I never got why the game was barely playable despite all the effort put into it and being made by Konami, until I read on the Internet that the Japanese version was actually fine and that they added the retarded difficulty in the Western version.

Try adventure island 3 if you like tough as nails platformers. The game pulls some cheap shots though. They encourage the player to move swiftly through the levels, but then occasionally will throw an enemy unexpected enemy at you. Fortunately these aren't random and you can (or rather, you must) memorize where they are. You will need lightning fast reflexes to stand any shot at getting even halfway through it.
