A Jet Set Willy -like. At least I think so. It makes a bit of sense to use such a term, since there were a whole lot of platformers with point and click or text adventure elements (using specific items in specific places, inventories, text commands). Think Dizzy games.

Those are called "Arcade Adventures", and are inspired by Pyjamarama. Willy-inspired platformers are a different beast, and involve exploring a huge world and usually collecting a whole bunch of items scattered around. Completely different types of games.

I didn't know there was an actual name for those games. I've just been thinking of them as puzzle platformers.

The genre kinda disappeared after a while, but it was a common term back in the 80s, and all the magazines used it.

nobody uses the term. it is an invention by people butthurt about the term "Metroidvania" for whatever reason.

they have a hard time with the concept of non-linear exploration through upgrading abilities. you might as well just call everything a pongvania, really.

because it's just as much as a made up term same with Roguelike

Inventing the genre isn't enough, it has to also Seize the Means of Repro-duction in order for anyone to care about it.

What is language, really?

As long as people understand what a Metroidvania is, it stays.

ASCII Scroller.

That's because Jet Set Willy came out 2 years before Metroid and people are finally starting to wake up and learn the truth.

What in the everloving fuck happened to the board? I came here after a while and now it's all filled with in-jokes to random other threads or even OPs starting out with a """"""""joke""""""""" like this one. It's like a goddamn parody of circlejerking, only for real.
