What does /vr/ think of this series? Which are the best games in this series? What order do you guys recommend playing them in?

I did some research and DQ3 seems to be regarded as the best early entry point to the series. 1&2 seem to be disliked. So does 6 if I remember right.

I'm starting with 3 on the GBC.

>What does /vr/ think of this series?

Hated as a kid, liked as a teen, love as an adult.

Every game has something good to offer, but V, III, VIII and now XI are my favorites.

Dragon Warrior 1 & 2 were the first RPGs I ever played as a kid, I never played Final Fantasy until 4 (2 back then). The first two DW games defined what an RPG was to me. I bought an NES about 15 years ago and replayed the first one and while I still enjoyed it mostly due to nostalgia, the game is very very basic and grindy. Lol at having to select "stairs" from a menu to go up stairs. Good times.

Anyone know if the SNES remakes of 1&2 are worth playing at least?

I want to try them but I can't pin down whether the SNES or GBC versions are the way to go.

>>5048873
I hear the GBC one has slightly more content but SNES version is how I played 2 and I had a great time. Looks a lot better than the GBC version as well. If you do play 2 on the snes you can softlock your game by sleeping in a certain town near the end but I have heard you can avoid it by naming your characters 4 letters or less but I have not tested that

Christ nigger we've had hundreds of threads about DQ for years, start your thread better.

SNES remakes are better, unless you like cramped screen space.

>GBC
Should have played it on SNES.
Also avoid the DS ports as they removed content and fucked up the translation.
>>5048873
Play the SNES versions of 1-3. The GB versions have a tiny amount of extra content but it's not worth it as the resolution, graphics and audio are shit.

Last I heard 3 was only released in Japan for SNES. I'm gonna have to assume from your comments it's been translated. Is the translation any good? I'd hate to have the experience messed up by a fan's fanfic translation.

>> No.5049552

7 is great and the one that just came out if one of the best games ever made.

>> No.5049598

III is by far the high point for the series. Genuinely may be the finest JRPG ever made, does everything right. Outside of that, V is excellent and much closer to what modern Dragon Quest plays out like. You can't go wrong with either of those

I mean really they're all good. II is questionable. VII is probably my least favorite and what I'd consider to be the worst entry in the series outside of II. It gets a lot of love so maybe you'd like it, but I wouldn't say it's a great entry point

>> No.5050151

>>5049391
It's serviceable. You'll understand everything you need to know and with a few exceptions all the NPC chatter is done well. At least it's miles better than the official "translations" after 8.

III = V > IV > the rest > VI

I and II are archaic but still fun nonetheless. VI is just a huge slog to play and personally didn't had any fun with it.

>> No.5050191

I was thinking about getting a Nintendo DS XL just to play Dragon Quest but I am sceptical whether it is a good idea to play hundreds of hours of RPG on that shitty little low res screen.

Maybe I'll wait for a screen update or maybe they'll come out on the Switch eventually.

I'm a newcomer to the series and only played 1, 2 and 3 so far, so here's a fresh opinion not biased by nostalgia.

DQ1, as basic as it is, is fascinating in its simplicity. Only 1 character, fighting only 1 enemy at a time, it's really cool in its own way. The original NES version is a grindfest, but the GBC and SNES versions fixed that. It's a cool game to play in short bursts, perfect to emulate on your phone for example.

DQ2 is a big step up, with a party and a much bigger world (it's cute how a simplified version of the entire DQ1 map is just a zone in DQ2). It's still pretty simple as an rpg, with only 3 party members and fixed classes, but it's interesting for being such an improvement over the basic formula of DQ1. Still, for whatever reason it's my least favourite of the trio.

DQ3 really is a great game. A fully fledged RPG, that gives you the freedom to make your party as you see fit (not mandatory companions), and a big and interesting world. If you only play one game of the original trilogy, make sure it's 3.

I picked up VI for the DS and couldn't get invested in it, just started a new game on it though and I'm having a lot of fun (only 6 hours in though)

I'll probably just get IV and V on a flashcart but I was also meaning to play through III properly

Kinda related, anyone knows if there's any kinda of zip with a collection of artwork of the world, characters, classes, monsters, etc of the first 3 DQs?

Because I forgot about it. I'd stick it equal to 8.

The first game I played in the series was VIII. I liked it but never finished it - I felt like it was too slow. Later I played IV on the DS and fucking loved how fast the battles felt. V came out and I loved it even more. After that I emulated I thru III on SNES. III was amazing, I was fun and II was just awful. VI was awful too. I tried to play VII but gave up after playing the game for 2 hours without fighting a single battle. IX is amazing and the game I've probably played the most. I've replayed it over and over and spent at least 400 hours in the postgame.

IX = V > III = IV > VIII > I > VI > II > VII

What's up with all the hate for VI and VII? Those two were my favorites of the series, but everyone else thinks they're average at best. Was it really because of length?

>> No.5054641

>>5053485
VI is and was generally considered to be the black sheep of the series. I give you that the reaction to VII is surprising, though. Before the 3DS remake, it was considered among the best but now it seems like a "love it or hate it" entry.

>> No.5055452

I followed a guide that told me I should go with a Warrior Fighter Sage party and that I should start with Fighter Warrior Thief to class change into the others. However, I'm noticing that I have a gaping weakness in my party in that I have no answer for any status issues besides poison.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? I assume a cleric would have solved this issue but I'm already several hours in and I'm "supposed" to stay in this party until lvl 50 where stat growths die off.

Bumping this guy but I also have a different question. I spent some time at the beginning making sure my party spawned with the right personalities. I got to the desert and checked my self and found that every single personality on my party had changed.

My question is what the fuck? How does that happen and what the fuck is the point of books if personalities can just be changed at random?

>> No.5056770

The first one is the first rpg I've ever played and I have fond memories of it, even if it hasn't aged that well. Hated the second one.

Played through 3 and 4 around this time last year for the first time. 3 is legitimately one of the greatest games I have ever played. 4 was good too, but not as great as some people made it out to be.

Tried playing through 5 twice, but some real life issues preventing me from getting further in that. Also, the whole darker tone compared to the rest of the series (like slavery) kinda threw me off, and I hear it gets darker from there. I guess I need to be in the right mood when I eventually play that again. But it was fun from what I've played.

My recommendation to most people is to start on the SNES. Play 5 first. If you like it, play 1+2. Then play 3. Then 6.

This order allows for the progression of development on the system to shine through, while also not playing the original trilogy out of order. As well, if you don't like 5, you probably won't like most of the franchise either, as it is often considered the "best" in the series (my personal favorite is 7).

After 6, play the PS1/DS/Mobile version of 4, then 7 (any version, but I prefer PS1). Play 8, 9, and 11 in order.

In terms of "best", that's really subjective. 3, 5, and 8 all have legitimate claim to being the best, and whichever game is your favorite will probably be the "best" to you (those three are the most popular). The worst are probably 2 and 6, though. 2 grinds to a halt right at the end, and 6 is just kind of mediocre. This is another reason to play them early, as once you get them out of the way, if you're still keen for more, you'll have nothing but good things to look forward to.
