of their medium.

So yes, testing their work on a CRT to see if it looks good was exactly their artistic vision.

Preferrably without the "tube emulation" and "scanlines"

I think a question we should ask ourselves is if hypothetically when these consoles that output low resolution graphics were popular we imagine that screen technology had somehow advanced faster, and people were playing these games on displays with sharp pixels such as the lcds pf today, would that have really changed everything, or would people remember retro games to look like tbe left image in the OP pic??

>show the games crisply, clearly and beautifully
The crisp pixels were a result of hardware limitations. Nobody choose pixels, they were just what hard to be used. So fetishizing the sharp and crisp pixel look is some cargo cult shit.

>I'm just glad I don't have to use crts any more
For the wrong reasons no doubt. CRTs are bulky, create lots of static and when they start to flicker can give you headache. The image they create is a thing of beauty and wonder though. The way a CRT distorts and changes the crisp and clean pixels into something much better looking is indeed a happy accident. Bobby would be proud.

The edges are smoothed just enough to make things seem a bit more real while they aren't distorted so much that anything is lost (assuming you don't use RF). At the same time the flat and monotone surfaces are given a bit of texture which adds something to make it look more real and less artificial. If you want to clean up a pixelated image in photoshop, you use a bit of gaussian blur and the end result will look better. Movies that are shot digitally often look sterile and flat. Adding a little bit of noise, as long as it is moderate and evenly spread, can drastically improve an image.

As a kid I used to wonder why console and arcade games looked so much better than games on the home computer. Even if the graphics were the same they still looked so much worse on the computers. Only much later did I learn that it was because they had much higher resolution than TV screens and no visible scan lines. Objectively they create a "better" picture in technical terms but artistically it was the happy accidents that made pixelated sprite graphics really beautiful.

>> No.5099852

Any pixelated sprite game will look much better with a small amount of blur and some light scan lines, even new indieshit would look so much better with them added. The argument over what "the developers intended" is very retarded though because in most cases it does not matter. Games that were intended for home computers and were intended to look super crisp, will still look better with some happy accidents added. Some console devs definitely started using dithering with the understanding and anticipation that it will get blurred though and have said as much in interviews, noting that the game will not look right if you play it on a modern high definition flatscreen.

The only people who can not understand this are nu-male pixel fetishists, nostalgia blinded manchildren and turbo-autists who sperg out at the idea of image distortion being a positive.

this

If you're emulating 8/16-bit pixel based games on a large screen 32-60" you always need some scanlines effect or it'll look like shit... how far you go with that is a personal choice so the argument about the artists original vision seems like a waste of time!

I've found certain 32-bit polygon based games look much better unfiltered (eg. Bloody Roar 2 on PS1) while others look a complete jaggedy mess without CRT shaders (eg. Nightmare Creatures on PS1) so I'm still undecided on those.

Personally I'm not a fan of any of the smoothing effect filters but I can see why zoomers might use them to make some old RPGs look more asthetic to thier tastes, reckon it makes them look more like a mobile/tablet game though.

No shit. Pixels were how the graphics were constructed to but to say that they didnt plan for the way they'd look on a CRT is to call them idiots.
Pixels were glowy points on a screen. Many effects absolutely depended for those points to bloom and bleed into each other. There are times, especially in NES games, where the graphics are actually harder to discern when looking at the raw pixel art.
Examples like Ninja Gaiden and Master Blaster are useful to show that the pixel art was counting on the quirks of the display to provide more color depth

Some (not all) games did make use of CRT limitations to create certain effects and colors, this is true. But what is ALSO true, and many people forget, is that back in the day people were trying to make CRTs as clear and crisp as possible. The TVs that were seen as the best were the ones with no curve which limited the appearance scanlines and blur as much as possible, so it's retarded when people here insist on curved CRTs with less clarity being the best option. The only reason anyone thinks that is it looks like they remember from when they were kids, but they're not remembering all the advances that happened in CRTs and that the ultimate goal would be for them to look like LCDs. The whole reason LCDs took over is that they offered the most crisp and clear image (in addition to being a fraction of the weight and size of CRTs).

tl;dr - Hardware purists are fueled by nostalgia rather than trying to achieve the end goals of quality that people in the 80's and 90's were actually striving for.

i completely agree and this should be 101 kinda stuff, they created the sprites with the effects of a CRT in mind as you state bloom and bleed, because that was the medium.. it is same "art" process in any other medium, like painting fresco on wet plaster, or understanding the translucence of marble... once you understand your medium fully you can create masterpieces for the eye.

they fully understood what they were doing within the confines of the medium at the time and exploited and utilised the potential effects available.. devs and artists have already claimed as much

The issue I have is that all the scanline filters I've tried never look right. They usually just paint black lines over the image and it just makes the image too dark and muddy, The brightness/contrast/saturation/etc on a real game on a CRT were properly tuned WITH the scanlines there, not with the scanlines added after the fact.

That and the scanline filters just look inauthentic because they don't match the look of CRT phosphors, where you see little vertical "slots" across each line. Maybe there are filters for 4K screens that can accurately model this

Also I find scanlines to be extremely helpful with that 5th gen early 3D stuff. On an emulator it looks disgusting like shuffling pixels. But on a CRT the scanlines hide the aliasing and make it look really good.

Okay so, serious post ahead. You're right that scanline filters for LCDs are retarded because they'll never actually recreate scanlines, just add black bars. So speaking of "4K" is also fucking retarded despite everyone doing it, because it makes no mention of the size of the screen. What's important is of course DPI/PPI, and 4K at 24" has double the PPI of a standard 1080p 24" screen, roughly ~200ppi. At 200ppi a scanline filter stops being fucking retarded and becomes a reasonable albeit shitty simulation. Honestly, until we have microLED based 8K 24" screens we won't be able to simulate CRTs properly. Before people think "what the fuck, 8K!?" we already have OLED screens with around ~400ppi, we just dont/cant make them 24" yet without being absurdly expensive. We also can't make microLED screens yet but when we do they will produce real, proper blacks like a CRT or OLED, vibrant colors, and won't suffer all the foibles of OLEDs like burn-in.

In my case it is nostalgia. Playing without filters looks odd, even though that is as pure as the game actually looks like, artistic intention or not.

I just use scanlines because it's easier on my eyes. Is that so wrong?

If adding black bars to your image makes it easier on your eyes, perhaps you just need to reduce your monitors brightness by ~25%.

INSEPT L'OIN?
ok.

Seriously, all "highquality sprite resize" filters are shit. You can't add proper detail in an inteligent manner without additional graphical data (which filter lacks). For now all it does, it takes details away.
Improving old sprite/texturework without human input (i.e. redrawing sprites) would be impossible until we teach software to properly recognise context of the visuals with at least 95% accuracy. Google Deepdream is the current state of that affair so you can see how far we are from achieving that goal yet.
Bilinear filter is no exception, it does not work well with single-pixel dot detailing that was used prominently in many games, so it leads to detail loss as well.

Anyway, is there a filter/sahader/whatever that can properly emulate composite-specific effects (like color blending of nearby pixels in a line) that does so with absolute minimal blurring? While I do hate the blur, I'd like to see those effects in action.

the blur is an integral part of the effect. also retroarch is stupid, why does it capture the fucking screenshot message

Some composite-like filters do that ith varying degree of blurriness applied. I've seen screenshots, but there were no names given.

Blurring is literally mixing colors. The type of blur is the algorithm by which colors are mixed (kernel size, num passes, strength, etc).

Unless your game is sub-30 fps, some of the half frames have a different information from previous ones, and are presented at a different place on screen from the darkening remains of previous image. You can't show the result of that process along multiple consecutive frames in a static picture.

there are different kinds of blur
on a decent CRT composite would have about 20-25% of horizontal blur
Some composite filters go with 50% horizontal blur
Many filters add vertical (or rather radial) blur which didnt happen on a well calibrated CRT.
