Wow, after rolling such a shitty NES game, I'm surprised this one is actually pretty fun. I walked into the first dungeon and got my ass kicked and was confused, so I walked back into town and bought some equipment, and wow, that made it a lot easier. The bosses can kick your ass if you aren't careful, though. The rings, at first, annoyed me because their energy drains quickly, but damn if they aren't handy during those boss fights. The game requires you to think ahead a little so you aren't running around one-shotting all the enemies with over-powered rings. The plot is pretty standard: you're a dude with a sword and shield going around killing things and rescuing people because you feel like it. Also, you have to collect statues so this guy Chester can't have them or something. Overall, I like the game so far.

However, I discovered something that maybe I shouldn't have. There's an easy way to level up by standing still where these infinitely spawning birds swoop down and swinging your sword like a mad man. Gold and exp add up like crazy doing this.

>> No.505196

Sprites on the NES work exactly the same as tiles, except that you can move them (obviously). Nintendo never put collision registers in any of their consoles which isn't a bad idea since they're quite useless anyway.

8x8 tiles are the basic NES graphics object and they can be three colors. Of the 52 total, 25 can be on screen at once (12 for sprites and 13 for the background). There are two pattern tables, one for sprites and one for background tiles. Sprites can be expanded to 8x16 (eg. SMB3 does this), but then you're cut back to 32 total. As a stock NES has only 4k of VRAM, each group of four background tiles has to share the same colors.

>>505234

In this screenshot, at least some of the fire graphics are being used as background tiles (they're obviously not sprites since there's >8 per scanline).

I tried out Guy. He's got the same speed, experience rate and health as Cody, but his attack animations are longer and I think he might do less damage. So I'll be sticking with Cody.

I can get to stage 5 without a problem, but it gets brutal after that. You have to fight Abigail again and I'm still struggling to get good against him (her?). I know how to play this kind of game, stay away from the boss and wait for him to do a particular attack, then when he's vulnerable for just a moment, move in and exploit the opening. Unfortunately, that opening is very small and I can't consistently get all the positioning to go my way. In addition to that, it's just not practical to attack in any other way. Abigail has a longer range in every direction, a perfect counterattack against jumping and far too much health to trade blows with recklessly.

And even if I manage to get past Abigail, I then have to contend with Sodom again. His fight is split into two parts. First uses the same AI as Abigail (But feels just a little bit harder), then when he's down to half health, he drops his blades and begins charging at you relentlessly. It's an easy pattern to manipulate (He charges in a straight line, just bait him into going horizontally, then beat on him when he stops), but if you make a mistake you'll likely take a few hits before getting him back into the right position.

If I get lucky and beat them both, I still have the cyborg man to take on, and if I run out of lives, it's right back to the beginning of the stage.

Also the game has a limited number of continues.

I'll keep trying, but it's going to take a lot of practice.

A pretty fun game all in all. Short and sweet, and pretty easy; you're honestly more of a danger to yourself than any of the enemies are once your bombs get really powered up. Glad for the gauntlet, never would have played it otherwise.

What sucks is that when you run out of lives, you lose all your experience to the next level, which pretty much means that once you need to use a continue, you won't be levelling up again.

The best part is, no matter what you hit, whether it's a car or a person, the scooter person does this tumble back that's hilarious as hell to watch. It's also a very fast animation and hard to capture so it's like trying to take a picture of Big Foot.

I can't stop laughing, holy shit. Why are sports games that involve skating usually so terrible? The only good one I can think of is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, but that's just nostalgia talking. And why are a bunch of GB games so QUALITY?

It's jarring/hilarious. This game was made in 2001, it seems. I'm not sure what qualifies as "beating this game", as there are three modes, Championship, Trick Mode, and Racing mode. Getting points is hilariously easy, as you can just stand in one spot and continuously do these piddly little tricks for 250 points a piece or so.

Been playing this, I remember AVGN mentioning it in the Bible Games Episode, and it's actually really good. It's Zelda-Like, and has pretty large world and bosses and everything. Your weapons are fruits, and each one does something different and can be upgraded so you can shoot more at once. Bombs are "God's Wrath" and the boomerang is "Samson's Jaw", which is pretty weird.

This boss battle is the hardest part so far

Need to bomb the walls until I find which lead upwards, while the guy up top shoots down and everyone else shoots left and right. Everyone but the top guy is indestructable, and he takes at least 5 bombs to kill.

It's annoying because they all seem to move randomly, and occasionally block my path with barrels, died 3 times so far from them blocking me in with them and poking me until I die

There's a tough fight that catches a lot of first time players by surprise. Which on it's own isn't worth a warning since you'll figure that out.

The kicker is that when prompted to save after the previous battle, it cuts you off from the map and sends you right into the tricky fight, so you can't go back and level up.

I had to restart my first play through because I couldn't beat the boss, but couldn't go back to level.

what is going on here? Is this some kind of proto-DRM that's keeping me from winning the game?

It's one of those games that tried to cash in on Street Fighter's popularity, but kind of shipped in an "As long as it can run" state.

It's slow and uncomfortable. You're given only punch, kick and jump buttons with (As far as I can tell) only a single special attack done by hitting punch and kick together. It has kind of a 3D plane going on, as you can move up and down a little, but not enough for it to make a meaningful difference to the fight. You're restricted to one character in the one player mode (Though -maybe- it lets you unlock more through passwords) and your enemies explicitly have better stats than you, though your own stats go up as you fight.

I didn't know I had the wrecking ball attack. Gonna try again later though, looking forward to it actually.

Okay, making progress again through this atrocity at last.

Special attacks are forward + punch + kick for an anti-air attack that leaves you extremely vulnerable if you tried to use it on someone while they're standing, even if you hit them with it. There's also back - > forward + punch + kick for a fireball. So often you'll be holding back instinctively to block, then your opponent will jump at you, you'll try to anti-air them, only to throw out a fireball and be kicked in the face in return.

This is not a well-thought-out game.
