Rayforce is really overrated within the shmups community.
The lock-on mechanic is awesome, sure, but the dodging in these games is just so unfun and straight up annoying.

Later Section/Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, and Soukyugurentai for Saturn are all good and not ridiculously expensive. I got Soukyugurentai for $40 a few years ago but it seems the price has gone up a bit unfortunately.

No wonder since it's one of the few games that work better on console than on MAME still, it has graphical glitches there. And it's a good one too.

Agreed on the second, probably the best made-for-console shmup or almost game I've played.
Sengoku Blade's regression in MAME that had been going for like half a year has been finally fixed in 0.202. Have you beat this game? I heard it's insanely hard, I still have to go for even a loop.

>> No.5079568

>>5079403
I've never one-credited Sengoku Blade, but I have played it extensively, and I believe I could one-credit it with a little time and effort. It is a difficult game, but it seems rather easy compared to other Psikyo shmups such as Cannon Spike, Zero Gunner 2, Dragon Blaze and Gunbird 2.

>> No.5079573 [DELETED]

>>5079568
I guess you mean the first loop only, have you checked the second?
Thing is, credit feeding in Psikyo games barely counts as practice since dying drastically decreases rank, thus you're dealing with much slower and less aggressive patterns that you'd have to deal with normally.

>> No.5079606

Saturn:
Battle Garegga
Batsugun
Gunbird
Darius Gaiden
Soukyugurentai
Shienryu
Blast Wind

Don't bother with the Playstation X, it's shit for arcade games.

I didn't know there was a second loop, although I'm not surprised since other Psykyo games games have them. Yeah, I never credit feed shmups unless, out of curiosity, I want to check out later levels to see how crazy the game will get.

>> No.5079803 [DELETED]

>>5079747
I guess you meant you played with one credit quite a bit. And yeah it's pretty much a main line Psikyo game despite the horizontal perspective. Biggest difference doesn't even impact one credit play: it's the only one of them that I recall that doesn't send you back to the beginning of the stage upon continuing after the set of random stages.
For two loops it's allegedly one of the, if not the hardest by them.

Battle Garegga and Terra Diver (twice) have been mentioned in this very thread. Raizing is also one of the most popular companies in the shmup community.
The lack of Raizing attention you see is just the overall lack of attention this board has for made-for-arcade games, couple that with a distaste for shmups as a whole and... yeah.

Shmups was the most popular genre in the arcades before the fighting game craze started by Street Fighter II. Raiden, which came out a year before that, was a big international success.
These days, however, you're right due to how much the gaming landscape has changed.

>>5080584
Maybe not, except possibly the blonde girl in that game. Thing is, with Psikyo games, their first randomized levels are made to be beatable on reaction by the average player, even if you can't you have some bombs. Notice how you reached stage 4, which is the first non-random level. This is the usual stuff, after that point it's where they put memorization requirements to survive in their games, even in the first loop. Then there's their second loops which are like 10 time as hard except for their first couple of games where they're harder but not as much. In other words, they're designed so that the average player can have a decent amount of playtime and with a fresh experience thanks to randomized orders, but quickly ramping up the challenge right after that, which is the point only good an dedicated players will survive. This formula lasted them almost a decade so it worked quite well.

>>5080573
Give Image Fight a chance, man.

After a bit of research I've decided on the Hori SS Fighting Stick, and depending on whether or not I find it acceptable I'll swap out the parts for Sanwa buttons and a Seimitsu joystick (the latter of which apparently takes some work with a Dremel to get it to fit, but it's doable).

Personally I'd really like to build my own arcade stick, but it'd need to be something I could use on all my systems. I wonder how feasible it'd be to do a DIY probably defaulted to USB and then have it also adapt to anything from dreamcast to saturn to genesis to playstation, etc
