do you think that Policenauts would've been accepted today?

it seems like Snatcher and Policenauts are the only games they own that Konami hasn't exploited.

when these came out, i dont think games like this were openly accepted and were probably deemed a risk. today it seems like VNs and story driven adventure games are all the rage now since Hollywood has failed to give anything of worth.

i wonder if Policenauts would have been a success if it got a chance today's platforms.

The fuck you are even trying to argue? It was literally Blade Runner: The Unlicensed Game and Lethal Weapon: The Unlicensed Game. It was guaranteed success by default.

They were accepted with open arms on release. At least in Japan.
And yes today they would be accepted even in the west, as the genre is popular over here now.

Policenauts and Snatcher are two of my favorite games, but I think a lot of people only like them now because they have Kojima's name on them.

If we're talking about the West, you're right that Snatcher wasn't widely accepted, but it really had no chance since it was a 1994 Sega CD release. Jeremy Blaustein, the localization lead, said that Snatcher only sold "a couple of thousand" copies in the US and Canada.

Yeah, Konami decided to localise Snatcher for the Sega CD because the TurboGrafx 16 was dead in the west. They couldn't release the PCE CDROM version in the west, because there was no market for that console in 1994.

Apparently Konami had no idea that Snatcher was even ported to the Sega CD and released in western territories. The Sega CD/ Mega CD port was made without Kojima. Kojima was apparently surprised when someone brought a copy of the Sega CD version for him to autograph because he never saw it before. He was flipping through the manual and shocked that Snatcher made it to the west.

But Snatcher on the Sega CD was never released in Japan, because the Mega CD in Japan was a failure for Sega. There as no real market there, and the PCE CD-ROM was still being sold in that region at the time.

Pollicenauts was planned to be released for the Sega Saturn in western territories in October of 1996. But I guess Konami decided that it wasn't worth the money to localise it.

This flyer image I included was actually packaged with the North American Sega Saturn in 1996, and even Sega advertised that Policenauts would be coming to the console. They had a mock up image of the NA box art.

I've definitely seen that box art before, but I'm not sure if I realized what it was. The excuse that was given for not localizing Policenauts was that synchronizing English voices with the animations would have been too difficult, but I think they looked at the Sega/Mega CD sales numbers and changed their minds.

You'll be fine. Snatcher and Policenauts are BARELY Adventure games. Progressing usually just means interacting with everything on the screen. There are no real puzzles. It's also interspersed with some basic FPS sequences.

I get the feeling konami simply doesn't give a shit about any of their old stuff. For example, Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps, and Rocket Knight Adventures have never seen a rerelease. Not on PSN, XBLA, VC, compilations, nothing.

Lorraine and Anna are the only named female characters who you can't grope. Karen and Meryl take some special circumstances, but it is possible. To this day I haven't managed to convince Meryl to let me touch her fun bags. I know how to do it, but it's tough.

People have to understand the market for these games in Japan. Hideo Kojima started out in the home PC division of Konami, and the Japanese home PC crowd were into much more "adult" eroge styled games on home PC's like the PC88 and PC98. Snatcher and Policenauts were really designed to appeal to those markets. Policenauts more so than Snatcher, because Policenauts was designed for the ero-anime visual novel machine; the PC-98.

Hideo Kojima didn't really make the transition to home console development until Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PS1. His first home console project was Snatcher for the PC-Engine PC. The PCE version was the basis for the Sega CD port, which Hideo Kojima had nothing to do with. Then he worked on Policenauts for the 3DO hardware. The 3DO was another console that was aimed at the anime-ero crowd in Japan, as that was the only market it had. Metal Gear Solid was also planned for the 3DO, but it was shifted to the PS1 for many obvious reasons.

the 3DO port of Policenauts was the basis for the PS1 and Saturn ports. Snatcher also got ports on the PS1 and Saturn as well. But those ones had a lot more censorship than any other version that was released before them. The Satnur was less censored than the PS1 port, though.

>Blade Runner had its game in form of Snatcher

There is an adventure game of Blade Runner made by Westwood Studios, and it's really good.

But Snatcher serves as a good animu version of Blade Runner.

Personally, I think Snatcher and Policenauts are some of Kojima's best games, story wise.

I know there is a Blade Runner game. And it's definitely in top 10 of adventure games ever made regardless of how you count it (can even enter top 5), so it's hard not to know about it.
It still doesn't make Snatcher any less a variation on Blade Runner, thou.

So I just played through disc 1 and some change of the saturn translation yesteday. Liking it so far. I've always been a fan of things like scanning research and data log entries in games like Metroid Prime or Deus Ex, and this is basically an entire game based around this point.

A little confused about the Meryl cameo though. The game presents it as a very blatant reference to Meryl from MGS... but that game didn't come out for another 5 years.
