Recently got my first Genesis. Never had one as a kid, only played one a few times, but ended up getting a great deal for a Genesis and some games (Landstalker and Beyond Oasis).

I've got these two gems, what else should I get? What are the best Genesis games? Which controllers are the best? I need to know this stuff!

The Activator is the best controller. I still have it complete in box

>> No.5062362

What kind of games do you like anon? I love the Genesis, it has so many awesome games.

Action: Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III, Shadow Dancer, Rolling Thunder 2 & 3, Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, X-Men 2

Adventure: Crusader of Centy, Light Crusader, Ecco the Dolphin

Platformer: Rocket Knight Adventures, Cool Spot

RPG: Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force 1 & 2, Phantasy Star 2-4, Warsong

I've heard awesome things about the Phantasy Star series.

I like all kinds of stuff, recently started playing more SNES JRPG's I missed as a kid (I never played the Breath of Fire series for some reason).

Honestly Phantasy Star 4 far and away destroys every game that came out before it. 2 is worth playing but it's definitely dated compared to 4. 4 is just a fantastic game that stands among Chrono Trigger and FF6 easily.

thats cool. I grew up mostly playing the genesis.
Just to name a few these games are pretty cool:
Shinobi III

Vectorman
Whip Rush
Mortal Kombat 1,2, and 3

I'm sure there's a lot more games other anons can recommend.

I would say my favorite ones
>Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. (I think 3 was the worst one though)
>Streets of Rage 1&2
>Desert Strike
>Toejam and Earl
>Shadow Run
>Columns
>Revenge of Shinobi
>Golden Axe 1&2
>Mortal Kombat 1, 2 & 3
>Beyond Oasis

Ecco the Dolphin was actually okay too.

Different games. SNES version is more about solving problems and figuring out what to do next, Genesis version is more about doing missions to grind nuyen and karma to move forward. I prefer Genesis myself.

I don't want to overhype it because that can deffinitely kill a game, but I think it's easily on par with CT or FFVI.

The Shining Force games are worth checking out as well. They're not amazing, but they're solid and fun.

There are some dirt cheap multi carts on Aliexpress that have over 100 games for about 10 bucks. I bought 2 last October and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface with all the great games I've been playing like Castlevania, the Batman games, the Treasure games, Ristar, too many to name.

If you're wanting official games only though the 6 Pak is a pretty good place to start. It has a good variety of well known Genesis titles and it's dirt cheap these days.

Come on now. I'm not even going to touch the b8 about the exclusives being shit, but a ton of the multiplats were superior on genesis. Genny had the better versions of Earthworm Jim, Power Rangers, Robocop vs Terminator, Aladdin, Mickey Mania, SF2, and so on.

Is it true that the model 2 has a better composite picture quality than the model 1?

Is there even a minor difference?

>> No.5071061

>>5071020
I was under the impression that all geneses had shit composite regardless. Both my model 1s have shitty jailbars when run through composite, especially on blue surfaces, as well as a rainbow effect on things like the waterfalls in sanic.

I run them through RGB nowdays though. Even if you don't have a PVM, it's totally worth it to get the RGB scart cable and one of those relatively cheap RGB-component transcoders, that way you can at least do component video on a consumer CRT. That's what I did before picking up the PVM a while back.

>> No.5071293

>>5071061
I have a rgb scart cable, eurofag so i just plug it directly into the tv. But i like the softer image composite gives, Snes composite looks great but Mega drive is way too blurry, atleast on my model 1. I heard someone say the model 2 has a little better composite image, not by much but still.

If you can get one of the VA4 model 2s with the Sony CXA1645 encoder the composite will be relatively good, free of the obvious rainbow banding present on model 1s. Of course the sound quality will be markedly worse than a pre-VA7 model 1. Personally I prefer just using a 32X, which also has the Sony encoder, but those have gotten expensive lately thanks to LE HIDDEN GEM YouTube trash.

>but those have gotten expensive lately thanks to LE HIDDEN GEM YouTube trash.
damn, you're right. I just checked pricecharting and that shit has tripled compared to what they used to be a few years back. Can't imagine why though. The "le hidden gem" meme is annoying, but the 32x is probably one of the systems where you can legitimately say that there are NO HIDDEN GEMS. There's Knuckles, Kolibri, Shadow Squadron, and a bunch of arcade ports that, while good, are on other systems like the saturn or playstation.

Chakan is pretty trash imo. There are far better action-platformers on the system. Xmen 2, Rocket Knight Adventures, Gunstar Heroes, Strider, Shinobi series, and much more.

Ranger X is fucking cool. I recommend anyone buying it to also get a six-button controller too. It plays much better that way.

Yes, you can flip the console over and look at the vents. The VA4 motherboard is smaller, so there will be some empty space visible. See here: https://segaretro.org/Mega_Drive_PCB_revisions
