Just finished aaliens.wad, what a wonderful ride, the aesthetics, the music, just great.

This is a simple, but also very effective... uh, effect.
Floor is plain as you come down here, then a demonic rune blinks into existance and an Arch-Vile gates into the room straight on it. There's another one on the opposite side of the 'roundel', where the same happens. Later in the map, more monsters gate in through these spots to face you as you come back to this central area.

That and they were heavily fined by Space OSHA for not having enough first-aid kits. So they bought tons of them but were too cheap build cabinets for them, they just stuck them in corners, into inaccessible closets, maintenance crawlspaces, behind facades and wherever to meet some arbitrary first-aid-kit/ square meter floorplan law.

Also, they decided to store ammunition the same way, since storing it in bulk in a single place would mean regulatory issues of having hazardous materials over a certain quantity in one place and having to pay for permits. That's NC-HUD, if you play Suspended In Dusk without modification, it'll just be the regular classic status bar.

I've started to use PRBoom much more than GZ. The other posts have mostly covered it, but for me, it's because demos are extremely easy to deal with, GZ chugs on even classic maps like Scythe MAP26 and MAP30, and I've come to have more respect for vanilla gameplay which GZ changes in ways complevels can't fix like how melee is handled. I also don't really use gameplay mods; I use GZ for QOL stuff like better animations and sounds and stuff.

Update. I mean, I just played through his SameOldShow and Ionized (maps 2 and 3 of the third episode, 'Quest' of Abandon), and there isn't even a competition. What I just played was pretty much "Existentialism: Interactive Edition", a genuine high art (even if incredibly crude looking). It's sublime, inventive, unpredictable, plays natural as fuck once you "get" it (the leitmotif is pretty much "whatever happens, happens") and is just, you know, sensible. I haven't played it in a while, but I suppose it could be a kind of spray-on non-slip texture like OSHA recommends for metal floors and they picked the tasteful beige color to match the rusty metal plate walls. Oh, maybe Earth Control tried to nuke/ superweapon the portal from orbit, too, but since that whole MAP:20 are buildings made from metal plate, it just liquidized everything into lava in a big crater but left the buildings intact.
That beige rubberized floor coating/ outdoor carpet is still some primo shit, though.

"Doomguy, this is Earth Control.... ahead in that crater is the source of the local alien invasion, it was an unfinished underground bunker for CoG. Freelook wouldn't be like originally intended, but using the mouse for horizontal turning is 100% legit, that's how Romero played and recorded the original main menu demos, and tested levels.

That said, if you've beaten Doom and Doom 2 before, the legit way, and you're moving on to Final Doom and megawads, I'm not the kind of person who would hold it against you for turning off auto-aim, putting on a dot crosshair on the screen, and using freelook, mostly because that's THE way to play first person shooters, it just feels right. Final Doom generally feels nicer to play without auto-aim and with freelook, at any rate.

Staying straight, don't use freelook to shoot at shootable switches the map author wouldn't expect you to be able to shoot at until you reach his intended placement, that would be called Breaking Sequence, and you would kind of be robbing yourself of the intended experience that way.
Same for jumping and crouching, if that's something you like, go for it (it can be useful for combat on occasion), but mind that 99% of all levels people make for Doom are not intended for you to jump or crouch, so jumping up on ledges, crawling down through small windows, or clearing a gap you couldn't expect to just run across, would be Breaking Sequence. Use your own judgement I guess.

Really, the game overall is much harder on vanilla rules. Controls barely even have anything to do with it. GZDoom's bugfixes nerf the game into a joke even if you play keyboard only.

All of those things COMBINED cripple his chances by a LOT.
But there's also the fact that making a moveset for Doomguy in a 2D fighting game environment, where each character is expected to moves from their own respective games integrated, would be a fucking nightmare.
All his moves are either guns used in a first-person perspective, glory kills, or a single punch. I couldn't see them knowing what the fuck to do with him. Maybe they could cobble together an assist trophy, but I don't see them pulling off a fully-fledged fighter. There's first-party characters that had fuck-all for moveset potential prior to Smash (Captain Falcon and Fox, for example) but I don't see Nintendo willing to go to such lengths for a third-party, western, super-violent character such as Doomguy.
Furthermore, Snake was only there in Brawl because Kojima wanted him there, and Bayonetta is only there because everyone decided to vote with their dicks instead of their brains, and ended up fucking themselves over with a balancing nightmare in the process.

You can do both, really.
I like using cover a lot, I'm pretty methodical on that, but it's also necessary to just run and gun like a madman.
Run from cover to cover, circlestrafe, kite and dodge projectiles, bonus points for tricking enemies into attacking each other, that's not just funny, it gives you breathing room.
The AI is quite simple minded, take advantage of that.

As said, the original Doom, and Doom 2, are mostly pretty easy. Episode 4 gets pretty rough with you, especially early on, and Doom 2 has a couple of fairly mean traps here and there, but for the most part, they are just not that hardcore, even on UV.
TNT, and especially Plutonia, is where Doom really goes for it in terms of challenge.
If you want more, there's lots of usermade stuff which is good at giving you something hard.

Once you've beaten Doom 2, get back to us.

He just shoots really freaking fast and he has a barely avoidable shockwave attack.

Boom Power is a mod where enemies explode as they die, causing possible chain reactions, which gets counted as combos, this gives you multipliers on score, which is shown with a counter on your screen.

I'm unironically trying to make a shitty blog post, whether i just try to cram in arguements and shit about this subject.
It is louder because of the Switch port, but back then people already thought of it, even if they made it seem weird or come up with weird ideas, that some even though about "Brutal Doom takedowns" or throwing lost souls.
