Gen 1 is the best, best region, best designs, best lore.

Gen 2 is really close, but it is a bit janky with some design choices, Gimped Kanto was a bad call.

Anything beyond is worse by virtue of embracing the anime aesthetics over Sugamori’s artstyle, the overblown plots, the overdesigned monsters and the kiddified worlds. That said, Emerald is the best SP content and postgame, and Platinum is the peak competitive pvp mechanics.

Red and Blue are good games, better than Yellow even, which casualized the balance a lot.

Pokemon deserved better as it went along, but we’re stuck with the same game every year.

I don't know about best designs either, when you have something like the Diglett line, which makes little sense on its own and is never actually explained.
And Kanto, no kidding, barely had any lore in-game. All the information we get about it comes from outside media.
The older artsyle was more unique, but Pokemon pre-Gen 5 has never looked like anything else anyway. There are also plenty of designs that really pop from being created in the newer artstyle, like Dusknoir---however, I can see very few being unable to be translated into the older artstyle and that working well enough.
Still, stuff like trainers look rather sillier in the old style than the new. I think a balance of the two would probably be best.
I pretty much agree with what you say of Emerald and Platinum.

quite literally what makes him awesome. Voltorb is a mimic with good gameplay synergy, Muk literally ENGULFS his enemies with his BODY, I can go on.

perfect. Not too much in the way, and what is there (Pokedex entries, Town History, Team Rocket, etc) is way better than what comes after. The supplemental materials (especially early Poke Spec) help a lot, but aren’t vital.

Best designs I sort of agree with, already by Gen2 it felt like they were starting to stretch. Best region though I wouldn't agree, lore is good in both.

Gen 2 is so much better in terms of gameplay though. Gen 1 having merged Sattack and Sdefense stats alone makes it fall much lower than Gen 2. That combined with other decent counters for psychic Pokemon and breeding expanding the kinds of monsters you can create pushed it way over the top.

Gen 1 was still great for it's time and what it was, but I still see it as akin to Street Fighter 1. It's an important and influential game, bit lives in the shadow of it's successor.

The SP gameplay is essentially the same, only head to head does it really matter if we’re talking mechanics. Sure there are a few cheesy tactics, but we didn’t know HOW cheesy until years later, and its your choice to use the 3-5 broken Pokemon/moves in your SP runthrough.

Breeding was huge, I agree, best addition from Gen 2.

Calling Gen 1 “The best one” doesn’t preclude it from criticism of course, the bugs are there, I simply have different priorities. I play Pokemon for the adventure simulation through a world that i’m interested in, and to raise cool monsters. I don’t play Pokemon for a series of systems and rulesets, nor do I enjoy the competitive scene. I can take or leave the gameplay formula we’ve stuck with for 22 years.

It’s less the game itself and more the original seed of the idea that gets me excited.
