Battle Circuit is cool. Most Capcom games are great. Try Sengoku 3 too.

Konami games are fun and worth playing, but generally not as well made as Capcom games I'd say. Except for stuff like Violent Storm which feels more like a Capcom beat-em-up. Despite this, I'd still recommend playing stuff like The Simpsons, X-Men, and the TMNT games, especially with other people. Capcom games are better if you want to try to 1CC them, generally.

Speaking of Konami, try TMNT Manhattan Project on NES, it's cool and gets forgotten sometimes.

That one's worth a single playthrough just so you know what a garbage beat em up looks like, same with the Konami TMNT games. Can then come back to Capcom games and enjoy them that much more

River City Ransom (NES): You can more freely around the city beating the lunch money off random punks and using it to buy food to raise your stats. If playing solo the GBA version can work too.

Dungeons and Dragons Tower of Doom (and Shadow over Mystara) (Arcade): fun Capcom one, has some routes to take, items and spells, stupid fun with more players.

Battle Circuit (Arcade): characters control well with a large variety of moves, you can collect money to buy upgrades and to affect the final battle.

Armored Warriors (Arcade): /m/ the beat'em-up, you can change parts of your mech for more variety, and even combine them in 2-3 player modes. Cyborg Justice for the Genesis is similar but much worse.

Streets of Rage 1-3 (Genesis): Their high and low points vary with each game, but they are generally pretty solid, specially with a second player.

Guardians (Arcade): Some character variety and more emphasis on combos. Not superior stuff but also fun. Sengoku 3 is a good alternative.

Playing the American version of SOR3 and getting destroyed Made it to level 7 twice and died. Any tips on how to get good at it? Zan seems to be my favorite.

Avoid final fight. It's rubbish, the AI is cheap as fuck. If they decide they dont want to get hit by you they magically dodge your attacks by moving the entire sprite several pixels away from you in a single frame AFTER you have thrown a punch at them.
The enemies can also have I-frames whenever they feel like it.
It is a garbage game designed to steal your money.
People recommending it have only played it once when they were 9 years old at a crusty arcade and they thought it was "bad ass", but they haven't played it since, or any other beatemup since.
If you have to play a final fight game at least play final fight 3 on SNES.

Shadow Over Mystara is my No.1 Beat 'Em Up of all time. I am not hugely fond of the genre, but fuck its good. So are some other games there but SOM the most.
