Gremlins 2 has the best graphics the NES ever saw.

Even during its prime NES was never really known for great graphics. Arcade games were always superior. What made the NES such a big hit was the speed, responsiveness and the kind of games you could play on it for a home console.

I think the Mega Man games have the best graphics cuz of the cool palette-cycling stuff and good spritework.

Yeah, that is pretty cool, especially for a licensed title. Shame they didn't use the music from the movie, though.

Shouldn't have invoked demos, because while it obviously isn't a fair comparison demos blow the fuck out of that.

This is shitbrained thinking. You're looking at the NES from a 2018 persepctive. When it was released in 1983 it blew everyone's minds, but you wouldn't know that because you were probably born in 1998.

Fag, Megaman 1's graphics caused a fucking revolution back then thanks to Capcom's programming tricks that allowed the console to display sprites with more than just 3 colors.

Yeah exactly, "for a home console." What actually blew peoples minds was how fun it was to play the games like Mario and Megaman. They were fast and dynamic, with side-scrolling and platforms and top-down maps scrolling. They had multiple different types animated sprites on the screen all at the same time. Plus you had major advances in audio as well.

Compare to the NES, Atari was a joke, with static screens and slow-moving sprites and bleep-bloop music. Also, lots of videogames were played on Home Computers like the TRS-80 and Commodore 64, which had much graphics than the Atari.
>>5038032
Maybe for industry nerds. All those of us who were actually alive in the 80s cared about was how awesome the games were. The graphics enabled the great games. Nobody sat there and just admired the graphics, which is worth mentioning only because that's exactly what people fucking did when the next-gen consoles came out. People often made a point to praise Sonic's amazing graphics in a way that no one ever did for any game during the 8-bit generation.

Even with all composite crt filter tricks the NES still is extremly ugly. So ranking something is crowning the best of the worst. NES graphics are abysmal and trash. And don't get me started on new games like immitating those shit stool pungent graphics. Yacht club games is a group of stupid lazy assholes and can go fuck themself.

God, shut up, you pretentious twat. Of course people cared about graphics, they always have. Talking about what games looked like, or gushing over screenshots in magazines and catalogs was very much a part of my Childhood in the 80's™, just as it was for many other kids. This was even true in the fucking arcades. The actual gameplay was what got you hooked, but what attracted you in the first place were the superficialities, like sound, graphics or outlandish cabinet designs. This was never *not* a thing. Never.

hah you faggots are so mad holy shit. 8-bit graphics sucked and always sucked. Ok sure yes I'm not saying no one ever appreciated any artwork on the NES ever, but the system in general was just not that impressive, graphically speaking. Arcade games all had far better graphics and often the home console games were literally pale imitations of those graphics, like Altered Beast on the Master System.

People knew that when they played and rated the graphics accordingly.

There can be a certain nostalgia appeal to them, as well as the angle of making a game that's fun to play regardless of the shit graphics. The NES is known for having a good library of platformers and if you're planning to imitate the gameplay of a NES-era game like Ducktales, using the 8-bit aesthetic can be a reasonable choice. It helps signal what the game will be like.

Megaman 9 and 10 are another good example that also used the throwback style specifically because those games were "what if we went back to 1989 and made some Megaman games that people would still like to play today?" They wanted to use the exact same physics and approach to content design, so they used the classic graphics to emphasize what they were doing. It helps that Megaman is one of the most well-designed NES games from a graphical standpoint.

Meanwhile, games like Dustforce or Limbo don't imitate 8-bit gameplay, so don't imitate the art style.
