why aren't there more horror-RPG hybrids out there?

it feels like the first Parasite Eve was the only one of its kind to have ever been made. it struck this perfect balance of just enough of each genre to bring out each other's strengths.

I've been searching for other kinds of games but typically they tend to lean more in one genre than the other... unable to find that pitch perfect balance of both that Parasite Eve 1 had.

Parasite Eve is a full package cinematic action rpg survival horror game. It is basically a full package of everything you want in a game stripped of everything impeding the conceptualization of it.

To improve upon it now you could only think of like, making it more real time, updating the graphics, adding voices and mocap

the cinematography of the scenes in the in game engine, considering what it was dealing with, is fucking spot on and fantastic, Who doesn't remember Darryl serving Klamp that haymaker right to his smug little face

maybe Parasite Eve is the best game of the 5th gen

>maybe Parasite Eve is the best game of the 5th gen

i wonder is the game was ahead of its time... possibly ahead of our time now.

Parasite Eve has so much going on in it that similar cinematic games today just fail to have the same depth in terms of gameplay. i really believe the RPG elements really helped give the game its legs and the survival horror mechanics and ambience make it stand out even more.

the closest thing i can think of is maybe Koudelka, a much more rough game around the edges... which also came out during the same gen as PE. yeah... still not much out there.

the only flaws i can get out of PE is some minor things like Aya's running speed being maybe half as fast as it should be, and some really barebones UI that looks like a programmer threw it together. maybe some pacing issues in some spots, but generally i find PE to be one of the most repayable and enjoyable games on the PS1.

even today i still cant find anything else that can scratch the same itch.

Fuck's sake, this. Her walking speed is useless. This is why I like to replay the game on emulator so that I can frameskip her up to a reasonable speed when wandering large dungeons. Otherwise, yeah. It's just a solid game.

this is one of the only jrpgs i really liked. i played thru earthbound, mother 3, and chrono trigger but I’ve dropped every final fantasy game I’ve tried. Ffvii was cool but I lost my save from my old computer blowing up and just never picked it back up, don’t know if i ever will

i think my problem was trying to play “the best” jrpgs all one after another, the genre is alright but now i know i gotta space them out if i don’t want to get burned out on them. but parasite eve really stuck out to me and i would consider it one of my favorite games

Corpse Party and lots of other RPG Maker horror games will have you playing games that fit in that particular notch for a while. There are lots and lots of Western horror adventure games but they don't really have XP and stat based combat if you need that. On the other side of retro, you should really give D2 a spin it's great.

>Koudelka

I was going to bring this up when I saw this thread. I recently finished this game and was really impressed. The English VA work is still better than 9/10ths of the RPGs that have been released since. It has fantastic atmosphere although it's so dark you can barely see anything and movement can be difficult at times, although it fits the gothic horror vibe. I wonder how it would have turned out if Kikuta had managed to make it more actiony the way he had wanted.

And I really loved how after a huge build up you don't even fight the big bad guy, you just discover his corpse. And then he later appears as part of an easy monster plant fight.

The Longing Ribbon has combat but neither has XPs so I suppose they fail my usual "is it an rpg" test. As anon pointed out, it's hard to balance progression and maintain the "horror" atmosphere. If it were me, I'd just make it extra hard but I think a lot of the RPG makers worry that if it's too hard, then fewer people will see the story they worked so hard on. There really are tons and tons of these games though so with a little patience you can find ones that strike a balance you're looking for.
