It's a weird game, plays like an adventure game but is also a strategy game. French developers had a different way of doing things, I guess.

It's kinda funy how Dune 2 is much harder to get into compared to 1, since it feels so primitive even compared to something like C&C, let alone later RTS. The first Dune is a totally unique experience, everyone on /vr/ should give it a spin.

I didn't like it and is the reason I didn't continue with the series. I was fine with the time jump, new emphasis on Duncan, and political/theological philosophy but it's just boring. Messiah and Children start off boring too but God emperor is the first one not to pull it out and deliver the goods.

It’s probably boring because it’s heavy on internal action and basically experimental in form. I liked how the Messiah slowed down the pace but the Children is the weak entry for me.

My college roommate and I theorized that the reason GEoD is so boring compared to the other books is because it's told primarily through the viewpoint of a prescient 4000 year old being. Everything would be boring as fuck after 4000 years if you could also see the future. It's why even when Duncan clones try to kill him he usually describes the events as tedious. In the other books an attack with lasguns and bombs would be sweet but Leto's seen it hundreds of times already and it's boring as fuck to him.

Yeah, its not like Westwood helped define the genre with Dune 2 and C&C or anything.

I hate reading. Non-fiction is ok, you can learn so much from non-fiction. But I'm not particularly fond of the process, I just know it's good for me. I forceread plenty of fiction books in my teens and 20s and got such minimal enjoyment out of it. I am just not a fiction reader.

Does that mean you don't like fiction either from other media like radio plays, television/movies, theater or video games? I mean, I personally love reading books the most when it comes to fiction because I think it's where stories can be fleshed out the best but I'm curious to know.

This is true and I agree with your roommate and you. However, for the most bizarre reason for me it's interesting precisely because it should be boring... That is, the action is boring when viewed from Leto's standpoint but it's fascinating as such a standpoint is as remote from ours as one can be. Have you read Robinson's Mars Trilogy? I love Sax's scientific chapters, especially the one in the 2nd book precisely because it reminds me of GEoD.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I know your feel.
It just feels tedious to get into story driven games(reason why I never play RPGs) but have spent years playing arcade games or games with emphasis on gameplay while watching commentary /documentary vids on YouTube. I have comfortably sat through documentaries where all it had was talking heads talking for hours but watching an episode of anime felt so tiresome.
Maybe it is something to do with my upbringing since my household never had Cable, computer and video game and all I could watch was those documentaries shown at the free broadcast service.

You should go with the PC version for both. >>5018613 did a good summary.

Dune 2 was one of my favorite games as a kid, but it may seem pretty rough nowadays if you're used to modern RTSs. Else you can try Dune 2000 which is kind of a remake of Dune 2 with a rebalancing of units and more challenge.
