Personally 3 is my favorite so I'll defend it til the day I die. The pacing is great, it's no Dragon Quest V but I loved watching the tragic life of the protagonist unfold. I always felt like the storylines in BoF games weren't the best, though. What sold me on the series was the graphical style, the animations, the dragon transformations, the gameplay and the music. 3 has a really cool system with dragon genes, unique skill learning and master-based stat upgrades, and the jazzy soundtrack is just my favorite by far.

Should I play this? I was going to skip right over it and jump in at 4.

So suikoden 2 isn't good? I'm asking in earnest, I've got a whole list of jrpgs I'm making my way to through. Suikoden 2 and bof4 seem to be on everyone's best of Playstation lists. Legend of dragoon is not as commonly praised, though I played it as a kid definitely remember it being a turd.

when you're playing 1, 2, 3, it's the imagination that pulls you, the idea that the game could be more that it is amidst all the roughness and the experimentation in the narrative, then 4 is like this big crisis of philosophy and just peels out this ridiculously fascinating otherworldly story almost like it was unintentional, then you play 5 and you realize that everything about 4 was intentional and the themes of abandonment and isolation and systematic abuse and finding friends all come to this perfect cohesive single trimmed down 10 hour experience that ties narrative into the entire gameplay

What a shit opinion.

It's an excellent, fun adventure. Dragon system was never better before or after it, fishing was just in the right spot between annoying and rewarding, locations were varied and interesting. The game is chock full of secret stuff, items, skills, enemies. The doom& gloom of the encroaching desert was portrayed perfectly, and the ending was bittersweet.
