this is the sticking point, the egg throwing, air walking and other primary elements of the game just aren't that exciting imo, it's fine as an alternative to traditional platforming but I wouldn't call it the best ever, no way

>decent story
I guess it's fun to have something besides the normal kidnapping plot but it ultimately doesn't add much for me..

The Super Mario World 2 title makes me like Yoshi's Island a bit less because I didn't play it until recently and always thought it would be a continuation of the obvious answer for the best SNES game

this will sound gay but i was ecstatic when i first played yoshi's island. i loved smw and yi was just... this incredibly elegant variation on it, just every little detail was lovely - the way each stage looked, the music, the reworked designs of the shyguys and koopas, the new enemies, the gimmicks like the chomps descending from the sky and chomping down the ground, the new moves like yoshi's double jump, the sound effects, everything, it was pure bliss.

Yoshi's Island is gorgeous to look at, pleasant to hear, and all the effort put into it, including the charming variety of enemies, good minigames and well put together leveldesign is simply amazing.

The problem that it's really hard to play, to get 100% (which is really emphasized by the devs) is just a chore, and kills the gameplay's dynamics. Especially the red coins are awful, especially considering some of them can be permanently lost.

Overall, a very charming experience, but more for it's awesome audiovisual value, not for it's gameplay.

It has the most deep and complex gameplay mechanics in any 2d platformer up to its date of release, with the exception of maybe Super Metroid.

Theres a mod that gets rid of the baby crying and turns the counter more into a hit point system. I actually enjoyed it a lot.

>> No.5004742

>>5004675

The annoying crying is your punishment for getting hit, I never understood the hatred for it. Also one of the reasons why I like YI so much is exactly BECAUSE of the pretty unique hit system with the bubble, not ANOTHER hitpoint based system, geee I haven't seen enough of that already...

>> No.5004749

>>5004742

Also, when you're a small child, losing Mario and trying frantically to get him back is a little nerve-wrecking. Being at one hitpoint doesn't have the same effect.

>> No.5004846

>>5004742
>>5004749
I absolutely understand that being getting annoyed is supposed to be apart of the punishment. That's why the mod exists because most people don't like getting annoyed as negative reinforcement. Dying and losing progress should be enough.

That said you can have it being nerve wrecking at one hit point with having the same intense music start to play. One hit point with an alarm going off is pretty standard.

>> No.5004854

this is a good point

>> No.5004863

I think Yoshi's Island is good, but I don't get the people who worship it. Everything about it is fine, but I think the pace is too slow and deliberate for it to be in the pantheon of sidescrolling-platform games. But, I think some people like that, it's not necessarily better or worse.

>>5004742
I don't think that's why the crying is there, though. I don't think the Masterminds were sitting around in a conference room with a diagram of the human brain saying shit like, "How can we condition the player to Not Want to Lose? Ah, the baby will cry."

>> No.5004875

>>5004863
>I don't think the Masterminds were sitting around in a conference room with a diagram of the human brain saying shit like
I actually would be more surprised if game developers don't consider the human condition when creating game concepts. Probably isn't as pretentious as you're making it sound, but game theory isn't exactly new.

>> No.5004880

>>5004875
Still, this is mind-reading. It's just some guy's inchoate rationalization that keeps getting repeated. Let's not give credit where it isn't due without developer interviews to back it up or something.

>> No.5004894

>>5004863

No, anon, the noise is intended to be annoying, there's no reason to put it in the game except for that.

>> No.5004906

>>5004880
Its a very logical thing to deduce, though. Games are always trying to discourage you from doing wrong and encourage you to do right. Earlier games they discouraged you from being hit by losing your power up or dying if you did not have a powerup. Losing a powerup can be pretty detrimental to your progress in the long run because you might not have your feather to fly up the secret area now. But this mechanic did not exist in Yoshi's Island. So to discourage you from being hit, they a short term annoyance of having to stop what you're doing to grab the baby and getting annoyed by the crying until you grab the baby.

>> No.5004907

>>5004894
Right, but it's not meant to "punish" you, it's just a glorified "you got hit/are low on health" alert.

>> No.5004908

>>5004907

That IS a punishment.

Anon, a punishment is meant to inform you that you're doing something wrong. That it is annoying is intentional and that is in fact a punishment.

Just because the game doesn't outright kill you doesn't mean you aren't being punished.

>> No.5004923

>>5004907
The crying baby being annoying is important because it discourages you from just trying to wait until the very end to get the baby since the counter always resets to a minimum of 10. Overall it is a lot easier to stay alive in Yoshi's Island because of that reset, so they want to discourage people from abusing that.

>> No.5004924

>>5004906
>>5004908
It's just a health bar, and every enemy inflicts poison on you. Touching the baby reverses the effect of the poison.

Consequences are not the same thing as punishments. If anything, the baby crying is a natural asset because it lets you know you're about to lose. This is the same reason that pain is a good thing, because people who clinically can't feel pain are at greater risk of severe injury or death. But when you feel pain, nature is not punishing you, because nature doesn't know who was at fault. Conversely, if you -don't- get hit, this is not a reward, it's inherently neutral.

When I played it in my early teens I thought it was clearly the best platformer ever made. I made sure to get 100% on everything.

Playing it again recently I found it rather boring, though I didn't make it through the first world. But my attention span is much shorter now and I don't get into games as easily as I used to back then.

I don't know if it's the best platformer ever. But it's probably safe to say it's Nintendo's best platformer. Either this or Donkey Kong '94.

Getting hit by an enemy is a non desirable action, and so they impose the consequence for this action to having a limited time to get the baby back that is too annoying to just leave alone to the last second.

The count down timer is the natural asset that objectively tells you how much time you have with numbers getting red and big as time runs out, not the baby crying. A baby crying is supposed to be irritating and non desirable thing which is why they cry in real life so they can get attention, and why so many parents have sleepless nights and complain about babies crying when they go into work.
