It was ambitious but I doubt most gamers were able to appreciate all of it.

>implying anyone has ever seen all of Daggerfall
Its kind of funny that modern gamers literally cannot understand that was the whole point.

youre right!

I think its a great game, its the elder scrolls i play most. if i had to complain legitimately i would have only a few complaints.

1) dungeons (while crazy and fun sometimes) do not fit the scenario 90% of the time. there should have been 3-5 templates for different quest objectives. like, for a manor, actually have it mapped out like a manor, not a multi dimensional death maze. everything is a multi dimensional death maze!

2) alchemy could be done much better! while gathering ingredients becomes rather easy and random... actually making potions takes you to a temple that has a potion maker. the ways i would have made this better, is exactly as morrowind works. you can gather plants from the region or buy them and find them occasionally on specific enemies. and adding a motor pestle/ alembic etc...

3) the UI could use major improvement!

other than that everthing is minor. I do love that Daggerfall tools for unity has been overhauled by being open source to a point. It has made it possible to have the best elders scroll ever made. imagine all the mods that will be made and have been made!

The world was big and empty and boring partly because of limitations of early procgen but mostly on purpose.
It allowed you the transgression of deviating from the main quest while giving you the tedius slog of downtime during adventures to well and truly simulate Tolkien's endless descriptions of grassy hillsides

>> No.5047989

>>5047890
It was procedurally generated shit...once you saw a dungeon and a town, you'd seen everything.

>> No.5048028

>>5047989
Unironically this. It just feels like a massive waste of time to me to do randomly generated quests in randomly generated dungeons.

>> No.5048107

Probably because they intended for there to be more simulation components; lords attacking other lords, armies marching, plagues, traveling merchants, sieges, stuff like that. World-altering events happening dynamically. But it didn't make it, so it's just a huge world.

I still like the game though. Maybe it'll change with Daggerfall Unity mods.

This was one of those "Because we can do it" sort of games that used to be made by developers back when gaming limitations were real.

The game hasn't aged well (obviously) and neither has the strategy (with exceptions, isn't that right, Portal?).

In the end, it simply makes Morrowind look all the more better.

Is it viable to play a character with plate armor restriction? I'm scared i'll hit a wall later in the game.

>> No.5052108

By the time armor class would actually matter, the only stuff that can really hurt you is magic, anyway. It's fine.

I also hope that the Unity project will allow some more features to be added to that huge game world. As it is, at least the huge game world helps to provide the game with some of its tremendous atmosphere. Daggerfall really makes you feel like one man in the midst of an enormous world.

I think the point about dungeon design is especially pertinent. They all basically look the same despite being called Towers, Laboratory, Ruins or whatever. Merely the texture differs depending upon the area you're in, and the creatures vary according to the name of the dungeon. It would be cool to explore an actual manor, and maybe one that isn't based entirely around combat but the more non-combative skills.

They might have been able to do that once oblivion rolled around but Todd went and did the fucking moronic decision of making sure that they could also build it around console limitations. And Bethesda games have been thoroughly neutered in terms of advancement and complexity ever since

I once tried to map Daggerfall to an Xbox 360 controller just for the hell of it. It's im-fucking-possible. The control scheme makes use of so much of the keyboard, there'd be no way to have it remotely playable on a console without going into the game and adding some sort of multi-tier action wheel ala Temple of Elemental Evil, which would make the game even more cumbersome to play.

That's not an excuse for what they did, though, unless you count the general IQ of the expected audience as a limitation. By that I mean that Elder Scrolls games after Morrowind are designed for (and possibly by) stupid people.
