while i do love symphony of the night, it isn't flawless.

The only flaw i could think of is how easy the game is. Tons and tons and tons of items and you almost never use any of them because there is no need.
Give enemies more damage, that way i would focus on reducing the damage they do to me, evade, and think on a strategy.

No game is flawless. But I think even a masterpiece can still have obvious flaws. Games are so much more than the sum of their parts and anyone can pick out the weakest aspect of the greatest game ever made and find a game that does that particular thing better. A masterpiece to me is just a prime example of the genre or medium as a whole.
For me:
>Super Mario Bros. 3
>A Link to the Past
>System Shock
>DOOM
>Duke Nukem 3D
>Blood
>Fallout
>Deus Ex
>Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
None of them are perfect but they're the games that illustrate everything I love about video games.

SotN is more "fun as fuck, but very deeply flawed"

It's not a popular opinion these days, but fuck you, here it is:

>it's way too easy. Like, sleeping with a hooker easy. Like, fucking beating a blind, retarded ape with no hands at scrabble easy.
>you only actually need 3 upgrades, and can then freely roam the castle with no restrictions. Making any exploration mostly optional.
>there's tons of unique, but totally pointless equipment. Making use of 90% of the shit the game offers is either a chore or pointless because it's either useful in only a handful of areas, or it's functional use is negligable (neat weapons that do chip damage)
>familliars are fucking stupid and almost totally useless in all but maybe 2 versions of the game.
>any boss can be cheased to death with easy tricks in literal seconds, without using the shield rod. And even without cheap tricks, most of them barely offer any challenge normally.
>some areas in the game are totally pointless, as nothing of use is kept within them.

I mean, it's an amazingly fun game, but it's flawed from top to bottom. It's fun despite it's many flaws.

And before anyone freaks and or rages, SotN is in my top 20 best of all time list, and I enjoy the shit out of it. I just get annoyed when people pretend a game being fun is the same thing as it being a masterwork of unparalelled quality.

Super Metroid does everything better than SotN. Play them both, and tell me SotN is flawless.

>it's way too easy. Like, sleeping with a hooker easy. Like, fucking beating a blind, retarded ape with no hands at scrabble easy.
This is never a problem except when it comes to Castlevania. Jrpgs are easy, Zelda is easy, guess why these games are well remembered now.
>you only actually need 3 upgrades, and can then freely roam the castle with no restrictions. Making any exploration mostly optional.
Which only matters if you read the walkthroughs. This is not something everybody does.
>there's tons of unique, but totally pointless equipment. Making use of 90% of the shit the game offers is either a chore or pointless because it's either useful in only a handful of areas, or it's functional use is negligable (neat weapons that do chip damage)
Could be a valid critique for Diablo or any roguelike, yet it doesn't make those games bad. I mean, it doesn't make the game worse, maybe it doesn't make it better.
>familliars are fucking stupid and almost totally useless in all but maybe 2 versions of the game.
Another nitpicking, it is cool to have them around you. That's enough to have them. Like the cloaks.
>any boss can be cheased to death with easy tricks in literal seconds, without using the shield rod. And even without cheap tricks, most of them barely offer any challenge normally.
And yet another "Now that I know how a magic trick is done, is shit" argument. Do not read walkthroughs then. Do you know this is an 'issue' for virtually any Castlevania? Watch some speedruns.
>some areas in the game are totally pointless, as nothing of use is kept within them.
Huh? Some areas are simple passways. Like every level in Super Mario Bros before reaching a castle.

For some reason however you did not mention the inverted castle.

So your entire set of counter points are calling valid complaints nitpicking?

And I didn't mention the second castle because it's a huge, empty waste of time where you gather 5 items, then go cheese the final boss to death.
You can grind, sure, but why bother? The entirety of the second castle was a low effort attempt to make the game longer and hide the true ending. It was a nice piece of post game, but it in no way makes the game as a whole better or worse for me. It's just more.of the same, and lumped in with the rest of it. I have all the sam3 complaints about the second castle as I do the first.

My new question is; how can you claim any of my arguments as nitpicking, when the things I bring up make up a huge chunk of the game?

And like it or not, I was able to cheese most bosses easily on my first few playthrough, no problem and without any guides. Yeah, I wasn't spamming b3st equipment, but I knew all thw spells (thanks to the shop), experimented and pushed their shit in.

I'll admit that finding everything for the first time was more enjoyable than the 50th time. But that's neither here nor there IMO. Because becomming familliar with the game only made certain aspects less enjoyable.
The combat never changes, the layout of the castle never changes and my arguments remain valid on your first and 100th playthrough.

And FYI, I'm one of those guys who ended up squeazing every last bit of enjoyment out of the game, wether by maxing out the map, farming best equipment, trying out every strategy available. Tried every item, fucked around with the shield rod and got my money's worth. Been playing it since 1997.

You can claim that my knowledge of the game is what ruined it for me all you want, but that in no way makes the game better. All that time just revealed to me how limited and how simple the game really is. I still like it, but I can like something and admit it's not a masterpiece.

Both Marias are trash and so is Richter. The game was made for Alucard and nobody else.

The only Metroidvania that did a decent alternate character mode was Dawn of Sorrow for the three-character party dynamic and being a "What If?" ending to the main story.

What are you talking about? 5 min isnt enough to even scratch the surface of the games mechanics, and it absolutely isnt enough to clear all the routes. The game gets better the more you play it, when swinging becomes second nature and the challenge shifts from merely clearing levels to doing it fast and smooth that's when the game truly shines.

how is the level design half assed? the game doesn't rely on clever level design. it focuses on combat, not puzzles or platforming. the levels are basically arenas where you can fuck around with the shitload of weapons the game constantly hands you.

Nice one anon, it's halfassed because it's empty corridors with no interesting geometry and copypasted encounter design. The game will literally spam the same enemy at you in the same kind of room over and over. That'd be ok if it was like a beat 'em up, but it isn't. The combat is garbage with passive enemies incapable of putting up a fight that can be cheesed in a huge number of ways. The game doesn't really have a focus besides exploration and getting new shit, it just throws a bunch of elements into a mix and hopes for the best.

It was fun, but deeply flawed.

All I'll say is my first couple plays were awesome, and once I memorized everything, I realized how simplistic the game really is. And the game seems to force you to level up as well, making grinding, not grinding (and using a level system entirely) pointless.

To elaborate, if you're under leveled, boss battles will generally put you where you need to be fairly quickly, without much extra effort.
And before someone draws an out of place Final Fantasy comparison, low and sometimea no level runs are possible in those games, so...

It's got lots of little issues that are head scratchers, but who gives a fuck about any of that? It's still fun anyway.

the first time i ever played i was having a decent time until that corridor in one of the areas (forget which) that is just the big 'maneater' plants and the weird crocodiles with chicks on the end of their tails over and over and over.... just really bland level design, and it didn't get any better.

The whole level-up system in SotN seems to be more of a crutch for non-action game fans to be able to overcome challenges than a well-designed leveling system. The sound and the flash when leveling is pretty satisfying even if it barely means anything though.
