Anyone played this? It's a survival horror JRPG. The SNES version recently got a completed translation patch. The same people behind Clock Tower made it.

The horror part of the game lies in the exploration of the fictional Weathertop Mansion, whose owner dabbled in black magic. The game's CRPG features include its character classes—Dilettante, Medium, Detective, Scientist, and Journalist—and that the player can leave the mansion to walk around the town to go to shops to buy items needed to defeat the monsters and complete the game.

I only played about half an hour of it. It's a little clunky, and I keep dying because I'm shit at stocking up. It feels almost like a topdown Wizardry-lite.

Years ago, I played the old/busted translation out of desperation. I really got into the game and spent HOURS grinding those haunted door enemies for the money (taking FUCK LOADS of photos with my journalist) and the exp. I mean, hours and hours. I got pretty far, I think, and then something happened and corrupted my save file and I was so upset I just quit.
I liked the story quite a bit and, aside from grinding, found the game play fun. I'd like to try it again and I didn't know there was a complete translation out. Thanks, OP. Now's the time.

I prefer playing as a PI or a Dabbler. PI has a pretty good Investigation skill, like the Journalist, so will find more stuff (items, clues).
Investing in the Medicine skill is good to give the Journalist more utility.

I'm also fond of the Scientist, although I haven't started as one. I always have one in my party, and a shitload of batteries to go with him.

There is not a whole lot of stuff to buy, so you can take the Journalist at the beginning for a bit and then around level 2, only take the Journalist in when you need to refill your coffers.

Since you can change up who is in your party at the hotel, you can easily experiment with parties. I usually switch the Journalist for a Dabbler after I make a bit of money, taking along a Scientist and a Medium.

I'd love it if you leave an archive of it. My schedule doesn't do well for live streams but sure would love to see how other people is playing.

I'm not very far in, and I find it a bit disingenuous to call it "like Sweet Home" because you never seem to be as inventory-constricted, since you can always go back for more ammo and batteries and film, so it feels a lot less "survival-ish", but it's a pretty interesting game nonetheless.
The only thing I don't like is that I find myself just speeding over tons of combats while holding A, not much strategy involved, sadly. At least so far.
Still the setting and general mood are fairly nice so I'll probably keep going just for that.

While the game has, like the tripfag said, tedious bits (like having to backtrack to a room to refill an oil lamp way too often if you want the best ending), it's still a game I enjoyed because it's unique. Not a game you'll tell your grand kids about, but still an overlooked game. So yes, I'd recommend the game; just try it for two hours: don't get mad if you can't shoot the bats because you have no crosshair, reach the castle, and see for yourself.

Back on Laplace No Ma, it's time for a fun-fact: the PC-88 version is actually in first person, so there's a cool dungeon crawler feeling to it!
