Now that EmuParadise has caved to outside pressure and stopped providing games to download, it's only a matter of time before other sites follow.
We need to pool a list of sites and torrent links to get retro games, before they get taken down.

Once you have that and the Atari 2600 set I'd say you're good for "essentials," but definitely consider Jaguar, Lynx, and Neo Geo. They're maybe not remembered as "classics" the way the SNES is, but if it's pre-2000 cartridge based then it's only going to take another couple hundred MB of space at worst so you might as well.

No, because anyone who has been using the Internet for years knows how this shit works.

First there is a huge scare when the corporations tear down a few pirate giants. We lose our hub, we feel a sense that the community has been shaken up.

Then after the fall out people realize oh wait a darn minute, millions of these files are already floating around on personal drives anyway and there is nothing that lawyers can do about that. People who are too small to notice go on sharing. Eventually new p2p networks pop up.

And the next step is we congregate somewhere else to trade. Word of mouth passes through the community. Within three to four years there are new hubs to get what we want. And the cycle repeats.

They will never stop us.

Sellers of old games spend that money on new games, and people are more likely to buy new games if they can be expected to hold their value. Publishers may be looking at used prices to gauge demand for re-issues, remakes, sequels, prequels, spinoffs. And you're less likely to buy a new game if old ones are keeping you perpetually entertained.

>buying nintendo products

You have no one but yourself to blame.

Nintendo is an arrogant company that has been riding on nostalgia for the last 30 years, they believe they don't have to compete in their chosen industry and they demonstrate this by selling underpowered, overpriced and gimmicky game consoles with first party games that would have been considered mediocre shit if they were a new original IP in 2018 and not the tail end of a 35 year old franchise.
They literally sell a cardboard controller kit for Nintendo switch that lets you "build your own fun" for the low low price of $80 - and their fans ate that shit up on release.

Yeah PSN skimped you a bit, but Nintendo straight up dropped support for the platform altogether - and I bet you they will have the audacity to re-release it again because they know their fanboys will snatch that shit up.

Seriously, stop giving Nintendo money.

Because it's been a norm for decades, it's the only way to actually play the vast majority of games (especially foreign titles) and there is no way the entire library can be released for retail due to the tangled web of licenses, copyrights, etc involved. There are plenty of examples of games which would not be playable or be completely forgotten if it wasn't for piracy, not to mention fan translations, etc.

no one is entitled to read every novel ever penned, or listen to every string quartet ever composed. and yet there are aficionados of these things, who endeavor to do just that. the enthusiasm of aficionados tends towards the encyclopedic. retro gamers *want* to play all the games. knowledge of obscure games is praised in this forum; superficial taste is mocked. one wants to dig deep - it is a healthy instinct. an increasingly illegal one too, as draconian copyright laws not only take over the globe but also stretch more and more into the past, pulling old works out of the public domain.

piracy is not about entitlement, it's about preserving the dignity of your taste.

Ladies, take a look at this list of PS1 games (A-L), and note that there are so many titles listed as "unreleased" that Firefox is unable to count them all, simply stating "More than 1000 matches".
Travel to hell and highwater to find one such 20+ year old game, and pay through the nose, hope your aging console still works.... or simply download it and use an emulator.
So some obscure copyright holder (totally detached from the game's creators) grits his teeth and pines for the 90's when they could charge super-exorbitant prices for poor underprivileged kids to pay.
Remember the games were $50 - $70 dollars? That's $90 - $125 current value, per 8-bit game. Now they want more.

The answer is no because holy fuck you would have to get a license for LITERALLY EVERY FUCKING GAME.

These licenses don't expire; they don't vanish, every game sold is sold by certain people; they are also licensed by other companies in other territories; you'd have to track down three, four, five different rights holders for each game.

OH WAIT, IT'S NOT JUST THE GAMES.

If they have music in them, that's licensed and needs to be negotiated for EVERY GAME. If it's a film or a book or an anime license then GUESS WHAT, YOU GOT TO DEAL WITH THE LICENSE HOLDERS.

Some will be easier than others as all the licenses, etc will be held by one company. Others will be split over a dozen or so globally and remember, you only need ONE company to say no to shut down the game from global distribution via the internet.

It can't be done. Or you could just pirate them, cover your tracks and put it somewhere outside of Nintendo's easy reach.

as >>4998687 rightly if apoplectically points out, copyright law tends to lead to byzantine legal tangles.

pro-copyright stances, even in the case of seemingly benign compromises such as the lending library idea, are ultimately bad.

the radical libertarian position would be that once an artifact such as a book, a song or a game is released, it should effectively belong to the public domain. it might sound frighteningly anarchistic to more delicate sensibilities, sure, but i find that libertarian ideas tend to dovetail nicely with "natural law" perspectives and even with classic catholic thought.

this is, after all, what happens in practice. most people pirate. particularly people who live outside the puritanical-legalistic cultural bubble of a certain country renowned for its fatmobile-riding denizens.

By forming the correct URLs we don't need the script. The pattern is easy, but I don't know how to find the IP address or rom collection names in the URL (i.e. /Sega_Saturn_ISOs/ is just /Saturn/). Anyone know how to do this? Anyway, below are three examples:

Also if you're going to actually burn something with ape audio this is probably your best bet as far as ds filters go: http://dsp-worx.de/index.php?n=7

You may need to edit the cue sheet first, usually I open it in notepad and use the replace all function to do that, .wav replaced with .ape and the WAVE at the top replaced with APE. Sounds like a pain in the ass, I know, but it saves a shit load of time over dealing with conversions. Same goes for FLAC.

Fucked up cue sheets are just a fact of life unfortunately. Music uploaders on redacted.ch never fix theirs either. It's almost like they just include them because it's the only way to get a 100% upload but they've never actually used one in their life and probably don't even know what it's for. Anyway those rips are probably 15+ years old and have been around since before flac was a thing or at least caught on. If you're really concerned about it you would probably have better luck getting redump stuff off rutracker or whatever.

Let me put things in perspective for you. In 2004 I was really excited when my mom took me to Best Buy to get a 120gb hard drive to supplement the 80gb one I already had. When I downloaded a game with redbook audio it usually came with mp3s or ape files instead of wavs. There were also tutorials kicking around about how to deal with that shit. You couldn't just go find files like these on sites like emuparadise. You had to wait in queues on fserves and download the shit file by file. Or maybe even trade with other people in the IRC channel.

Even though those days are long gone the rips that were made back then were used as the basis for sites like emuparadise. Cleaning up that old trash would be a lot of work. Of course it would be easy to replace it with modern stuff like redump but it doesn't matter at this point because the site is dead. If you really care about getting better files then the torrents with complete redump sets and the like are the way to go. Just select the games you want out of them individually and only download those. Or archive the whole set if you want.

Saturn boot roms are all multiregion. You can run a Hi-Saturn BIOS on an European PAL unit and it affects nothing, the console would still only run European titles. The hardware region itself is controlled elsewhere in a hardware register, that the boot rom looks up.

On an emulator you just have to fix your fucking config to use a certain region, not switch boot roms.

There's an undatted section and numerous "Missing in Action" threads for dumps that were made, but they don't currently have on ROMShepherd. The idea of checking the PC or other system's "MIA" list and looking around for a download link to post in one of those threads and stop being a lazy tard is seriously too much to ask.
This also comes from how most in this thread don't really care about any actual preservation, so they'll be No-Intro puritans, and ignore that GoodSet also has GoodSPC for SNES sound files while no one in this thread gives a shit about even mentioning TOSEC, because it dares to archive computer systems that No-Intro doesn't touch, and instead of No-Intro tards working together with the superior TOSEC, they're only in this for consolefag nostalgia & muh Nintendo games.
There's not even the current Redump PSX Japan set on archive.org, only the Non-Redump, because that's too much effort for console baby leeches.

read the article, it's basically an online rental, with the limitations of a physical one

you can rent without obtaining a license beyond owning the game (you can't rent PC games because you can't guarantee they've been uninstalled)
http://www.entmerch.org/industry/video-rental-faq.html
the last part of that list in the link is side-stepped by it not being considered a copy, the software here only stores the game in RAM and specifically ties access to individual cartridges (this bit is the loophole, they can only allow as many players of a game as they have cartridges of it on hand)
so under the law, you're renting access to the cartridge, which the software manages

as an aside, you could probably dump the game from RAM, but that's all on you, that'd basically be like if, back in the day, you took a cartridge copier to a game you rented

$60 bucks a pop can amount to a lot, especially if you live in a place where tech is expensive (my case)

the redump Xbox set is over 10Tbs. that's $300. granted, it's full of dummy data, but still. and I'd have a backup in case the main fails.
same with the PS2 and, to a lesser extend, GC. disc dumps are just too big to be affordable, assuming you're doing it right. in which case you'd want cloud storage, too.

>$60 bucks a pop can amount to a lot, especially if you live in a place where tech is expensive (my case)
I used to keep my backup on a 1tb external drive. It failed last year totally. I lost a lot of free software that has vanished from the net. It was nearly full of all sorts of things for windows 2000-windows 10. I decided I would never let that happen again.

I found a pair of no hdd mini business pcs for $80 shipped. I ordered a pair of 2tb hdd for $100. Eventually ordered 2 more 2tb. Running a 1+0 setup for NAS storage was the best decision I have ever made. Fears of catastrophic failures are much reduced by disc redundancy. I have a bit less then 4tb of storage, and I am ok with that for now. Most think this is low, but this is quite a bit for the way my family uses pcs. We don't do most media including movies or music. I am a player, not a preservationist. If a game is objectively garbage to me, I ignore it. I realize that others may feel different and I respect their opinions on the matter all the same. Bebe's kids for SNES is not worth my disc space. I do buy hardware for fun and profit however.

Also, the NAS works best when you are on a hardwired network...but I also have a shitty wireless card. It could be better with a good wifi card, but I don't know. My whole house is wired for high speed ethernet.

Nintendo likes to take away retro things from fans. I remember when all numbers of Nintendo Power magazine had to be deleted. Tbh, I was just waiting for this day to come, when this company requests to take down all their retro ROMs.
It would be okay if they made access to them possible, even paid.

I don't have the space for a server, unfortunately. I have to rely on external drives exclusively since I can't afford cloud storage.

right now I have 2 1Tb internal drives inside my PS2 and Xbox, I also have a 500Gb external one for my Wii. since they're in use though, I figured they're bound to die eventually. so I 7zipped and backed every game up in 2 other 1Tb external drives. they're never used, so they should last a bit longer.

lastly, 2 more 1Tb drives for PSX/DS/PSP/Saturn, one as a backup.
I have no-intro spread across all of them since it's just 35 gigs.

it's not perfect, but it's what I could afford.

>Go to metacritic and filter by Wii releases and see if I'm exaggerating.
I have a backup loader on my wii. I have kids that are teenagers at this point, so when they gave up the wii for the PC, I was able to mod it. We did purchase every single game that was good for 1-4 players. I think it filled up 75gb or less on my backup drive. Adding all the bullshit "Lets dance" games that the daughter and wife demanded was another 20gb. I have 35 games taking up 92gb of space on the Wii backup drive.....Meanwhile the actual ISO are 4.3 gb each...a few are larger, but ISO backups of the same games is over 160gb. The dance ones really take up space.....

I am using this 100gb ssd because it is just what I had laying around. Someone going crazy about collection certainly wants some bonkers huge 10tb external, but its going to be a power hog, and full of wasted space. The average person could easily live with 500gb or less.

Wii was full of shovelware, no different then the other systems of the era. I hated how Nintendo ruined every game with controller effects. I hated what they did with the gc games. They ruined donkey kong jungle beat.

>>5004921
>I don't have the space for a server
>35 gigs.
I gotcha. It is still worth having some sort of backup solution for essential items. A 2 drive raid in a simple mini pc is very capable of safe long term storage and access. You can even just ethernet jack it right into your PC if you use wireless for the pc.....Pic related is an old shot of my 4tb server under my monitor before it got moved to an out of the way corner. I don't get into preservation however, and I understand your desire for space.

I'm the @GudSet account on archive.org. I have an upload speed of around 20 - 60kb/s on a good day with only a 500GB internal. A post on ROM Shepherd implied the GoodGBA & GoodN64 sets were taken down, but I could never upload them with this connection. I reuploaded various things from DoujinStyle.com, some hentai games & some Korean game I found on HG101's forums. Why he didn't run the game by Redump when he dumped it, I don't know. I don't expect anyone to invest in a yacht of HDD's, but if you can't bother to reupload just ONE thing, you're an idiotic leech. Just make a throwaway email with GMX or whatever email and upload something. Cloud Storage is cancer, and many from 4shared & MediaFire have it written explicitly in their ToS that they will erase your account if you don't log in for 6+ months. There is no upload limit to having an Archive account. You could just reupload one Xbox game or one PSX game that isn't already listed. This isn't rocket science.

APE saves an additional 10 bytes of space.

What is actually funny is that WinRAR compresses standard WAV files extremely good, almost as good as dedicated lossless compressions, and it detects the pcm sound data in any file. You can have a 1-file bin/cue in a RAR and it would be maybe 5% bigger than a multitrack one in iso/ecm/ape but infinitely simpler to prepare for playing.

(RAR v5 actually removes that pcm detection and compresses bin/cue with audio tracks a lot worse than RAR v4)

>> No.5005710

>>4999994
>Fucked up cue sheets are just a fact of life unfortunately. Music uploaders on redacted.ch never fix theirs either.

They use EAC cue sheets which are not compliant with the format, only with EAC. However their one single use only is making sure you can burn pregaps fine, so that gets a pass - if you give enough shits about having that on an audio CD, then you should be having EAC installed anyway.

For games, you have broken cue sheets everywhere because
- people keep editing it in shit like sega cue maker, or simply in notepad
- people do bad rips in things like Alcohol 120% which fucks up the track positions and all audio tracks desync
- cue sheet itself isn't a formally defined standard, it was just added in CDRWin4 and other apps copied it, so you have a lot of applications not handling it properly.

>If you're really concerned about it you would probably have better luck getting redump stuff off rutracker or whatever.

The rips with APE audio is redump stuff, that's how they packaged their stuff at one point.

Lots of peeps also think that because an old Windows 95 game has been ported to Steam/GOG that it also means they're reselling the same game when it's actually just yet another revision. At least with VC/Official Clone Consoles, they use an old, already verified ROM. PC games have lots of revisions, and you're certainly not getting the same installation screens with the digital versions. If you want to play the original game, you still have to play it on original, Win95 hardware.

Out of curiosity, does anyone here download one game at a time? It seems in the various threads I read, everyone talks about fullsets. Those are nice and all but I prefer focusing on one at a time. I tried that during the GBA days and it led to me not playing half of them. I don't need help, I still have my private sources. Just wondering if most just prefer having the library or prefer having a "shop" open at all times.

Educate a brainlet and copyright-lawlet.
The main party doing the legal threats is Nintendo - do they actually have legitimate claims to demand every single Nintendo game console ROM pulled, or do you think they just made such imposing legal threats that the guys at Emuparadise decided to play it safe and pull the plug on the whole thing?

Because it's been quite a common sight on many ROM hosting sites to see Nintendo's 1st party titles being unavailable due to takedown notices, but the vast majority of 3rd party games being offered just fine.

I am, is it even possible for Nintendo to demand 3rd party titles to be taken down? With their self developed titles it's clear: they developed it, they have the copyrights, they can demand it taken down. But what about 3rd party titles? A company develops a game to be released on a Nintendo console, they pay licensing fees to Nintendo and assumably a healthy cut of the sales profits. But what kind of copyright standing they have on those 3rd party titles when their licenses have presumably long since expired and quite a lot of those 3rd party developer companies don't even exist anymore, either completely or in their original form?
