>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

It was the only controller I saved from the GC era. It was just too nice of a controller to sell off. I was very glad that the wii offered support for GC. It made the decision to sell all GC hardware a simple one. I got a good price by some hipster looking for a SSB system. Almost what I paid new for it. I love Craigslist.

The monitor was made in 1983 and has geometry controls/knobs for contrast brightness color tint, supports composite in the front and S-video in the back with an adapter. Just grab this adapter for s-video.

Only thing you will probably need to do is open it up and adjust the focus. Easy to take apart, kinda of tricky to put back together as the s-video module is placed weird.

There is usually a /crt/ general at all times. There is TONS of great info in the OP about various problems and fixes.

I have trolled around the internet quite a bit, and this is honestly the most informative and educational site on the net that I have found for discussion of fixing and repair, though mostly it is just general discussion of the technology. And then there is that guy that always spams the 12 bad things about CRTs in every thread with bullet points. He is a tool. Ignore him. I am somewhat surprised he hasn't spammed this up yet.

Anybody know why the general image is wavy on my CRT? It's not that noticeable during gameplay but menus or textboxes with fine vertical lines kinda highlight the issue. I never noticed any issues back in the PS1/N64 era on these flatscreens when they were new and stae-of-the-art, but when you bought one you did have to do some adjustment. There was a setting that would make the screen barrel shaped if you set it wrong but I can't recall what that was called.

You took long enough to post this thread.

- CRTs are no longer produced because they have inferior picture quality versus LCDs
- CRTs emit dangerous levels of X-rays or other forms of radiation
- CRTs always have easily-visible flicker
- CRTs always cause eyestrain
- CRTs always make a high-pitched squealing noise
- CRTs contain lethal amounts of electricity, even when unplugged
- CRTs need calibration more than two to three times a year
- Overall CRT black levels are not superior to LCDs because ambient light ruins CRT black levels
- Analog CRTs have more processing time than digital LCDs due to poor RAMDAC performance
- Afterimages caused by phosphor decay are extremely annoying and are a significant downside of CRTs
- Sending an improper mode (resolution or refresh rate) to a CRT can cause permanent damage
- CRTs cannot have touchscreens
- 4:3 is so bad that nobody should use a non-widescreen CRT
- The Sony GDM-FW900 is the only CRT worth owning
- Curved CRTs have objectively inferior picture quality versus flat CRTs with otherwise equal specifications
- CRTs should not be used because they are heavier and deeper than LCDs
- CRTs have severe reflections because they do not have matte coats
- CRTs can be permanently damaged by nearby magnets
- Analog signals limit a CRT's resolutions and refresh rates and negatively effect picture quality
- Heavy metals are used in CRT glass to reduce radiation

Not meaning you or the person who posted the question, but helping idiots raises prices further. The best option for hipster bandwagoners is if they can't figure out how to use the equipment. CRTs all suck and you should only use flashcarts and retron 5 or analog super-nt. Don't waste your time with this old tech, get something that works with modern displays. We left this old shit in the past for a reason.

(this should be the standard response to bandwagoners)

No, but to describe it:

It was yellow like a church pew. Looked like some sort of basic yellow oak stain. There were gouges and scratches. I had to replace a whole section with new veneer. The legs were ugly yellow with gold around the rings on the bottom of the feet. I would describe it as "ghetto" looking when I got it. I took the whole thing apart totally, and cleaned and repainted every metal spring, screw and part. I used stripper to get rid of their laquer, and hand sanded the whole thing to stay with the grain of the wood.

It is heavy as fuck, and was designed to sit with a couch or loveseat on either side, and the top telescopes out for what? I don't know, but it was so damn cool I had to pick it up. Plus it had nice casters...It makes a nice corner stand for a tv. To give an idea how large it is. it is 36" from the corner to the outside edge.

It was destroyed when I got it for $10. Should have been left for the garbage man.

Can't get a great picture but here goes. This is the main problem my set is having, see how the straight lines on the warp pipe and the little edit sign are wavy? No amount of messing with bow/angle and whatever pins in the service menu seems to help it and it's a noticeable effect in several places on the screen. Additionally, see how the thick black outline of the warp pipe fades out where the edit sign begins? Some objects on screen impose a noticeable "field" that bleeds off to the right of them and can overlap with other elements of the picture like that, not sure if that's normal. Any advice?

I have been shopping for CRTs for the last 5 years. I have seen a total of 2 with component/composite/svideo being sold at second hand stores. They are rare, and you may do better with craigslist. They will be more common with these connections over the next few years. My 20" with component video was made in 2004. It was technology that was on its way in being mated with tech that was on its way out. I think only "High end" shit got that sort of connection.

Ebay is a waste unless you shop locally or shop for something small. Id love to get one of them 9" RCA console Tvs....but HOLY fuck are they expensive.

Try going into manual/pro mode. On android you swipe right to get into there. I usually turn the ISO to something like 60, 45, 30... whatever keeps the phone from making those dark stripes. I've found that manual focus also helps.

If you try in auto, it will fail miserably.

Never tried playing around with refresh rates that much. I went up to 90 and got this bright stripe at the edge of the monitor so I backed off.

Also I believe to have found a solution to my earlier problem. As I went to create a custom resolution it defaults to the current active settings. This reveals that the actual vertical lines were in fact 1024 all along despite being listed as 960. I can get the actual 1280x960 by creating my own custom resolution, but I'll have to set a refresh rate different from all the windows defaults.

No, I am not joking. How I can keep a monitor on for nearly 14 years straight without issue bears testament to how well that it was constructed. I know it was in use as a auto-cad screen prior to my use, and they bought it new. They were in the process of liquidating everything, and I was in the right place at the right time to spend $100 for it.

>>4985979
>I went up to 90 and got this bright stripe at the edge of the monitor so I backed off.

Interesting. I just wonder how much a cable is capable of. This may not prove anything other then your monitor cannot do more then 90hz at that resolution or it might be that the cable is incapable of higher refresh rate. Its great that you got the issue sorted out.

that picture was a meme of a meme. The first Baker just happened to have his 4:3 dell CRT as the OP. I took a photo of his OP on my giant ass CRT, and from there the entire thread turned into /vr/ for a few hours. It was one of the more fun derailings....though in the ptg thread, it is off topic before it begins.

s-video wouldn't blend, it would just lower the quality. Composite and RF cause blur because they combine chroma (color) and luma (brightness) into the same signal. Don't worry about it if nothing is jarring you out of the game like pinstripes and checkerboards do for me.

I recently picked up a S-Video cable for my N64 but seems that my CRT TV doesn’t accept that format (it’s a PAL TV with a Scart connector that takes only Composite and RGB signals). Is there any workaround or I am cursed to see a blurry picture forever?

Have 2 CRT TVs around the house: A 14'' SHARP TV I use more frequently and a 21'' Philips TV just collecting dust. The SHARP TV is pretty decent, sharp as I like it, though it's a bitch to adjust some of its settings. However now I'd like to replace it with the Philips TV, and I remember that the only reason why I didn't really use it is because it was overall pretty blurry, no matter which settings for sharpness I used. Colors were just fine, though.

Is it worth, without much knowledge of electronics, opening that thing up and messing with it? Seems many adjustments are done with the CRT TV turned on, but I'm allergic to zappings like most people.

>> No.4987028

>>4987012
In my experience maximum sharpness looks like shit but if the thing is so blurry it's distracting you no matter what you do to the sharpness setting, it could be out of focus. In that case all you would need to do is open it up and locate the focus pot, it'll be a little screw/dial somewhere near the back that you just need to give a twist until the picture looks the way you want it. Pretty easy fix.

I want to use both RetroArch and GroovyMAME and I noticed that I have to choose between static and dynamic resolutions.

What would you recommend?
1. Dynamic resolutions, which work well with GroovyMAME, but I would have to use only super resolutions with fixed refresh rates of 60hz so RetroArch supports that shit
2. Static resolutions, which means I could use native resolutions in RetroArch without issues but GroovyMAME would have to work with what's available

If I use a dynamic mode table method on vmmaker, it's going to generate a very limited number of resolutions. I'm not gonna have any PAL modelines because it takes only one modeline per resolution (so if I have for instance 320x224@50hz and 320x224@60hz it will only use the latter). GroovyMAME supports the dynamic functionality so it's not an issue, but RetroArch does not.

Are CRT monitors better than TVs?

>> No.4991059

>>4991050

Sort of but it depends on what you want. Honestly a consumer tv with component is usually great. If you're talking computer monitors they are good but you have to have a way to hook them up. If you're talking pvm, they are good but you usually spend a fuckload of money to get them working and the hookups. They are not cheap and honestly are more for something to piss with than just for gaming. I like modding consoles and pissing with different technology so I got a PVM, but I usually play mostly on a 32" consumer tv set.

Dreamcast is pretty easy to hook up to a computer crt monitor.

Basically computer monitor or consumer set you will pay about $100 or less. PVM, by the time you're done getting cables, switchers and shit, you'll have $500-1000 in it or more depending on what you pay for the pvm. PVM=good, but more e-peen credit, consumer set=good but less e-peen points. You'll have to decide how much e-peen is worth to you.

Computer monitor crt are great in that you can easily emulate on them with a computer.

Most retro systems will require some sort of converter to output from their native Component/composite/svideo/scart to whatever the monitor accepts...VGA etc. Emulating to a VGA monitor can look great too. If you get the right monitor, you could handle 640x640 @ 120hz...and it would look pretty impressive.

If you are just emulating, there are plenty of good reasons to use an lcd, though it makes the purist in me shudder. Space saving is one of them.

If you have the space, there is plenty of fun with native hardware on a crt television.

I've had the same issue before with the same device, but I think it may be an issue with the PS3.

This is entirely basless, but I think occasionally the handshake between the Portta and PS3 doesn't work correctly, so you get it dropping the connection from time to time. Haven't tested it, but power cycling it with connected could potentially solve it, but I have no idea. I've had it drop out every 5-10 minutes before, and then others it's ran for hours without a single issue.

NICE. Keep the glare coating on until no longer possible. I have had mine for about 15 years, and the last time I moved (6 months ago) I had a belt on, and the latch scratched the anti-glare. I had to take the glare coat off. It was much too bright, and I had to re-calibrate it. If you still have the oem, keep it. There is replacement stuff, but it varies on how and what it does. It wasn't that long ago, and it honestly feels like a new monitor after all that. It was real simple to get off with no real effort.

I mean, in addition to a healthy scratch right where the crosshairs are, I tried to "buff it out". It doesn't work. Everyone on the internet who said so was correct. Protect that screen when you move it.

Oh, I forgot to add. I recently needed a full system upgrade. My phenom II & gtx 660 was not cutting it. For me the GTX 9XX series was the last with analog support officially. I ended up getting a used titan 6gb for next to nothing. Eventually ill get a 980ti, but I am at the point where I am done buying games. My habits have changed on the PC. I do like to play Shadows of Chernobyl from time to time, and like it running vsyncd.

The average person doesn't really know anything about technology, I don't see why it would be "safer" to buy from some yokel on craigslist who dug the thing out of his barn over someone on eBay who probably actually can test it and knows something about old electronics.

As far as I know, no thrift stores near me even accept CRTs anymore. Even if they did, it's the same problem. I doubt they'd let me test it in the store to any meaningful degree.

I've yet to see a decently priced crt on eBay. Like I said, if you want to massively overpay for something that could potentially have image issues be my guest. Most consumer crt's should be free or dirt cheap besides a very select few that are rare to begin with. All the thrift stores around here take crt's, your only other option is a recycling plant and they are more often miss than hit.

>> No.4994995

I mean, what you're saying is true. You can overpay for a CRT on eBay and get what you want but might face problems, or you can spend months scouring the local market for what you want to show up. Even if you wait for what you want locally, it still might have problems. I think if you do your research and find a good seller online you can find what you want for a price (it's not going to be cheap by any means). Hopefully it's been tested and everything but it might not be.

I don't doubt what you're saying, and I'm sure it's true. I'd just rather buy what I want than wait around for something to (hopefully) pop up locally...

As an owner of a 20" PVM and 13" BVM I can say they are a meme. Don't get me wrong, they look good, but almost clinical. Consumer sets can look very good, if you like sharper images, console mods to rgb and a retrotek adapter can get you there, or s-video cables etc. but without being overly "clinical" looking.

I will say that dvd quality content, ps1/dc and non retro that outputs SD signals look damn good on PVM, but older games (like 8 and 16 bit) lose something on them.

>Most consumer crt's should be free or dirt cheap besides a very select few that are rare to begin with.
When I am hunting: Most CRTs are free or dirt cheap on craigslist. You save someone from possibly paying to have it hauled out. You can always ask for a picture of the date made and model number. Bring a friend. These things can get heavy. If you have any common sense, you can get something in better then average condition. Thick dust/dirt? Still where they were using it? POOL TABLES & BARS! Lots of good tvs are underused in these areas. If they are out with the junk in the garage, they are junk. Let it get warm, and crank bright & contrast. As it warms up, you can smell cat piss, or other gross stuff. If someone KNOWS what they are selling you, you probably don't want it. At this point, I always have X amount of CRT Tvs. In with the new, and out with the worst. Even a good picture of your worst TV plugged into a few "RETRO" systems will sell on craigslist for more then you paid...so long as the glass is clean, and you take good pictures of smash brothers(Gc), Zelda OoT (n64), and Doom or Quake in some format because you aren't just a dweeb. You are edgy, and so is your tv.

>>4995002

I would say so. It could potentially be decent for playing on a desk, but not for extended periods of time. The optimal beginner size is definitely 13". If you can sit pretty close to your set or play on a desk, it should not be bad at all. What's your location?

It's funny that most of the content you say looks good on a PVM/BVM is interlaced as that is the format they were specifically designed to display.

I own quite a few myself and honestly wouldn't recommend anything over 500tvl or so for progressive 15khz display (i.e. most retro gaming) a good SDTV with RGB or a low end pro monitor with coarser grille/mask is the sweet spot IMO.

The JVC/Panasonic/Ikegami cards are made up entirely of passive components; Stuff you can buy off the shelf and just toss together and it'll work.

The Sony cards at the bare minimum have some handshakes going back and forth for the monitor to actually okay it to pass stuff to it and the like.

The JVC card isn't even required if you don't care about proper buffering and the like. You can do the same exact sort of Jungle IC mod that a TV would need to the JVC sets. Needs a few resistors and for you to ground a couple pins to make it think it has a card connected, if I'm remembering correctly. In theory, yes. In practice, probably not. Sometimes it just seems to work though. The process would be that you use the Nvidia Control Panel to create custom 15kHz resolutions, then use a VGA cable into what-have-you. The problem is that this works for some people, but not others. Probably works best on lower-end Nvidia cards, though some dude the other day said he was using a 970 to do it. Didn't work for me on a 980ti, or a 580, or an old 8800GT. The real problem is that no one seems to be able to say why it normally fails, and then for some people just works. The most plausible explanation is that windows won't allow you to set the modes even though they're in the list, and that a program like retroarch is able to override this, but that's pretty iffy if you ask me.

To connect VGA at 15kHz to a j-rok you would need to split out the signals yourself, probably. The j-rok would output composite & S-video & maybe component if you have that model. It should give a 1:1 conversion *we think*, no one has actually confirmed that.

If you have SCART or RGB, you don't want the j-rok, of course.

If you have an Nvidia card you want to try, before getting the jrok, try installing a 480i mode and then setting it in windows somehow **on a second monitor**. It will either show up flickery as fuck on your second LCD monitor, or more likely won't show up at all. Ideally you want the second case. IF you're really lucky the LCD will report not just Out of Range, but tell you the frequency. Either way you can go to the desktop on the visible monitor and check what the resolution is set to. If it says 640x480 but no picture has come up, you managed to set 15kHz 480i. If a picture comes up, and doesn't look flickery, and windows says it's 640x480, you''ve probably got 31kHz 480p - either you didn't install the resolution right, or, if you try a few times, your combination of hardware isn't going to work.

I've used so many of these in my school career, I should ask my middle and high school if I can take one home.

With a Garo transcoder (they're making more for order next month) you can use SCART or component and transcode it to support 480i-1080i.

I don't have one since I plan on getting a PVM soon, but monitor + Garo is probably a cheaper and practical solution to a PVM/BVM. This would also be the easiest way to play in 480p Progressive Scan.

Yes, you are 100% correct. You could use the DVI-I slot on the GPU directly into a DVI-I to VGA adapter. The adapter is dirt cheap if you don't have one. You can get into the nvidia Control panel, and fiddle with custom resolutions. You could set it as your secondary monitor and have its settings work independent of your main desktop display. I ran a CRT with LCD on the side for quite a while, and it worked great. I am trying to "like" LCDs, so I put the CRT away for a bit. I still hate LCDs.

>what are some eulators I could to to see if it displays native 240p?
It most likely will not support 240p. It looks like something that is 1024x768 or larger. You will know when you plug it in.

Another obstacle is that the gpu will not output true 240p. There are very few that can, and you have to use modded software to get it.

I had been using "Dual Monitor Tools 2.7" for desktop background. If the displays are at native resolution, it stretches an image across both monitors based on their positions. Its a pretty slick tool. I posted a photo of it here: >>4984050. I got some pretty nice 4k+ images. that work well for this sort of thing.
(pic related)

Mine are plugged into DVI-I to BNC for the monitor, and dual link DVI-d to the LCD. The 9XX series was the last to offer analog output native. The 980 is great for interfacing with dead technology like CRTs.

Another thing to "check" with the monitor is at the recommended resolution is to see how far you can take the refresh rate. 60 is default, but you should be able to hit 75 or even 85+ if its a quality tube. 120hz games look incredible on a tube crt, even if it is emulation. It is sharp. Very crisp.

I don't think a Pi does 240p. The last/easiest/laziest way to do 240p output is with a modded wii.

That's generally true, but Nintendo specifically tends to cut back on features on the second model revision to save money.

The Gamecube lost its Digital AV port for its 101 model, the Wii lost Gamecube compatibility with its 101 model, the Nintendo DSi couldn't play GBA games, and so on.

I'm sure there's other examples with earlier consoles but I'm honestly not familiar enough with them.

no one revises a console to make it better, they revise it to make it cheaper to manufacture. that means making it smaller and removing features

Some revisions are generally better though. Slim PS3s and Slim 360s don't break nearly as much due to overheating for example

I'm not wrong or deflecting. S-Video was never removed from N64s worth playing on.

In fact, the picture quality from CVBS and YC is better on later revision N64s. Later revision N64s are also better for overclocking.

Good info actually, thanks boys. Guess it's original or bust, I had no idea that lost features and fewer options was a common practice with console revisions until today.

Thanks, just ordered one from their website. I almost got some off-brand one that I would've needed a separate splitter box to get audio with.

I recently had the pleasure of acquiring this little guy. Other than needing a thorough cleaning, it seems to be in pretty good shape.

What would be the simplest way to connect this to a modern PC? I've asked before about connecting a CRT monitor via VGA, which is simple enough via a DVI to VGA adapter (which my graphics card thankfully supports). However, this is a different beast. Maybe DVI to VGA to S-video? Would that negate the entire point of the higher quality of the display by going through so many conversions?

its not really a high quality display, it's one of the lowest end PVMs possible. consider looking into a way to output 480i rgbs.

Easiest but a little sketchy way is just VGA to 5xBNC cable, use a BNC T connnector to combine Hsync+Vsync. Proper way is use an extron interface box or some other proper sync combiner device.

I ordered this and a VGA to S-video as well. Was fairly cheap, so we'll see what happens.

You have to understand that computers since the 80's are designed to output higher resolutions than TV's, so from your computer it is very dificult to output lower than 480p. This is a problem when SDTV's in general and your monitor specifically only display 480i. Your converter box will work, just keep in mind it will be downscaling the signal. It will look like shit and will most likely be laggy as hell

How long do CRT's last or is it a crapshoot?
Found a nice one with SCART but was manufactured in the late 80s. I don't want to get it and have it die on me in a year or two.

>> No.5008098

>>5008007
The tube itself will generally last in the tens of thousands of hours, may be unusable from burn in sooner than that if it spends most of its life showing a static image/text. The rest of the set is a bit of a crapshoot.

>> No.5008191

>>5008007
It’s long lasting technology. Most sets from the 60s are still running fine today. The question is what abuse has the used system taken? A cheaply made Zenith from the 70s that was hardly used and kept in a dark dry space for decades will give you decades on decades. A 2000s Sony Trinitron that’s been exposed to the hot sun for a decade and kept on a snow channnel for hours on end might only have years before it starts failing.

Anyone have experience with these Commander AV cables?
I keep seeing them everywhere in hardware stores in the Philippines and they are cheap, but I am not sure of the quality, the packaging, the thick wires, and the golden plates tell me that it looks good, but I am not sure.
They are apparently a Japanese brand.

Been planning on buying a component cable for my DVD player.
And fortunately, here in the Philippines, there is some hope of buying a Monster cable, but they're much more expensive than the Commander brand, even if they're still cheaper here than in America.

So, in case Commander cables are crap, I can just save up for Monster cables instead.

Someone's giving away this 28" console Trinitron in my area, but I don't want a console TV. Are these types actually integrated into the console, or is it just a normal TV that sits inside a wood box? In other words, would it be possible to extricate the TV from the Console in a practically useful state?

I'm not sure, but that console tv looks sick. But be careful, I think that tv maxes out at composite by the looks of it, in case that bothers you

>I'm not sure, but that console tv looks sick
Doesn't it? I love the design of that era of Trinitrons.
>I think that tv maxes out at composite by the looks of it
How can you tell? That would certainly be a deal-breaker for me.

I'm also looking at picking up a more recent 20" Sony Trinitron(KV-20FS100), which has Component input but no S-Video. I plan to use RGB-Scart to Component and plug in using the component plugins, I want to play my Saturn on it. I don't own S-Video cables for any of my consoles, though my collection is certainly not extensive, and I don't want to screw myself over for the future and end up having to grab another TV to have better picture quality than composite. Which consoles support S-Video but not RGB?

Yes, but the speakers are not "attached" and you would have to have another box to put it into. You could make a shelf for the whole unit to sit on, but I would not take it apart. That thing is pretty bad ass.

Plug it in and make sure it works before you leave with it. However, if it don't have at least s video, I would question if I wanted it.
