First disc is great. The you find out the game is unfinished and you realise it's a gigantic piece of shit and the time spent playing the first disc was a complete waste of time.

One of the best RPGs ever. I can overlook the flaws given everything else in the game; from the music, the story, the graphics, the battle system, the characters. The game is AMBITIOUS and I will always give a game higher marks for attempting greatness even if it falls short.

Hating endlessly on disc 2 is the biggest fucking meme. Here is what you missed:

Elly/Emeralda dungeon that's just an abandoned weapons factory. You already get to play these aspects in the Goliath Factory and Zeboim ruins.

Bart retreading Kislev's main complex maybe with some random encounters. You already got to play Bart shenanigans like three or four times over.

Onions Systems, you already got to play this in Solaris.

Mahanon, you already got to play this in Babel Tower.

Emeralda's/Maria's Anima Relic dungeons, the 2 dungeons we got are already the worst parts of the game.

Everything else like Elly/Margie in Nisan would have still been a cutscene.

I think the biggest loss is how Elly's development into basically the patron saint of Nissan is just kind of dumped on you after fucking Hammer's fight. I understand they could only do so much with that they had but it's a significant change to a core character. You can see her caring, kindness and nurturing side showing through earlier in the game, but she's barely over her own internal conflict over her head and hart versus her sense of duty when it just kind of gets slapped on you.

Nah, it's mostly pretty reasonable criticism. The problem isn't so much disc 2 in and of itself, but the fact that it happened that way at all. The pacing of the game is a complete mess. You spend a shit-ton of time getting to know the world including lots of mundane parts of it like the Kislev prison and the Thames floating city. There's the Solaris and the Gebler and Shevat and Nisan... For most of this time, the story moves at a glacial pace, revealing a little bit at a time. Granted, there's a hell of a lot to reveal and that's why Xenogears is such a well-liked game. But still. Holy shit.

And then, in disc 2, everything starts moving really fucking fast. The Gazel Ministry uses the Gaetia key which basically initiates a zombie apocalypse. Cain and the Gazels are dispatched by Krelian. The party finally discovers the Eldritch. The Zohar shit finally starts coming into play. etc.

Disc 2 subsequently feel very disconnected from disc 1 except for main character arcs (like Fei and Elly finally getting sex from each other). Disc 2 feels like it happens in an entirely different world, which would be less of a problem if it wasn't all storyboards and some cutscenes.

Honestly, its giving me less hope than anything because they were kinda trying to go that route with xenoblade chronicles x and then they went back to the safe route in xenoblade 1. I think that's all that Takahashi will continue to focus on until he retires. My hopes for him, Nintendo, and square enix collaborating on a xenogears remake and finish the whole story are all but gone now. Then again, I could be wrong, because I never thought that a SOR4 would ever happen.

We will never see what Takahashi and his wife Sora planned for what could have been the greatest Japanese sci fi RPG ever...Project Noah. Its been 20 years people and 3-4 retakes. They will never move beyond a narrative that they refuse to build on.

What the hell, Ive never played xenogears and didn't know it falls off the cliff in the second half. I'm surprised it's as highly regarded as it is.

Because it's a game that aims absurdly high and even largely unfinished still delivers a pretty much one of a kind experience. It's a game with such a powerful underlying vision that it can capture players' imaginations despite its shortcomings. There's a lot of works in a lot of mediums that tend to be highly regard despite some element.
