How did you guys get introduced to Doom? For me it was my Dad who had it on his computer around 1994. We'd make a game of it how far we could get before being slaughtered. We did it so often he figured that we could give Doom II a try and we got our asses kicked the first time around.

Was the registered version of Doom a total embarassment?

>two episodes of ugly, flat, boring levels

I wish they should have released Doom 2 after Knee Deep in the Dead to avoid embarassment.

It was 1993, I was six years old.

Dad came home from work one day and said the whole office had jammed up the network playing a Doom and that he'd never seen anything like it. Over the next week he kept telling me how great Doom was.

At that point the only PC we had was an old 286 that would have never been enough for Doom.

I remember him building a PC on the kitchen table soon after, a 486. Looking back, it must have cost him almost month's salary - and it didn't even have a soundcard. He let me screw the hard drive and CD drives into the case for him. Doom was one of very first things we installed, and even with no music and just the PC Speaker beepboops it was still amazing. He used to let me play it sitting in his lap.

He's in his 60's now, and sadly suffering from early dementia and heart problems. He struggles to remember anything for more than a day or two, can't figure out which way his shirt is supposed to go on or how to tie his shoelaces, but if I mention Doom to him, he will hum the entire main guitar riff of this:

I think I was like 7 or something, back in the late 90's. My brother had a friend over one day, and they were playing a new game, Doom 2.
I had seen Quake 2 before, and it was cool, but this game Doom, it was much more violent, much more dark, much more detailed, it had a cooler style. The 3D models in Quake 2 were impressive, sure, but the sprites in Doom were mindblowing to me, many of the monsters had photorealistic shading, the Spider Mastermind looked so real in comparison to the monsters in Quake 2, and the guns as well. It was the first time I had seen a videogame with digitized photo graphics.

Now, he didn't want to let me play it, I complained to my mom like the little shit I was, etc, and there was arguing "Doom is worse than Quake, it's too violent and scary", etc.
I wouldn't let the issue go though, I was a kid who was big into Starcraft, and more importantly, Diablo, violent games, Diablo being especially dark and full of terrifying monsters. I loved that kind of stuff, even if it maybe gave me a nightmare or two sometimes.
I finally managed to reach a middleground with my brother, and he would let me play Doom 2 with a (very old) version of "Simpsons Doom", which of course replaced the monsters with (somewhat crude) depictions of characters from the Simpsons (Barney replaced the Pinky, his sight sound being https://youtu.be/Johmlmq-dRUt35 and his attack sound burps, etc), and you played as Homer, making his various screams, yelps and shouts as he was hurt.
Of course this made it less scary and somewhat less violent, and I thought it was funny, but I still wanted to play the real thing, which I eventually would.

See, the fun part about Hideous Destructor is that it makes the effort to have the monsters all be real fucking cunts to deal with.
The idea is to have monsters which could realistically destroy a squad of soldiers, compare to the original game, where the monsters are mostly kind of dumb and can only do a few things each, and some of them are pretty slow.

The reward is to defeat very rough odds, and an important part about HD is that to enjoy it, you should throw basically all the rules out the window, forget about playing fair or staying in map sequence, your goal is to survive and make it to the exit, by any means necessary.
The sooner you realize there are no rules, the sooner you can succeed.
Do you go through that monster gauntlet which surely awaits behind that door, to go around and get that key up on that ledge, or do you just climb up the ledge (perhaps with a ladder), grab the key, and skip that combat?
Do you play through the entire map, or do you crawl through a low window and skip half of it?
Do you make the effort to fight an arch-vile until he dies, or do you just fight him off and hope you can keep him away until you reach the exit? There's rewards and consequences to both choices.

There's one *IF*, however; some maps are not even remotely easy, or even feasible, to play, that's something to assess; is this a level which I could realistically face, without obscene trial of error, or even at all? Most people will not have the patience for playing it with Alien Vendetta, for instance, some of the levels are particularly cruel to the player in Hideous Destructor.
It's a very acquired taste of gameplay, but for certain types of people it appeals to, it's very good.

Doom gets by on it's strong fundament and simplicity, as well as being super easy to mod.
It works on all the basic levels and it's accessible in many different ways.
The more nuanced gameplay comes up more in Final Doom and later pwads, where there's much more creative enemy encounters to challenge the player.

Quake does deserve better though.

>>5026669
Across the board, the levels in the first two games are solid. Not excellent, there's some pretty good maps, but also some which maybe aren't so good.
Just picking up the game and playing it, they work alright.

Of the official iwads, I think Final Doom is kind of stronger than the base games, in most aspects, but I absolutely agree that pwads have long surpassed the original levels. Doom is fun, but pwads can make it so much more exciting.

It's kinda interesting that in the case of Duke Nukem 3D and the other Build games the stock levels like Dark Side or Derelict are still better benchmarks than user content. What eventually helped Doom didn't make Duke a favour.

Honestly, the ZM66 rifles are all over the place, you might as well treat them as disposable.
If you feel yours is giving you too much trouble, throw it away and pick up a new one, you have nothing to lose.

If you want to just skip the headaches of the ZM66, try out the Vulcanette, it will just eat from 'bootleg' magazines with extremely little issue, and it will never overheat. It's heavy and needs a battery, but the low RPM is easy to control and problem free, while the high RPM is like shooting a chainsaw, you can decimate a hellknight or even baron of hell if you can keep the thing on target, and you can absolutely sweep a group of enemies in an emergency.

I was born in the year 2000. My dad was a huge fan of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. He played it constantly. I was introduced to that first then I moved on to Doom and Quake by myself later when I was like seven or eight.
I remember very distinctly sitting on my dad's knee holding down the use key to complete objectives like draining passageways on those old Wolf ET maps. The sounds of the ladders, wrenches, and the tweezers are burned into my memory from that game. I didn't even know there were guns in Wolf: ET. My dad told me it was a "building game"

When i first played Doom it was a flash port. I was never actually allowed to play a game with guns and shooting. So naturally Doom changed how my brain worked on so many levels. The guitar riffs, chainsaw, shotgun... it just changed me on a huge level and I have loved Doom ever since that time.

Sometimes it still kinda shocks me that I'm one of the youngest people here. I started posting here when I was 16 and now I'm 18.

Doom fags also like shitting on PWADs and especially gameplay mods (like Brutal Doom), it became a trend here. But since the original campaigns were so garbage, while the game has so huge capabilities, it's inevitable that user content gets more focus.

It's actually interesting that people compare Allen Blum to Levelord or Bob Travis and their unique design in Build threads. Okay /vr/, let's make this thread a little happier. What are some of your favorite maps, and favorite parts of them? For me, it's Freedoom 0.4 through 0.8's Map30. It's a four-sectioned map that's a love letter to every individual theme of Doom 1, starting with a tech base, into ceremonial ruins, into a fleshy mass, and then finally, the stone maw of hell.

Full encumbrance. Every single item you carry on your person is counted towards your total, displayed in the bottom-left corner of the full HUD. Weapons weigh slightly less when selected than when in storage.
>yes
One man army encumbrance. Only your currently selected weapon, inventory items, and all relevant ammo (including ammo used by your inventory items) are counted towards encumbrance.
>weapon only
Only counts your currently selected weapon towards encumbrance. All ammo and inventory items, excepting the backpack and any ammo loaded in your selected weapon, are weightless.

Backpack is unaffected by the setting, it weighs 100 units on its own but reduces the weight of everything stored in it by 50%. On full encumbrance, you want to stuff as much as you can in it, on one man army it's something to consider against keeping things on your person, and on weapon only it's basically just bonus inventory space.

Personally, I play on weapon only for solo play and full encumbrance for multiplayer. One man army's rules never really sat right with me.

movement in the main dungeon is slowed, and returns to normal in "combat arenas" where all fighting takes place. essentially each time the player crosses a sector line on the grid, they gain an inventory item that increases a counter for a random encounter, like how each step increases the threat level in the EO. Once the count maxes, the player is teleported into an arena where they fight enemies, and after the enemies are all defeated a teleporter opens and lets them return to the dungeon, refreshing their threat level, and returning to the "crawling" control speed.
FOEs will be wandering around the dungeon, and will force encounters on contact with the player. I'd like to put in advanced functions like having them only move when the player does, or teleporting in to join random encounters, but I havent figured out that one yet and I'm actually a hot garbage mapper so its taking some time to learn how to script these things properly.

I saw the full version being demoed at a local computer store back in 1993. I was blown away. I distinctly remember the level. It was E2M2.

The guy playing was at the 3 round lifts area (bottom left of attached image) and had a chainsaw.

I was a huge Wolf3D fan and grabbed a shareware floppy of the game ASAP. My PC was a 386 with, I think, 2 megs of ram and an 80MB hard drive. It struggled with DOOM, but I didn't care. I was hooked.

Maybe, although the gameplay seems slower than the Doom 4 we got. Although I like the idea of a Hell invaded Earth we see in Doom Eternal, I think the way it's portrayed here doesn't really fit well with what I know about Doom, like if I didn't know it was Doom I'd think it was just some Metro 2033 type post-apocalyptic game.

My brother netplayed with his friend probably 96-97 when I was 4. The game absolutely terrified me as a child and I ran to my room and plugged my ears so I wouldn't be able to hear the music because it haunted me. I can still remember the starting area of e1m2 on the screen.

Later on I stopped being scared of it, but didn't really get interested until 2016 when I saw a streamer playing ancient aliens map24 and I've listened to that soundtrack on and off ever since. in 2018 I finally ran through the original games, hexen, heretic, and doom 4 after picking them up on steam. It felt good to crush the demons after being scared of them in my childhood.

You see, this is the sort of thing consisting of ultimate terror. Just the mere viewing of such image should make you feel very uneasy. You have a set of very aloof eyes staring directly into your soul. It's a very uncanny sight, considering we've all had to take on the pain of Christoph's endless rejection and torment. It hurts enough just as it is. This is, at heart, the cruel punishment one can receive for having the audacity to make another split-screen multiplayer feature suggestion. It has literally been since 2004 that we have longed for such a feature. All of you should truly begin to understand that it has always meant so much to me to have what would seem like such an essential feature implemented in the source port! I've been waiting for something to change over the years. I've been waiting for that odious, heartless anomaly of a German to do something other than disappoint me in all the years and counting. It almost felt like I had a panic attack seeing this edit. It seems trauma has developed from the constant struggle over the years. While the whole lilith.pk3 controversy was happening last year, I was genuinely somewhat relieved to see him visibly in distress. It felt like for once, he could understand what it's like to experience any real form of displeasure. It had him so bothered that he went speechless for an entire month. It had the forum owner preemptively formulating a plan contingent upon him never returning! That's just how bad it was, and I was sitting back, hoping he never would. How sorely wrong I was. He's back, and so is my constant fear of his everlasting letdowns.

What are my alternatives regarding sourceports, since I can't use GzDoom, focusing on gameplay mods? Am I stuck with PrBoom? If so, what are the mods I can play using PrBoom?

For the primary fire, you have to hold the beam in one place, typically a wall or the floor, for a second or two and the gun trigger an explosion there.
If you want to fry something directly, hit altfire or firemode to activate the "hacked" mode. It causes the beam to deal a ton more damage, but it's less effencient with the battery, and you don't get the explosion. also good for burning corpses.

This basically.

However up until GZ 3.25 you could delete your configuration file, and on the first-load dialog box that will come up you select Software rendering instead of hardware.

I think the hardware rendering on lesser video cards, which more advanced games than this could run for years, was discontinued like way back in GZ 1.8 or something like that. Which means it wont be compatible with any mods (except maybe Dimensions Of The Boomed?), but you could still play it and get hardware mode working.

It wasn't really mainstream, it was this weird edgy mix between space opera and cyberpunk. I think it only really became 'mainstream' around Quake 4.

If you ask me, I wish they have found some kind of middle ground between cyberpunk aliens and lovecraft stuff. Like, what if the Strogg worshipped Shub-Niggurath, and Shub Niggurath was all about unholy eldritch fusion of flesh and metal? That could be cool, and itd make both Shubbie and Stroggs more fleshed out and interesting instead of generic evil.

C: while in the backpack menu, press the "drop weapon" button.

It does help (even if it's not needed) to show that BD's entire concept isn't new or interesting.
The mod not having an actual identity is probably why it's currently feature bloated, while Mark's other mods feel like BD spin offs.
On top of that, most other modders try to explore different ideas and areas, to make their track records more interested.

Doom 4 felt a lot like Painkiller in terms of enemy waves.
It wasn't anything special in terms of level design but at least it had far more variety than this.

I do think MetaDoom deserves some recognition for possibly being Doom's best tribute and being somewhere close to Smash and MGS4, when it comes to details and fanservice
But the fact that it touches more obscure material and how it tries to be non faithfull at times might be an hard sell for journos
If a lot of big gaming YT channels and sites refuse to know there's more than 4 Doom games, they sure won't give a shit about a holy water pistol
Which means MetaDoom highlights that they never truly liked Doom enough to even know basic shit about the series

Outside of BD,his track record is just lame.
One may say "better one good thing that 100 mediocre ones".
ALL is projects revolve around Brutal Doom, all the others are incomplete.

All his map wads other than Extermination Day/Hell on Earth are discontinued.
Other mods want to keep the variety and prove what the community is capable of.
Always fresh of new ideas.

Brutal Doom feels like the Star Wars special editons with the original trilogy.
They keep adding more useless and pointless stuff that creates nothing but an inconsistent, bloated mess that removes what made the thing good to begin with.

It's up to interpretation whether it was a portal or death.

Seriously, gamers are the WORST about games with ambiguous plots/endings that are up to interpretation. Everything has to be 100% decided so you can write it down in a wiki. Look what they've done with the ending of MGS2 for fucks sake.

If you ask me, that 'wiki knowledge' is the reason why games aren't respected as an artform, because you can't make anything really artistic in this medium.

64 story aligns perfectly fine. Years after the invasion one demon (Motherdemon) slipped past, resurrected a bunch of demons, shit happens. In the end you kill the Motherdemon and stay behind in Hell. It only doesn't align IF you try to consider Final Doom canon, but it was just officially released mods.

In fact, if we believe Doomslayer is the Doomguy, then the story continues straight from 64.

Have you seen some of the maps in his map packs? Some of them are basically just freedoom maps (the really 90's looking old ones from 0.5 and below) but needlessly KDiZD-ified. Mark does not know anything about doom and it shows in his mapping, and in his mod design. It just feels so stale and wrong. I can understand wanting to make a new spin on Doom's gameplay, or a different kind of FPS entirely, but Brutal Doom is trying to be Doom with a new twist, but instead it just feels like a budget shooter you find on steam. It's his metaphorical cash cow though, so if he doesn't milk it he'll just be irrelevant.
