1st one is okay, 2nd and 3rd games are fantastic

play the amiga versions of 1 and 2, play Mega (3) on genesis

Rendering Ranger has great shooter levels but the actual Turrican levels are meh

Turrican 1 and 2 on commodore systems:
Pros - good music (on amiga) and graphics.
Cons - Shit level design, shit controls, leaps of faith usually landing on spikes or an enemy that saps your energy in half a second, no player feedback or recovery time when you take damage, non existent difficulty ramping/pacing, technical bugs.
The third one is ok on Megadrive and the SNES ones are ok.

Turrican has that early-era euro "random weird shit" aesthetic. Not necessarily a bad thing, but odd. Gameplay isn't so hot to me though.

All I can really think of Turrican is that I'm not nostalgic for it or want to play more.

good but euro design, my fave is super turrican 2 which is a bit more linear and absolutely awesome looking and sounding.

>> No.4989353

1 was a case of "everything and the kitchensink" design and it felt like features got thrown in with no rhyme or reason either because Manfred Trenz just could or because other games they were "inspired by" had them like mines and grenades that you never used, the three use limit on the wheel or the time limit that doesn't really fit with the rest of the game.

2 was a technical marvel on the C64 and pushed the system to its absolute limits (that third shmup stage, Jesus Christ) but at the cost of being incredibly glitchy.
It also becomes apparent by now that the time limit stands in extreme contrast to the levels which are designed around exploration instead of speedrunning and I reccommend everyone to deactivate that shit through a trainer.

Super Turrican on SNES was solid with nothing really terrible about it (except the sudden ending) but also nothing really outstanding outside of the fact that they somehow managed to cram this thing into a 4Mbit cartridge.

ST2 suffers from Earthworm Jim 2 Syndrome, as in it doesn't know what the fuck it wants to be, and ends up being a jack of all trades master of none. There's exactly ONE actual Turrican-esque level in the whole game and even that one is heavily linear while the rest are a mishmash of short "walk from the left to the right" stages, Axelay rip-off shmup levels, faux 3D stages and other gimmicks with no real core gameplay.

Mega Turrican felt like Super Turrican on steroids with all of its planned features included and the beam weapon replaced with a grappling hook.

Shame that Turrican 3D never came to be but judging by the footage and backstory that got leaked it might've been for the better.

The ownership of the IP was a mess and it wasn't until last year that Factor 5 reformed and got it back (IIRC THQ had it up until then).
Funfact: there was an attempt to reboot the franchise in 2008 but yeah, it didn't go too well.
Here's some very early pre-alpha footage (member when that actually meant "fuckall is done" instead of "we only haven't decided on the HUD design"?)

Given how a lot of stuff was "inspired" by other things like the ship and some scenes from the C64 intro being traced and edited Macross images, The Machine being the Liefeld-villain Stryfe and the Turrican sprite being the spitting image of the one from Psycho-Nics Oscar. I wouldn't be surprised if the suit design was actually taken from somwhere else, too.

Oh don't get me wrong.
It's not that the levels are bad, quite the opposite, it's just that most of the game is a roller coaster ride from set-piece to set-piece with almost none of the exploration that the series is known for.
It's closer to a Contra than a Turrican title.

Funfact: during T3D's development Trenz was strictly against turning it into an FPS. To him one of the most important things was to make it clear that you were playing Turrican so the suit and protag had to stand in the spotlight, something that in his eyes couldn't be done properly from the first person perspective.
Given how stubborn that guy is (for example he refused to lower the difficulty of Katakis up until the final development days because he could finish the whole game on one life) and how in the interview where he said that they also showed some actual FPS footage of the game I wouldn't be surprised if that was yet another reason why the game was cancelled.
