Virtua Racing on Genesis is a far more impressive technical achievement compared to Slow Fox.

Heh, epic pwn my fellow hardcore gamer. It truly is amazing how many people on this board have yet to realize that everything Nintendo does, Sega does better. They aren’t the intellectuals like you or I. *chuckles softly*
Why are Nintentoddlers allowed on this board? They're a fucking embarrassment and make real mature gamers like me look bad for even occupying the same board as me.

>b-but Nintendo excelled at making platformers!

Bullshit, Nintendo didn't excel at one god damn thing. I take that back, actually. They excel at one thing. Nintendo excels at being for bing bing wahoo babies and manchildren who run away when they see blood because they are immature babyfags and can't handle a deep, dark, serious game like I can. Sega and Sony had games that reflected the inner darkness of my soul from having two Christmases since my parents were divorced, while Nintendo did kiddy shit because nintentoddlers are fucking babies who never had to rough it in high school like real people, like me, who had to deal with bullies and preppy douchebags since they didn't understand my real power...

agreed, but I'd still pretty much never play the genny version over the 32X version.

Were there other ports? Kind of want to see the arcade original given its full glory.

PS2 had a port on their Sega Ages volumes, I hear it's supposed to be really good but I haven't tried it.
The 32X version is a masterpiece and singlehandedly justifies the existence of that console, IMO. Space Harrier, Afterburner and Virtua Fighter are also great ports on 32X, but VRD is straight up superior to the arcade with smoother controls and new tracks. The only real flaw is the lack of any saving feature, but I guess people just kept their scores on a piece of paper back then.

Same here, it's just too choppy, not as smooth as something like Space Harrier (arcade).

Why didn't they use the chip again? A home port of Virtua fighter on the Genesis would have sold just on the novelty alone. Price? Hard to program?

>> No.4982647

>>4982641
Hard to program most likely, a racing game is a bit easier to do than a game like Virtua Fighter, with constant camera angle changes, a lot of physics calculations and so on.
There was a 2D version of VF anyway.

Price and a patent held by codemasters.

Their plan was to release the chip in a cart like the 32x and S&K, for $50 and release the games for it for $50. So the cart is $50 and Virtua Racing is $50.

Codemasters filed a patent for the same idea first and Sega didn t want to bother with any legal issues.

It's cool on a technical level, but the game doesn't take much advantage of the 3D, it's mostly just used for the scenery. Stunt Race FX, Hard Drivin (another Genesis game) and even Stunt Car Racer on the Spectrum/C64 use polygons to do things that 2D racers couldn't.

Crash effect is pretty dope though

PS2 port would be fucking amazing if it didn't handle so poorly.
VR on 32X is still the best port of VF to this day.

>>4982341
Panorama Cotton does some cool shit, but it looks like a mess in general. It's less playable than say, Space Harrier II, which is a choppy-ass launch game.

>>4982641
32X. The 32X's fundamental design at its core is an SVP on steroids, using the much better SH-2 CPUs and with direct-drawing to the screen instead of passing things through the slow Genesis bus.
The initial pitch was that it'd be cheaper for both consumers (one $150 purchase with normal $50-70 games instead of $100 per game) and would deliver better graphics.

>>4984693
I love KSC. It cheats like fucking hell, but if you're not cheating on the Genesis, you're not fucking playing. Enable Turbo mode in the settings for better framerate -- the FOV is altered so things are a bit smaller, but that's it.
and fuck, the Domark racing games have fairly smooth sprite scaling

>>4982303
The Genesis release is nice. Very nice even.
shame about that framerate, and it's fairly barebones, but it's a good port that controls well

it's just entirely obsoleted by the 32X release

No, its not because that game is like 40% more expensive than starfox. By that logic, every Neo Geo game is more impressive than any other console, so its not important that every game was 200 each.
