Why was Mario Bros 3 so Japanese, considering Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros and arguably Super Mario Bros 2/Doki Doki Panic were fairly devoid of similar influences?

You remind me certain panel I've once attended, where people were ultimately complaining how anime is full of inserts from Japanese social culture, like the way of handling business or adressing your superiors and stuff like that. It never apparently occured to those people that if X made something, then it's going to reference things X is familiar with.
And you are just like those people.

That sounds like a very shitty panel, of course Japanese Anime is going to have a lot of shit from Japanese culture, much like how western media takes a lot of inspiration from western culture, and Russian media takes a lot of inspiration from Russian culture, same with British media. A lot of a nation's fictional works take a lot of inspiration from their native folk tales and life in general. If you're going to complain about how there's "Too much Japanese Culture in Japanese anime", you might as well go bitching about every British TV show ever.

Believe it or not, but it was an academic discussion about the effect of "soft power" in media.
Not my fault the moderator was shit and eventually students started argue about anime.
If it helps, eventually it went back to the proper subject. And I partially understand their grief, because the examples brought really were annoying stuff that takes Japs to do. Either way, the argument for a while went back and forth about the anime and then went back to the situation why soft power can fail, going back to anime... you get the picture. That back and forth went for a while, until eventually people got tired and moderator managed to seize control.

They never were ones to question the inspiration of any given design. That’s kind of why Mario enemies are so all over the place. The setting allows them to invent stuff whole cloth for the needs of the gameplay without needing to justify it.

Koopa Troopa seem based on the Mario Bros turtles, which were turtles because they are the sort of enemy that could be incapacitated by being flipped over. So, what probably happened was they thought of the Racoon Suit first (presumably for the tail attack and glide, though even that is a bit strange) and thought of the Tanooki as a super powered version and thought “Oh, we can make him turn into a statue”. Or maybe there’s something about Tanooki flying in Japanese myth and they just thought of that when they decided to make a flying Mario suit. The Racoon thing could’ve come afterwards, I guess.

Actually, it was reverse. Complains right and left were flying about the fact Japanese are pretty fucking sexist (and we are talking real sexism here, not some SJW bullshit), so naturally all sort of female characters in anime ultimately are reduced into house-wifes and not for the house-wife fetish, but simply as "know your place, woman". Unless, of course, they are moeblobs, but moeblobs serve the purpose of being cute and girly by default. Or how absolutely every single character must be ultimately a comformist with no spine (even if they are a rebellous type), because it's made by Japanese for Japanese, thus ultimately everything must be orderly and within existing norms, so know your place, deliquent. I particularly remember entire slew of complains thrown at Wolf Children (it just hit cinemas around that period), which has ending that pretty much says "If you are a girl and want to do things on your own - tough fucking luck, now back to kitchen; your brother is allowed whatever, becuase he has a dick". And it's so god-damn heavy-handed you had even waifu-sniffing weebs complaining about it.

Funny what stuff you can get on serious panel held in Polish university if moderator is shit.

And nobody is denying that, because the big part of the whole talk was how cultural differences shape perception of what is allowed in the first place (not a big discovery, but hey, panel with students, entire cirriculum based on Said's "Orientalism" and its impact and what not).
It was simply amazing how many people were ultimately unable to realise the fact they are pissed at something comes from the fact they come from different culture, but consume media produced and delivered by different culture. And a pretty distant one, which didn't have almost any sort of cultural exchange prior to '89, not counting the oriental craze of late 1890s.
Ultimately my point is how important it is to not only realise you are dealing with different culture, but then keep that in mind AND act on it. Otherwise all that you are going to achieve is salt.

Not even him, but please, stop, this is simply embarrasing. Canidae is a Family, which is not the same as dog - a Subspecies of Species called wolf. If English language somehow makes those terms equal, then I now understand what he meant by his rant.
It's like you would call everything within Hominidae Family a human.

Well, that's the culture of the country, and as you've said it's going to be reflected in its media. If you don't want to experience the facets of foreign culture, you shouldn't be watching or playing it.

Japan is a special case because it's currently changing fundamentally to become more globalized due to many socio-political reasons.

Canidae comes from canis, which is Latin for dog. It is, for that reason, often casually referred to as "the dog family." Tanuki are canids that look like raccoons. It makes perfect sense and is completely accurate to call them raccoon dogs.

>Calling things kitsch is now pseudo-indellectualism
>Things can't be somehow kitsch unless they are art
>And only things that qualify as art are Fine Arts
2018, ladies and gents. 2018, because reading this single line I felt like I somehow visited 1790s Prussia, experiencing firsthand Kant.
You want to know why Kant had his retarded theory for art and reactions toward it? Because he was a teacher, whos well-being and profit depended on blind obedience and bowing to a infamously narrow-minded Prussian nobility, also infamous for consuming pretensional art in fuck-huge quantity.
Meaning the whole stuff around kitsch can be summed up in "things that doesn't cause uncritical orgasm". And uncritical orgasm can only be achieved by gazing on things that have been declared by an "expert" as True Art (capital leters).
And yet, in year 2018, I have to explain why Kantian idea of art is fucked and why, because apparently you've missed both modernism AND post-modernism in art and societal impact.
