If it doesn't, just run the latest version of the Demiforce hack, which from what I recall, was renamed Earthbound Zero just as a way to differentiate it from the SNES game.

I'm about to finish a playthrough of Mother 2, I was using the last default names, John, Yoko, Paul and George.
It's kind of funny to think of them as the beatles, Poo being George actually makes sense.
I kept mistaking Paul for Paula though, some times Yoko (Paula) died and I wanted to revive her, I wasted PSI trying to revive Paul (Jeff) instead.

I personally would say just play the Earthbound Zero ROM for NES, the encounter rate is kinda high but battles are really quick, like in any other 8bit RPG, it's not really as terrible as people say, but if random encounters bother you so much, then apply the Easy Patch I guess.
Don't play the "Anniversary Romhack" or whatever it's called. It changes its graphics for the worse, takes out the charm of the original game and adds trees that look like blocks.

You should be alright. I always try to avoid the Mooks and Atomic Powered Robots, I just walk off screen and back on. The Starmen teleport around and if you're quick enough you can have them teleport close to you and slip behind them for a first attack and finish them off before they have a chance to attack you. Hit the military octobots with Fire. Finish the boss off with bottle rockets.

No, I thought it was a nice change. Besides, even though the towns in 1 and 2, especially in 2, have a lot of memorable stuff in each of them, some more than others.
Mother 3's only town has more development. By the time you get to chapter 4, where the town actually looks like a classic Mother town, you know everyone there, and know the map already, but everything has been modernized and more complex. That way, I felt the game delivers a classic Mother experience, but in much more depth. You feel at home in Tazmily, whereas Onett is just your starting point and you never go back there again until the end.
I don't think many JRPGs remind me of Mother 3, the only ones are Mother 1 and 2, so I think it still feels like it belongs in its own trilogy.

I don't think anything was wrong with the game at the time per say, but I feel as though if a more SNES-difficulty RPG had come out at the time for the NES (with the graphics of NES etc., no other advantages) then it'd be very popular. Video game RPGs improved when they dropped so much of the outright grinding. I'll also say that Mother 1 is hard even with the 2x EXP translation patch Tomato or whoever put out. I decided to go ahead and start it. I figured I could start by extracing data from MOTHER. First I built an NES graphics viewer since the easiest data to extract is the CHR graphics. Basically here are the things i need to extract:
1. CHR graohics (easy) and tiled graphics data (a bit harder)
2. Music and sfx (music is easy, sfx may be hard)
3. Text data (I'm really not sure the difficulty. I want to start on Japanese version.)
4. Map data (difficulty really depends)
5. Enemy stats, command stats, spells, etc (probably leaning on the easy side)
For some things like CHR data, it is universal across most NES games so I don't need a debugger/disassembler to extract. Other things I will need a debugger/disassembler to understand. Fortunately, tools for NES debugging are very powerful and mature.
For everything else, I need to re-implement:+. Fortunately, MOTHER is not a complicated game.

So I saw the Claus/M1 Giygas (Giegue, whatever) background and it's subtle in the game (but less subtle after seeing the background).
Claus isn't Giygas, but I think there is some sort of parallel between Claus and Giygas.I am bad at explaining but I will do my best:.
In MOTHER, Giygas locks away his heart. He repressed his emotions memories in exchange for hatred so that he can get his revenge after he felt George and Maria betrayed them. When he is reminded of them, he is brought back memories that he had intentionally forgotten, painful memories of love and loss. An emotional vulnerability that he probably hasn't felt in decades. Obviously so painful, that it seems to cause him physical pain and he retreats. He loves and misses his "mother". Obviously, Giygas does not redeem himself as we see in MOTHER 2, but Giygas, despite being the final boss, is not actually that important of a character in MOTHER 2.

In MOTHER 3, Claus' beginnings are a little different. Porky says something like Claus was dead when he found him and he's just a body brought back to life and brainwashed to serve him (further supported when one of the Magypsies says they sense no heart in Claus when he pulls a needle, which is supposed to be a wish that reflects on your heart. Claus didn't intentionally lock away his heart and memories, Porky did that for him. But the way Claus is defeated in MOTHER 3 is the same way Giygas is defeated in MOTHER. Memories of a loving past. Claus starts feeling things that he hasn't felt in years, since Hiwana died. Claus redeems himself by apologizing and hugging Lucas and then leaving to be with his mother. I think Claus kills himself because he feels that 1. if he continued to stay alive, I think his programming would have continued to fight, pulled the needle and destroyed the world and 2. naturally, he was supposed to be dead but he was kept alive by machinery. This plays into the mechanical vs natural thing.

I originally played Earthbound (SNES), followed by Mother 3 (GBA), and then Mother 1 (GBA Mother 1+2 cartridge with translation, it's a lot better than the official translation from Earthbound Zero/Beginnings).

I had heard bad things about Mother 1 but after playing it last I really enjoyed it and wished I had played it first. As far as difficulty and grinding goes, it's pretty damn forgiving for an 8-bit RPG but you'll probably spend more time in battles than a typical 16-bit RPG. If you've played games like the original Dragon Quests, Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy on the NES/Famicom then I recommend Mother 1 first, but I know some people can't get into "primitive" 8-bit RPGs and if you think you're one of those people then start with Earthbound.

Does anyone have the entire Mother 3 video from E3? I think it was either E3 1997 or 1998 but the more common Mother 3 clip from E3 1997/1998 shows the soldiers, Flint being chased by a boar and a Kraken holding a character in its mouth but apparently it leaves out footage of Flint running through Snowcap Mountain.

Not really, just because they are silent doesn't mean they are a carbon copy of the player, this can be seem more subtly than having the character talk which is more obvious then, for example Ness's mom dialogue on how she didn't stop him because she knew he would escape from the window anyway wouldn't apply to all players.

I'm really hurting my brain trying to get this map to draw correctly, but here is a screen grab Southern Podunk (one of the few areas that I got to draw semi-correctly)
The trees and houses are that color because I haven't implemented different palettes yet. Most areas outside of this look like garbage because almost the entire map is using the wrong tileset at the moment

What an excellent game and an excellent translation.
As a topic of discussion, is there anything you'd change about the Mother games?
For Earthbound, aside from improvements to the inventory system, I would make it so that the robots at the end also had personal artifacts. Jeff bot would have the glasses, Paula bot the ribbon, Poo bot either his black hair thing or the karate outfit. It seems odd that Andros would give Ness bot the hat but ignore customizing the bot for his own son.

One more thing I'd add is to adjust difficulty in a few areas. I'm not too against the bit of the grind with Frank, since it gets you familiar with the setting and the combat, but the Department store is balanced around buying bottle rockets and such for Jeff. However, many people are stingy with purchasing consumables in jRPGs aside from basic healing thigns, and even then with healing PSI there's less incentive still.
