Working Designs.

I liked the voices in Lunar. Ghaleon's voice particularly.

>> No.5027737

Fuck you guys, Lunar 2 was great. Shitty pop culture references and all. Using your skill points or whatever to save was also a good idea because it prevented save scumming in a game where you can save literally anywhere. As long as you didn't save after every fucking battle the cost was negligible as well. not even being ironic.

I get the outrage and it’s all justifiable to me and all, but a group of buddies working on translating Japanese games and fucking around with things to reflect their in jokes and sense of humor is kinda comfy to me. Like a video game version of William Street’s stuff( the guys behind Space Ghost: coast to coast, Harvey birdman, sealab 2021, and countless other adult swim originals)

all said and done Alundra is still an awesome game. When I think back I remember the adventuring, puzzles, dungeons, and bleakness of the story. Some guy named Boner who smoked weed doesn't take from what I enjoy about the game.

Same goes for Lunar. Granted I was around 12 or whatever when the PS1 version came out so it really really hit me in the sweet spot. I appreciate the SegaCD version more now as an adult. Not sure how I feel about the GBA and PSP versions though.

There never was a localization, what you thought was Eternal Blue is actually some cringey fanfic made by stoners who like poop jokes. I get having nostalgia for it if you were punked by it as a dumb kid but there is no excuse for it in 2018, the original is right there sitting next to it in any romset.

>>5027737
If it was such a necessary change then why did wrecking designs themselves backtrack on it in the remake while admitting it was more frustrating than challenging? Their whole motivation was to slow down progress in order to jew children into buying the game instead of renting.

Who the fuck rented Sega cd games? Are you like 12? You couldn't even get lunar at bug box stores. You had to order it or get it at a small store in the mall. And you think a major rental chain was renting it? And wd purposely made the game harder to prevent renting? Get that shut out of my face. You probably weren't even alive yet.

Eh, old JRPGs are not some masterpieces. When it comes to translations what Working Designs did was for the best. Look at Lunar, it was retranslated at least 2 times and none of those versions managed to capture new audience while the WD localizations remain cult classics.

None of the sexual jokes are there, I can confirm. And the Japanese would NEVER EVER EVER accept political jokes in children's entertainment, they are strongly opposed to that as a culture since most of the political satire is considered conspiracies by communist zainichi koreans.

>> No.5031845

Why is this style of goofy meme-laden and self-deprecating "localization" only acceptable in America? This discussion doesn't even exist regarding other regions where games are translated in the same way as any other media. Most non-burger translators have respect for the original work and for the eventual player as well. Inserting your own jokes into the script would be as absurd as adding your own thoughts into a translated novel.
Seems like a problem with degenerate American culture that quells from anything played straight. You see the same thing in capeshit humor as well.

After reading the development notes in the rayearth book and owning both lunar special editions, even with the weird nerfing that was added to the gameplay, I tip my hat to wd because dammit, it shows that they were trying to put out things that people would appreciate. Haters are just upset they can't afford any of the games because they are all expensive now. Like others said, localize your own damn rpgs, and release them with foil covers and disc variants and special editions, things we didn't get at all in the 5th gen outside of working designs. Long after the fact you can sure nitpick, but they were trying, and if I could talk to any of them on twitter I would for sure say thanks.

>> No.5031908

correct, this is the original dialogue

>Lemina:
>「金のなる木」は売ってないの?
>Do you sell a "tree that grows gold"?
>Shopkeeper:
>‥‥おじょうさん そんなもの あったら わたしがほしいですよ
>...Miss, if something like that exists, I want it.

for the uninitiated, the us version turned this into

>Lemina:
>I'D RATHER HAVE A BEAUTIFUL 1000S COIN, CAN YOU ARRANGE THAT, TOO?
>Shopkeeper:
>GIRLIE, IF I WERE IN THE POSITION TO THROW AWAY CASH ON BUMS, YOU'D CALL ME CLINTON AND I'D BE PRESIDENT.

imagine this repeated for 1000 npcs and you have a working designs game

There was a german translator for nintendo who inserted adult jokes (about condoms) tons of political and pop culture references ... it caused a zelda game to be retranslated under his tenure because people complained loudly enough it went national news, a pokemon boycott as people bought it in english instead, and he got fired. In Wolfenstein's case, even the censor board complains about translation changes.

the frenchies accept changing names (they write Putin as Poutine because it flows better, and doesn't sound like bitch) and are really allergic to typos and english names for concepts left as is, or badly translated. Mess with the story or insert yourself in the writing though? you won't get a pass. just go and check how many times games are fan patched to french despite official locs, because of minor nitpicks.

non american audiences are much more likely to throw a fit when stuff they pay for gets subpar treatment.

Didn't know about Brazil or whatever they do there, it would make sense though, maybe this phenomenon is common to all mixed-race favela monkey drug dens with dysfunctional governments? So answer the question, why do American "localizers" continually insist they can write a better script than the developers, as WD have outright bragged, despite all evidence to the contrary, and when criticized switch to denigrating the original work and saying it was all trash worth no one's time anyway? Seems like they could make their own games, but of course that's much harder than making a quick buck shitting in mouths of dumb kids who think they got something special with their foil covers and full colour manuals filled with blatant lies.
