Modern sonic.

Classic Sonic is charming and wholesome and looks much more like a little animal that can roll into a ball. NuSonic looks like a lanky smarmy tryhard that listens to Limp Bizkit and never shuts up with corny lingo that was outdated 20 years before he first spoke. Shadow is a cringey gun carrying edgelord who swears for no reason, has a human girlfriend who is murdered by the government, and only appeals to the cringiest sperglords alive. Metal meanwhile is just a cool robot. I miss the simple times when tiny animal mascots didn't talk and engage in retarded emo soap operas.

The Dreamcast arguably had a much stronger lineup than either the Xbox or PlayStation. It also had 2k sports games. The issue was that the PlayStation name was an absolute juggernaut by and trumped any of that.

You say that but SA1+2 were very popular at the time.
The truth is that Dreamcast was a dead man walking from the very start. After the fuck-ups with the 32X and Saturn, contrasting with the popularity of the PS1 and soon-to-be-released PS2, there was simply nothing the Dreamcast could've ever done to "save Sega". They really did the best they could. It made for a nice going-away party, at least.

Madden didn’t catch on until the 7th gen. 2k sports were the big titles at the time and were the best selling games on the platform. DC has really strong launch sales and preorders and a great attachment rate. It launched with Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder, 2k Titles, powerstone, ready 2 rumble and some. It had a ridiculous lineup with tons of great games coming out within the next few months. DC died because of the Sega name. It just couldn’t compete with Sony.

I'm also disappointed in the 32X not working. I actually like the idea behind it. Rather than making customers pay like 100+ dollars per game using special chips like SNES games such as Doom, Yoshi, and Starfox, just have a dedicated device that does the same function across multiple games, reduce overall cost. But of course the design and support and timing were all off, but in principle it was a sound idea. But all things being as they were, they should've ditched the idea and not fucked up the saturn launch as well. Those two things are what ruined Sega's clout with american consumers and retailers, and Saturn could've been an actual contender otherwise. Still wouldn't have beaten PS1, but it could've actually had significance rather than being something that most people don't even know existed at the time.

And then if they did that they wouldn't have needed to rush the Dreamcast out early. Could've released it in 2000 with better hardware and support and possibly lasted through the entire 6th gen.

Yeah I was gonna say lol, quake 3 on DC was marvelous

This is from my point of view from how I remember things, but I always felt that the release of the Dreamcast came at a weird time in terms of console generation.

Dreamcast released on 9-9-99, one year after one of the arguably strongest years for both Nintendo and Sony in terms of quality and quantity. Not only that, by the time DC was released, Sony had announced they were working the PS2 for about 6 months already, for a scheduled NA release in late 2000. They had a tough run from the start.

While personally, I do think Sega released some games that were amazing, I just don't think they had a quantity of games to justify for people to buy a Dreamcast. Most people were probably happy with the status quo and were content to wait a year for the PS2, since the ps1 had no shortage of good games to get.

Again this is just my opinion but I do think the quality of the hardware may have came into play as well. My PS1, SNES, GameCube, PS2 have all been through a lot of shit, but to this day everything runs fine with almost no issues. My DC on the other hand only lasted for a couple of years tops; the laser disc went out much much faster than my PS2 fat one did, as well as the cables and the DC memory card.

PS2.

Simply put, even before Dreamcast 9/9/99 release, PS2 was the most hyped console in all history. Even the cashiers at stores like Babbage's, Electronics Boutique, FuncoLand, et cetera were even suggesting to customers not to bother with the Dreamcast as PS2 was on the way. The fanboy mind poison was so bad that some of the people looking at Dreamcast graphics saw them as little better than PS1 (called back then PSX...I never understood why) graphics. This were the same idiots who proclaimed "Muh Emotion Engine" and thought that the first generation of PS2 games had the greatest graphics they'd ever seen on any game system (this would later be closer to the truth as the games developed, but the early PS2 titles were grainy/blocky as all hell; Dreamcast graphics may have been ridgy, but nowhere near that bad Compare DC Dead or Alive 2 to the PS2 version and you'll see what I mean).

tl:dr Sega hurt themselves with their earlier botched consoles and they couldn't compete with Sony's hype machine.

To give you an idea of how badly folks fell for Sony's hype, during the Christmas of 2000 Sony did not have enough PS2's released to meet market demand. About the only way you were going to have one is if you pre-ordered. The folks lucky enough to actually buy a PS2 at launch were often able to flip them unto the second hand market at substantial profit. $1500 PS2's (just the console itself) advertised in the local paper classified ads were nothing unheard of....or even that unusual...and they sold. Keep in mind MSRP at launch was US $299.

Common sense would tell them to buy the Dreamcast instead...and many people did, allowing Sega to play catch up to some extent. But...the majority still held out for PS2. Hell, even I eventually had a slimline.

Something people don't realize is that from 1999-2001 the Dreamcast sold 9 million units. That's roughly half the Gamecube's overall sales in half the time. It pains me to admit this as an old Sega fanboy who supported 32x, Saturn, and Dreamcast to the bitter end, but Sega never really fixed how they ran their company. In order for them to break even on Shenmue, they would've had to sell twice as many copies as they sold consoles and that's one game. Sega was bleeding money because they weren't being realistic with the hand they were dealt.

If Sega wasn't retarded with their finances, they could have had sales on par with Gamecube or Xbox. Shit, Xbox might not have even gotten off the ground initially. The early adopters of the Xbox were people like me who only bought the fucker to play Shenmue 2, Sega GT 2002, Jet Set Grind, Otagi 1&2, etc.

It seemed like Sega had to be first out of the gate with new hardware after the Genesis. But each attempt came off half-baked. It's interesting to see how each new piece of hardware gets features from the last devices. To the average consumer, they want to know that the new device is going to be supported.

When I was a kid, most kids had a Genesis over SNES, and barely any of them bought a Sega CD and no one I knew had a 32X.

Sega was completely lost as far as vision. SoJ and SoA were constantly at odds with one another. At one point, Sega wanted to have Windows CE be *the* API of choice for Dreamcast development, but that didn't pan out so the tools available for game devs at launch were lackluster.

Compare this to Sony - they knew they wanted the PS2 to be a major multimedia console. They knew that good tools were essential and so had them ready months after the PS2 was announced. And they knew that they were going to live or die by the grace of third-party devs, so they made sure it was as painless to publish on the PS2 as possible. Sony pretty much did everything right that Sega did wrong, which is why the PS2 was the best-selling videogame console of all time and the Dreamcast is relegated to quirky cult status.

I bought a DC day one with Sega Rally (it launched with about 3 games in Australia). I built up a pretty decent library. It was a good console.

I was lucky that my Electronics Boutique (as it was known then), actually had Sega Rally, as most shops were stuck with TrickStyle, Ready2Rumble and some other garbage. Games, VMU's and other stuff slowly trickled in over the next few weeks. Disastrous launch in Australia.

It did though, and one could argue that the Utopia Boot Disk had as much to do with it as Sony's domination in the market. Sony were making the PS2 mostly in-house, and it could play DVDs. Meanwhile, Sega has to outsource damn near all components, and they settled on GD-ROM as their format. Big mistake. Then the price wars, and Sega losing their ass on the consoles, and due to aforementioned boot disk they couldn't recoup losses on the software with the scant few who (in comparison) actually bought a Dreamcast.

I bought one a good while after the dust settled. It's a fine system with nice capabilities, but can see why it failed. In my opinion it was Sega's first good console.

>>5082463
Sort of a myth with no verifiable proof. I recall people being super-anal about placing dummy files to keep all data to the inside or outside, but there's never been a shred of proof that it did anything. Backups play about the same. One could possibly argue that a backup is harder to read than an original disk, but again, unverifiable hearsay at best.

I know that Dreamcast rips sometimes didn't fit, so bik and other formats were downsampled (shrunk) to make them fit standard CD-r. But yeah. At first the utopia boot disk enabled bootlegs to play (which was something because a burnt copy worked great). Later, they figured out how to make them self-boot, though a few titles still require the boot disk (storage contraints, iirc). Other than that, they used to require Discjuggler, a niche burning program only ever really used for Dreamcast bootlegs. Imgburn probably burns them fine these days. *nods*

Regardless, everyone wanted Sonic Adventure, Powerstone or Soul Calibur. I ended up getting all three a couple of weeks later, but it was a long wait just playing Sega Rally. I was always tempted to buy Blue Stinger.

Ended up with some of the best RPG's at the time though

Grandia 2, Skies of Arcadia, PSO, Evolution (I enjoyed it), TimeStalkers (I also enjoyed it), Elemental Gimmick Gear. Unfortunately there weren't that many RPG's released in the west for DC :( Thankfully it was super easy to crack.

Dreamcast didn't have enough time to get known well enough to succeed, just as it was getting more popular they canned it. People who didn't keep up tech news had no idea what it was. Even the ps1 took about 2 years before it stated making an impact with mainstream gamers. It would be like if sega dropped the genesis just before the snes released but by the time people found out about Dreamcast it was already discontinued.

I hung out with a skater clique when I was in HS, and yes they were very "chad". They were always very tall, much older-looking even though they were a grade below me (I assume they had been held back some years due to never doing any schoolwork, lol), deliciously bronzed latino boys who wore a lot of black and listened to nu metal. Though this was early 2000's so it was more the Slipknot/Coal Chamber/Mudvayne school of nu metal, but the point still stands that nu metal was never "uncool" until music journalists started telling people that it was; those bands were top-sellers and constantly being featured on movie soundtracks back in the day.

Fucking this. Nu metal was all about macho posturing with misogynistic lyrics and it was great. It was obviously made for male teenagers looking to blow off steam and we loved it. It was de facto music for wrestling and skateboarding back in the days. Also, I hate emo. It was the antithesis of nu metal but the mainstream chose the whinyass virgin emo instead of keeping up with chad nu metal since 2003-2004.

Everyone must have had different Chads than we did in central California in the 80's/90's. Our chads spent their recreational time doing steroids in the weight room at school, and robbing/jumping kids outside of school. They also listened to whatever was popular at the time. Yeah they'd show up at parties, have the "cute preps" with them. But even then they still dipped into the bathroom to inject each other, and still did their best to jump anyone at the party who didn't have a larger group of friends than them.

I wish our chads were just 'the cool skateboard kids', then us 'cool skateboard kids' wouldn't have gotten into so many scuffles with them.
