Apparently it's impossible to find a non-shitty screenshot of it, but that 'boss' in Breath of Fire 2, where it's the old man fused with the gross demonic machine, and he begs you to kill him.

Before I knew you could save him by just killing the machine, I totally put him out of his misery. Felt horrible. Twisted even.

And I also fucked myself out of having the flying town later on, which I didn't learn for a long time. I was a dumb kid sometimes.

Thunder Force IV (pic related) has some really cool looking bosses and just design all around, not to mention the soundtrack. There's no way to justify how awesome bosses and shit are, you just have to play the game.

I love the silliness of Parodius and Sexy Parodius. Enough said.

I need to give a shout out to Bio-Hazard Battle, which has some of the most unique and weirdest overall designs I've seen in a sidescroller. Pretty much everything is alive in a sense your ship and the enemies aren't constructed metal aircraft, but instead biologically engineered living weapons.

Shortly after getting the internet in 2001, I found out that shooters were considered an actual genre of game.

In the research that followed (which was really just me spending entire afternoons reading about all these fuck-awesome games like Radiant Silvergun and Xexex) I came across what was the most disturbing end game boss I had ever seen.

I actually beat the final boss the first time I encountered him, which was a little disappointing. Basically, I made sure to have POW and two ninjutsus when I faced him, so I just used the lightning one twice which enabled me to keep my fireballs for a really long time. I kind of wish they had put in some precaution against that, like maybe making POW less effective against him than against the other bosses.

Pretty much any boss in a Metal Slug.
Zog, Jade, and Tyr from Breath of Fire.
Kraid in Super Metroid after he stands the fuck up. Novelty goes away when you then kill him a few seconds later.
The Mothership in R-Type Final, which was one of those the entire stage is the boss fight deals.
