So this guy showcased the potential of new VR technology being used on a potentially huge backlog of retro games through use of various hacks and workarounds.

Just thought it might be cool to discuss in /vr/ how VR can help provide new perspectives on older titles. He showcases F Zero GX and Ocarina of Time as examples by that timestamp. He also showcases both first person and third person games before it, like Morrowind and Metroid Prime.

>> No.5033260

You are such piece of shit anon.
He "showcased" that a Dolphin fork as VR support.
And because Dolphin is Wii + Gamecube that means all of Dolphins Virtual Console games or game collections like Master Quest.
So basically its pretty great
At the least play Path of Neo and Enter the Matrix

They really do need to put more funding into mental health,

This board is a testament to that, retro gaming is not a healthy hobby for some people.

Trinus PSVR is an absolute piece of shit. I spent hours trying to get the thing working, then after many frustrating attempts of plugging/unplugging under different configurations of software settings, it finally works, then locks the PC out from continuing because it's a trial. Bought the full version, then suddenly it stops working again.

This brings me to a question I keep thinking recently. Is it just me or is software generally a lot more shitty and unstable than it was back in the 2000s, awkward system setups aside?

ITT: 30 yo cringelord gets his first VR headset in 2018. Wew lad. Don't see what this has to do with any "backlog". Does anyone refuse to play a game because it's not VR?

I am in the process of playing Chrono Cross again. I am going to quit right now until I have support from Squaresoft & sony. My uncle works for nintendo, and said that Nintendo is skipping this tech, and their next thing will actually put you inside of the game. Imagine being Link, and your little brother erases the save.....Because that is how it happened to Hendrix.

But seriously, Chrono Cross and other PSX era JPGs would look amazing in VR. World maps and battles would be pretty neat.

VR will make JRPG turn-based battles even more hellishly boring by making you feel trapped inside them.

Metroid Prime in Dolphin VR is still the single most mind blowing gaming experience I have ever had. It really feels like it was always meant to be played in VR

I know you are fucking around but first person Zelda is actually a possibility now, they are still using ideas from ocarina of time development like open world, they are probably going to experiment with first person for the next game.

>> No.5033748

So is this actually good for CRT emulation? You can actually simulate distance with the screen so it makes sense.

>>5033714
The gameplay has the exact speed to it to function well in VR, hope it gets imitated.

The one caveat the guy in the video mentions is that apparently you can't freelook with your head? That you still need to rotate the weapon to the edge of the screen to turn around

Dolphin has already kind of supported it for a while. It's not really anything amazing or technologically challenging to accomplish. That said, it's straight up shit in most games because they weren't designed for VR at all. Things that weren't meant to be seen with the original camera system usually don't even exist, and 2D shit gets really glitchy. Mapping head movements directly to the camera just breaks most games since the camera wasn't designed to be moved by anything besides the analog stick with severe restrictions.

Even in the few games where it does work, it's not really that interesting. Most of these worlds are extremely low resolutions with nothing of interest. It might look okay from a camera 30 feet behind your character, but in first person it becomes very clear that you're just walking on a boring textured plane.

>> No.5033779

>>5033714
That's an example of a game that almost works but is just too damn glitchy to tolerate a play through. If someone actually spent the time to mod the game to play well with VR it has the potential to be great, though.

Divergence vs convergence.

>>5033750

No, you can. That problem is only in Metroid Prime 3 and there's a disable code for it.

>> No.5033815

>>5033779

You don't have to mod it, you just have to know which AR patches to enable and which gameshark codes to apply in the per-game tweaks menu.

It's actually fine. Assuming you're using a regular Oculus or Vive, you should be able to watch up to 480p video just fine before the sde kicks you in the balls. An old 240p crt is perfectly okay with current vr hardware.

You sort of can in NRA. Everything looks like a SNES cart though, and the console was redesigned to be a generic one to avoid copyright issues. Console emulation is also kinda garbage, it was really meant as a MAME frontend.

This is still under development though, and is looking great. You can even fuck about with the video cables now.
