So I tried Arcanum some years back, but it didn't grab me and left it on the opening.
I had a similar experience then with PST, and after a second replay I ended up warming up to it and I enjoyed it a lot.
So I think I should give this another try.
Anything I should know?

Avoid the real-time battle mode. The combat isn't the game's strong regardless, but the real-time mode makes it a lot worse.

arcanum has the GOAT setting, story that goes from very good to ok and absolutely dogshit combat, the most OP weapons are throwing, counterintuitively and if you don't go the magic route and get teleport, cheat to teleport anyway, because travel without it is beyond tedious

The character creation is really the best part of that game. Setting is super cool, lots of fun lore both in-game and in the manual.

The game can be roughtly divided into 3 "acts" (internally, it's a continous story, hence the quotation marks). First two acts are fucking peak performance of old-school RPG. Final act will make you drop the game or end up forcing to continue.
Quests vary from epic quality to ok, combat sucks ass and the deeper you go, the more of combat is for you. NPCs are great, most of followers are epic (and I wish all of them had voice acting), Dog is the best thing ever, builds have to be carefully, but not autistically planned ahead and early game is hell for technologists.

Other than that, everything what >>5054289 said. ESPECIALLY the bit about teleport. Eventually you end up going so much back and forth all over the map teleport is a must-have, even for non-magic user, so cheat for it if you have to.

Troika: Maybe if we didn't try to be so ambitious, we'd still be in business.

Oh, and one more important thing. If you are rising some stat, be absolutely sure to reach 20 or more. Normally, you can increase all stats by 12, and humans start with all their stats at 8. If you are planning to, say, be a melee fighter, DO NOT pick a character that will end up with less than 20 in Str or Dex, even once maxed out.

The game is like a mix of shit with diamonds, it's like they were completely different people doing it at the same time.
It goes all Torment-like dialogue and then it throws you endless shitty combat like some sort of Icewind Dale. It makes even less sense if you consider the whole Troika production; they made ToEE, with one of the best turn-based combats ever made and excellent graphics but irrelevant story and characters.

It should be and maybe it is one of the best WRPG ever made but when I remember the long ass repetitive dungeons and hours of boredom I don't even feel like replaying it again.

Mechanics go beyond combat. Problem is Arcanum is filled with unavoidable combat.

Nobody gives a fuck about your shitty TTRPG game, Hans. And the retro games were shit.

There is a reason why I play as grenadier in Arcanum each and every time I feel like replaying. Because it allows to skip entirely the shit-tier combat with just handful of explosions.

>>5055586
It's not as much as broken as it's simply god-awful. I'm still revolted by the non-stop fighting in the end-game. Bonus points if you made a non-combat character and reached Caladon or so. Suddenly your game is pretty much over.

Idea was interesting, in that, "What would a industrial revolution look like if it took place in a D&D/Tolkien setting", but its execution was lacking.

>> No.5056297

While I do love the game I recognize it is a deeply flawed gem and has some strange game design choices.

I highly recommend getting an idea for the kind of character you want to make and then doing a little research before you play about what followers you are eligible for. You should get enough charisma to have two followers. Do not treat your companions like advanced other character you can take control of. Just accept that you have next to no control over them. Equip them with the best armor you can and use them as meatshields and mules. One I recommend to any build is Sogg who is located in the first town.

The reason I say to look this stuff up before hand is that all of the characters already have a chosen morality, level, and tech/magic affinity. Certain followers will only go along with certain character builds so it helps to know who you should be paired up with and when/where you get them.

>> No.5056379

There's a minimum level of what I can accept for shitty mechanics, and the combat in this one goes way under that line. I just can't enjoy it due to that, same reason I can't play Torment.

The execution is pretty good, as far as the setting itself is concerned.
It's the god-awful combat that ruins the game and by the end there is nothing but said combat

Still more patient than me. I just cheat my stats to the point where I can real-time-combat bonk someone in the head without worrying about my health. Then I can enjoy they actual good parts of the game without getting mad at it.

>> No.5056989

There was a recipe in the manual and ever since I started baking I've wanted to try that one.
>Anything I should know?
You can beat the game with just about any kind of character, but some builds are by miles better than others, so don't expect any sense of balance. Also realtime combat sucks.
