Was this mod a good idea?

>When finished, this mod will completely remove Cait Sith from the game in favour of a new human character called Iscar Matthias. Iscar is from Judus Iscariot, and Matthias was the apostle chosen to replace him. I have chosen these names to be symbolic of the character's betrayal, and change into a valued ally. Iscar will change and grow as a character. At first he will be a simple Shin-Ra spy, dedicated to his job, but over time, he will come to understand that he is working for the wrong people and change sides.

>Cait Sith is a poorly written character that was probably shoe horned into the story late in development. The character has no logical or believable reason to join your party, or be allowed to join it. The idea that Reeve, a top executive for Shin-Ra, could or would remote control a toy robot cat mounted on top of a stuffed white toy as a tool for espionage, is ridiculous.

>Iscar will change the character model, script, FMV and battle related information. Cait will be utterly annihilated. Where possible I will stick to the original script. The basic plot will remain intact, except that it will be more plausible. I have actually had fanboys trying to rationalise the writing regarding Cait Sith. These people generally display an unbelievably poor understanding of fiction and writing (the usual excuse being "It's just fiction" *roll eyes*).

>Cait's going no matter WHAT you say.

>> No.4988868

Well, let's follow the likely train of thought here. Why does Cait Sith exist? Because it's a JRPG and JRPGs have silly things in them. Did they know Cait Sith made no sense from a practical standpoint? Probably. I guess that was part of the point, right? The comic relief character is the traitor, who knew?

But let's say you don't accept that. Although there's plenty of fantasy elements in FF7 and other silly segments, Cait Sith is probably the one thing that truly can break your suspension of disbelief, both in a visceral sense and logistically.

So, let's take him out. But no, oops, Cait Sith is actually integral to the plot in a few places. So it's either truncate huge parts of the Black Materia storyline, or replace him with something a little more grounded but functionally identical.

Now, why this guy's mind went to "Iscar Matthias" is beyond me. To me, the most elegant solution would just have been to make it a heavily disguised Reeve with a comically altered name, then just do a very minimal rewrite at the end of the Temple of the Ancients maybe.

So no, it wasn't a good idea, but I see how he got there.

>> No.4988875

Cait Sith is great because of that fake out in the temple, where he dies, and a replacement just comes bouncing up, "Hi, I'm Cait Sith 2!"

This, or a literal combat robot with a Shin-Ra logo emblazed on the front. It's seem as part of the Shina-Ra military parade in Junon earlier in the game. The Turks just give it to you at Golden Saucer with an unconvincing argument that it's 'defective' and its's totally not recording everything around it.

Always thought Cait should be able to call a airstrike or artillery as a limit break since presumably everyone would know it was controlled by a double-agent Shina-Ra executive. You'd think he'd have pull to do that.

>The idea that Reeve, a top executive for Shin-Ra, could or would remote control a toy robot cat mounted on top of a stuffed white toy as a tool for espionage, is ridiculous.
Reeve showed signs of having second thoughts waaaaay back when you were in midgar. In fact, Reeve still helps the shinra but at the same time is curious about you. The idea it isn't ridiculous, you see worse shit in FF7 and you are ok with it

And finally, who the fuck told you cait sith is a "comic relief character"? maybe at the beginning when you didn't know he was reeve he acted silly for obvious reasons, but then he was serious enough and an important part of the plot.
In fact Aeris, Barret, Cid and Yuffie were more comic relief than cait sith over the entire game.

>Reeve showed signs of having second thoughts waaaaay back when you were in midgar. In fact, Reeve still helps the shinra but at the same time is curious about you. The idea it isn't ridiculous, you see worse shit in FF7 and you are ok with it

It's not ridiculous in terms of motivations, it's ridiculous in terms of sci-fi/fantasy liberties. Magic and advanced tech are fine, but there has to be some internal consistency. The existence of Cait Sith is basically asking you not to ask questions because you can go down a very stupid rabbit hole if you do.

We had a thread about it a while back. It's established that Cait Sith isn't just "magic," Reeve gives orders to the moogle through the microphone. So why is Shinra able to create such advanced robots, yet it must be controlled through crude voice commands? How precise and complex is this recognition? Why does changing the megaphone increase combat ability? Are the cybernetics so lifelike that the party thought these were benign magical creatures and that there was just no harm in letting it come along? If not, why did they? Why does no one acknowledge it either way? If they're being "Manipulated," why does the magic eventually wear off? Is the cat also a robot, or is it a real magical cat? Why is it necessary to the equation; why does there have to be a middleman from Reeve to moogle? How does Reeve have time to live his actual life and do Cait Sith 24/7, does it have an autopilot? Who created this ridiculously sophisticated setup and why is it not being used for other things?

The answer being that Square just can't write, they could have gotten away with just saying Reeve "controls a moogle/cat with materia!" but no, they had to give answers that just raise more questions. And this is forgiving that >>4988868 >>4989597 would have been infinitely more plausible and charmingly silly.

But other things in FF7 have the pretense of making sense, and therein lies the problem. If I’m meant to write off Cait Sith as a comic aside, then I also choose to reject any part of the story that it’s tied to.

This is the same reason people hated Jar Jar Binks. It’s one thing to make a silly character, but when you make that character necessary to the plot, you’re forcing the audience to validate it.
