Whatever keyboard controls you want.
Doom didn't have freelook, like later games, however it DID let you use a mouse to turn horizontally (which makes a world of difference over keyboard only).
If you look at the 'attract' mode demos playing at the menu, you see the turning is very smooth and fast, that's because they were recorded with a mouse, and there's also some old video footage of John Romero test playing a build of Doom with a mouse.

Some people may say that it was intended for keyboard only, but they're idiots, or nostalgic poorfags. Back in 1993, some people didn't have a computer with enough memory to run both Doom.exe and a mouse driver at the same time, and erroneously remembers their subpar rig as "How The Developers Intended".

This has been a huge problem across 4chan lately. A lot of people aren't just interested in reporting and ignoring, they have to report and then try to sneak in a quip after the fact, like "And people say /v/ isn't here" or "Like flies on shit" or "You know what he's trying to do" or "You people are OBVIOUSLY falling for this?".
Report and ignore requires you to report AND IGNORE, no matter how tempting it is for you to even say "r & i".

also i lost interest in making idolm@ster doom since there was not enough resources and using gzdoom builder is too hard to understand and not enough tutorials on how to use DECORATE and also need to work on my spriting skills to make Rin Shibuya's hands feminine looking rather than the standard doom guy look. So the Doom Slayer Chronicles team (aka the guys who did Don't Play With Hell and that BD: Black Edition fork) put out a gameplay trailer a few hours ago to show off mod compatibility.

https://youtu.be/hNED7c8hiSg

Color me unimpressed by their gussied up Invasion maps so far. Don't Play With Hell carried itself more on its atmosphere rather than its gameplay, but the level design was far more interesting than the bland pap that's on display here. I sincerely hope that there's more to this set than "walk into corridor, corridor locks down, fight wave of monsters to unlock corridor, ad nauseum".

Also their taste in mods is pleb tier outside of maybe Hunter's Moon, but that's neither here nor there

Try making a player skin. If you have an image editor and can work with SLADE it's not the most difficult thing to make image files into a doom compatible format and get it into game. Even if it's a small baby step and doing things like editing weapon and hand sprites is another ballgame, it's a step that is really important if your goal is 'get a character into doom'.

There are lots of skin wads and images online that you can use as a base --no need to make it perfect, focus on getting images and sound files into the game. But if doing this isn't fun, then maybe modding just isn't for you. The person who needs to do the bulk of the mod work is you, nobody's gonna do it for you. Good luck.

He does. There's a whole bunch of DoomNukem modelstuff, but in general nowadays he does almost all of the spritestuff himself.
His self-improvement drive is quite inspiring, if there's something he can't do he dedicates a year to it until he's good at it. I've been following the same path recently; trying my own hand at studying art and spriting, doing a lot of test character designs and editing together a lot more pixelstuff myself.
I'm not super-great, yet, but I'm starting to hate my stuff less and I can feel myself doing more and getting better with it over time. With luck, I'll be able to finish a spriteset myself--I'm quite happy with how Corzo from High Noon Drifter came out, even if it's quite a simple editjob.

very cool map anon, I played as necro on 2nd hardest difficulty and it was very hard!

Put some clip brushes near the wall plaques and decorations - getting stuck on them isn't fun.

The "turn back" message at the very start should have a longer timer - it shouldn't come up 10 times per second (or whatever it is). Once every 1.5 or 2 seconds is plenty enough.

Really great construction, I didn't finish it, but I'll try it again on a lower difficulty - could easily be a hexen 2 map from the game.

Not all souls are lost souls either, in fact they could be the souls of the demons.

Not saying you're wrong though! Maybe it is just an artificial screen that somehow tapped into hell and is looking into the abyss.

I don't believe that specific texture is mentioned anywhere in the doom bible nor do I think that they had a specific story behind it....likely open to interpretation and it varies based on the artistic views of the wad author.

Guy from here >>4996317 again, just to clarify, I think everything in E1 is perfection, especially E1M7, I love that level. E2M1 is okay, E2M2 is good, everything else in the first Doom ranges from 'meh' to terrible (though I may be forgetting something else I liked in there). I like Doom II levels overall for their larger size, and alot of them had more memorable features, hence why I say they are overall more "iconic." The Crusher, Downtown, The Courtyard, The Chasm, Circle of Death, The Inmost Dens, Barrels O' Fun, all of these are built around a specific idea or theme and are very well-balanced levels in the design of their geometry. Whereas I think there are more than a few levels in the first Doom that just feel like a random collection of corridors are and way too maze like, making it incredibly easy to get lost.

>> No.4996494

Most (all) ID-made levels are shit-terrible. They were made so they could run on the shittiest hand-me-down computers 12 year olds were using at the time.

The best ones were ones with coherent themes. The John Romero ones were just slapped together sectors and some objects and monsters scattered about with no logic to them. The #1 priority was no visplane errors, basically. OBLIGE can literally make levels better than ID did.

>>4996375
I'm not sure what those are, but one thing to keep in mind is that you need weapon models for VR, so any wad that has custom weapons will be less then ideal. I think they should work but instead of holding a 3D weapon model you'll just be "holding" a tracked sprite.

That's what Hexen did at least, I could only find weapon models for DOOM/DOOM II and Heretic.

>>4996376
I'm on Rift but yes, it should work. It's running on OpenVR so everything should be right at home on Vive.

I don't think weapon models exist for Hexen, or at least I couldn't find them. Aim works perfectly fine though, so the game should be fully playable.

That sounded like a good idea so I tried messing with things which immediately resulted in the game locking itself to 35FPS. I didn't change anything relating to any FPS cap (I was messing with HUD options). I think something might be slightly fucked with the VR version, I had to manually disable the FPS cap from the .ini.

I'll mess with it more some other time since I'm not sure exactly what I should disable (haven't used gzdoom before), though in VR it doesn't actually look as terrible as it does in the screenshots on a monitor.

>>4996606
I've only tried Doom, Heretic and Hexen wads so far. All work fine except Hexen has no weapon models. Not sure if fully custom wads would work but I'd be inclined to think they do, the monsters are all sprites anyway so I imagine custom ones make no difference. It's just the guns that need special treatment (or you're left holding a sprite, looks pretty uncanny).

The weapon models are loaded separately from a different pk3

>>4996612
If I'm not mistaken this version that I'm playing is actually new. You actually have motion control, so you aim the guns as if you're holding them in your own hand. I think the old one didn't have this, so it's even better.

Two questions:
After having tried both (GZDoom with modern FPS controls and faster monsters + Chocolate Doom with WASD + Horizontal mouse look) I have to say I enjoy both equally for different reasons, I guess. The former is naturally more fast paced and you enjoy a lot more freedom, but the latter feels more relaxed and still tons of fun.

The one difference that I'm still divided on is the music. On GZDoom, it uses Fluidsynth for the MIDI's by default and at least to my ear it sounds great. I think Chocolate Doom uses OGL chip emulation, and it sounds much duller in comparison.

So TL;DR I wanted to ask - which sound emulation for the MIDIs in DOOM is closer to the original, which is considered better nowadays that we can emulate them all?

so far Im 7 minutes in and this thing is shaping up to be pretty long, I barely covered 4 things so far
people are no strangers to watching long videos these days, but perhaps getting overly long with just some clips and music might get boring after a while

I dunno, should I just lump everything in one video or maybe break into a two parter?

In any case I need some music suggestions, so far I used the first tracks of Jenesis(the first part), Mutiny and Neogothic movement in that order, I was thinking of a breather for showcasing cool maps with vanilla, all set to Blood On the Walls by Manny Charlton, mostly to avoid a MIDI overload, then back to more gameplay mods and some more MIDI
Im questioning if I should let the whole song in there, maybe it would be wiser to have multiple breaks to pure map showcases instead of just one

Linux is easy, except when it isn't.

Then you gotta figure your computing out, son. You ever see a man compile? One capitalization or spacing error will ruin a 200 character or command entry in the terminal. You want to install the latest update? You better know how to compile. But it's easy, you don't even need an internet browser, you type what you want in the terminal.

Then, you sudo-git all the libraries and then you compile that shit. Like a man. I bet you dream of sucking that dead-ass dick of APPL that cult of personality CEO and that 'status symbol' you get from owning one of their overpriced, underpowered devices or maybe you deep-throat MSFT? weapon attack alignment changes how the weapon sprite aligns when attacking. off is vanilla behavior, where it performs the attack frames from wherever movebob had it placed on the screen, horizontal centers it horizontally but leaves the vertical difference from movebob, centered completely centers the weapon when attacking like in gzdoom, bobbing lets the movebob continue while attacking, and bobbing/2 is the same thing but at half the normal rate

squat weapon down on impact makes the weapon sprite bob downward slightly when landing from a fall, it's fairly subtle compared to the alignment features

neither of these have any real effect on gameplay, bullets and projectiles fire from the center of the screen regardless

Smooth Doom if you want (mostly) classic aesthetics but with lots of extra animation frames.

Nihility : Infinite Teeth (ep2 demo), if you want something that uses original Doom, and Doom Alpha and Beta assets, but just Dehacked and stuff, to make for a very old-school feeling, yet also very fresh experience. Might run in Crispy Doom if it supports DeHacked and BEX stuff.

Hideous Destructor if you like methodical, tactical military shooters but with super deadly demons, quasi-realistic wound management, and really mean arch-viles. This one really isn't for everyone, but what it does do, it does very well.

Playstation Doom: Consolation Prize, if you want to play through the Playstation version of the game, but with mods.

Strife is mostly pretty straightforward, it's only like, the sewer/catacomb levels which are annoying to navigate, too mazelike.
I can't imagine someone finding the entire game confusing.

Like, Strife will give you directives and objectives outright, and narrate them for you, that's far more than Hexen ever did (I don't know about the sequels).
My complaint for Strife is that it does a really good job of charming me and pulling me into the world, but then the game is ultimately too short and leaves me wishing for more. This problem is made worse by the fact that making levels or otherwise making content for Strife is very difficult, because it's a hardcoded mess.

Still, I like it.

Overall poor optimization on maps with large amounts of actors compared to what a port like PrBoom+ can do, and also because of questionable design and decisions on whether it's really targeted for modders or even the end users. The former had very little ZScript documentation to go off which is absolutely stupid for what it is, and the latter had the whole dynamic resolution debacle not too long ago, on top of requests for fairly reasonable features being shut off completely. The entire "we took out the graphics menu, deal with it" and the hostility that came out of them for user feedback really goes to show they don't understand their users and they don't give a shit.

Also Graf loves texture filtering, dark more and other shit, that's why it's the defaults.

True, but they also have vastly different object handling.
There really isn't THAT much you could do to optimize and improve the performance of GZDoom on this point, not without redoing everything from scratch.

I honestly believe Zscript was pushed out too early, both due to the lack of documentation and the severe lack of testing leaving to eight months of releases having a potential system-killing vulnerability that should have never been possible.

It also didn't show great signs of their confidence in 3.0 when they started to threaten developers who stuck with earlier versions of the source port either.

I don't know, I think Lithium was neat for a few reasons, it was a good example of TECHNOLOGY in doom modding, and really the only other mod that showcases that well is Hideous Destructor.

If I was [NO!], I'd actually feel really bad about that.

At least we still have Hideous Destructor, but it's like the After Eight of Doom mods, if you like that sort of thing, it's REALLY good, but there's a lot of people it won't appeal to, just for what it is, so a lot of people don't quite get to appreciate how TECHNOLOGY! it is.

I've been looking through different wads to get an idea on how they added in their custom textures and some like the simpsons doom wad have the same name as doom 2's texture while other ones have custom names.

DECORATE has absolutely nothing to do with textures
https://doomwiki.org/wiki/TEXTURE1_and_TEXTURE2 - vanilla way of adding textures
in zdoom, just make sure they're between TX_START and TX_END markers (or in the textures folder for pk3s)

It's a massive amount of halfassed shit smooshed together in a way that doesn't really run all that well.

Probably does them no favours that they've lost their outside help because fucking drama and went full on NDA mode because somebody leaked a build of theirs.
